CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY

Cultism is simply a land of gang behavior that is accepted and valued by the larger society, and it is characterized by oath-taking secrecy and violence. Cultism can also be defined as a phenomenon in which people are united by a shared belief, usually through rituals. According to the Oxford dictionary of current English 5th edition, the word “cult” means a system of religious worship, especially one expressed in rituals.

From this definition, cults now popularly known as confraternity have assumed monstrous features in our institutions of higher learning. As a result, our various campuses, which were once citadels of violence and terrorism, have become citadels of violence and terrorism.

The answer figure has been known to be members of the pirates confraternity during their college or university days. Furthermore, during the violent clashes between the Eiye Confraternity and the Buccaneer, some prominent professors and doctors at the institutions were discovered to be patrons and bankers of these cults.

The implication is that these professors and doctors were once members of these cults in college. We have noticed a disturbing trend in the proliferation of campus cults in our institutions of higher learning. These cults include Vikings, the black axe, the morphine, the buccaneer, the pirates, and the black arrow, to name a few.

Furthermore, the introduction of violent savagery and terrorism into the present day cut a diametrical contrast to what obtained in the past. It is now common in our campuses that factors of ravel cults violent clashes even in broad daylight and fight themselves down with weapons such as guns, and daggers, nocturnal initiation ceremonies in which initiated are animalized and some of them die in the process This is what has prompted the public to speak out against the societal evil, calling for its abolition.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The fundamental problems of cultism are the uncertain and unsafe atmosphere in our campuses, even to the activities of members of secret cults these manner of operation is both sinister and Bizerte living behind them a trial of what destruction most distressing of the problems is the state of killing in our campuses in recent times many lives have been terminated, permanently in spite of measures put in place by various arms of government and school authorities aimed at preventing this.

Thus, the researcher intends to conduct an in-depth investigation into the factors that foster a fearful climate that fosters the growth and spread of cultism in our institutions of higher learning in order to propose solutions to the problems.

1.3 THE OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The goal of this research is to investigate the spread of cultism in our institutions of higher learning in order to educate the public about the scope of the social problem. It should be seen as something that did not happen overnight by those who could do something about it, such as educational planners, educational policymakers, the Nigeria university commission (NUC), the government, parents, various university councils and senate, and so on. It should be as adaptable as its surroundings.

For starters, cult associations parade members who are not typical personality types, so the agoraphobic tract in them fuels the desire to operate and the need to attack. Second, university authorities should not frequently threaten cult members with expulsion; instead, effective means should be devised to draw out and register activities, making them more open and easy to monitor.

Expelling students from a learning institution, particularly for behavioral deficiencies such as exercising one right of association incorrectly, is also psychologically debilitating when a human organism is expelled from an establishment whose sole purpose is to train and change behavior.

1.4 THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

This research will reveal how cultism spread in tertiary institutions, as well as the effects, causes, and solutions. It will also help the government understand and appreciate its areas of strength and weakness in the fight against cultism.

1.5 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCHER

1. Does fear drive people to join cults?

2. Does parental neglect lead to cultism in children?

3. Do threats from peers or the outside world drive people to join cults?

4. Does cultism result in death?

5. Does cultism give people the ability to commit crimes?

 

THE STUDY’S SCOPE IS DETAILED IN 1.6.

This study will include the entire student and staff population of the College of Education in Ekiadolor-Benin.

 

1.7 TERMS AND CONDITIONS DEFINED

Cult: A system of religious worship, particularly one expressed through rituals.

Cultism is the state or phenomenon in which people are united by shared beliefs.

Hitherto means until now or until a specific time.

Quest: The act of seeking or long searching for something.

Empower: To give someone more power or authority to do something or to give them more control over their own life or the situation they are in.

Confraternity: A group of people who come together for religious reasons or to help others.

Rituals: A set of actions that are always carried out in the same way, usually as part of a religious ceremony.

Pirates: People on ships who attack other ships at sea in order to steal their cargo.

Manslaughter is the illegal but unintentional killing of another person.

Maiming: To seriously injure someone, causing bodily harm.
