OFFERING A SOLUTION TO INDISCIPLINE IN SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

The problem of indiscipline among students in most secondary schools in Nigeria has reached alarming proportions in recent years, especially since the cast decade, and has become a source of great concern not only for teachers and principals, but also for the government and society in general. Such instances of indiscipline occur on a daily basis and are rarely reported in the press or electronic media.

According to the national concord of May 12, 1986, a junior student was nearly killed in Onitsha on July 4th and 7th, 1985. A very shameful incident involving some secondary school students who went out to satisfy their sex urges at the Bar-Beach was also broadcast on Nigeria Television Authority (N.T.A) channel 10, Lagos.

In his article on “indiscipline among students” in the daily sketch on November 19, 1985, Professor Jubril Aminu stated that there is widespread indiscipline in the Nigerian school system. He stated, among other things, that there is an urgent need to ensure that youth develop into disciplined citizens.

This is further supported by Solomon’s profound proverb, “train up a child in the way he should grow, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” The essence of child development psychology is contained in this proverb. Many developmental observers, psychologists, sociologists, and others blame these cases of indiscipline on teachers and parents.

The purpose of this study is to identify the root causes of indiscipline among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, and to propose solutions.

Protests against teachers or school administration are common disciplinary issues among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area, as are stealing, lying, assault, disobedience, fighting, and sexual immorality. For example, students of SSS 2 of (I.C.E) institute of continuous Education demonstrated and a fight broke out between them and Ihogbe, if not for the quick intervention of the board governor and the representative of the Parents Teachers Association.

Massive sums of money are currently being spent in Nigeria on educational programs at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. To transform Nigeria into a developed nation, we need a strong educational program that produces disciplined citizens. Countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan, and China achieved greatness in science, economics, and commerce through discipline and a good education system.

Education thus receives more attention from both the national and state governments, among other priorities.

Unfortunately, in recent years, the school, which is supposed to be a major institution for socialization, has become a training ground for various acts of indiscipline. Who said it? Because there is growing public concern in the country about the rapid decline of our primary, secondary, and tertiary educational institutions, learning cannot take place in a chaotic environment.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The primary goal of this research is to look into the causes of indiscipline in secondary schools in Edo State’s Oredo Local Government Area. The following are the main points of the investigation.

I To what extent are teachers held accountable for acts of indiscipline?

ii) What impact do rigid rules and regulations have on school discipline in Oredo?

iii) Do parents contribute to acts of indiscipline among secondary school students?

iv) Is it necessary for students to participate in their school’s decision-making process before they can obey school rules and regulations?

v) What role does the school administration play in indiscipline among Oredo secondary school students?

vi) Does the media have an impact on secondary school students’ indiscipline?

THE GOAL OF STUDY

Acts of indiscipline among our youth have long been a serious problem, but they have now reached an alarming level, despite all efforts by the federal, state, and local governments to combat this scourge. In light of this, the purpose of this study is to investigate the root causes of indiscipline and propose solutions to them.

The following are the objectives of this study:

– How rigid rules and regulations in Oredo schools affect indiscipline among Oredo secondary schools

– How teachers contribute to acts of indiscipline in secondary schools in Oredo

– How students are involved in school decision-making in Oredo.

– The impact of mass media on school discipline in Oredo.

– The impact of school administration on discipline.

THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

The significance of this study is that its findings would be of tremendous assistance to education students, teachers, principals, parents, governments, and all others concerned with the learning process of students both within and outside Oredo.

For example, if the study’s recommendations are followed, the heavy losses usually suffered by the community and the nation in terms of property and manpower due to student unrest would be minimized, if not completely eliminated.

The old traditional method of school management is being replaced. As a result, the existing combination gap in schools would be bridged. In short, an environment would be created in which students could properly master skills and be members of purposefully active groups.

Teachers who are assigned to secondary schools, either on a temporary or permanent basis, will be familiar with the causes of anti-social behavior in the classroom. The study is also significant in terms of its relevance to the country. If the citizens of any society are disciplined and spend time maintaining law and order, the country will fully benefit from the massive investments she is making to expand their educational programs.

Students benefit as well. According to this study, if the teaching and learning environment is conducive, students are more likely to learn and understand.

QUESTION FOR RESEARCH

For the study, the following research questions have been developed:

– Does peer group influence affect school discipline?

– Does bad home influence contribute to school indiscipline?

– Does bad and autocratic school administration contribute to school indiscipline?

– Does exposure to mass media contribute to school indiscipline?

– Does the behavior of some teachers affect school discipline?
