AN APPRAISAL OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF UNIVERSAL BASIC EDUCATION NIGERIA

Figures and abstract

Despite the existence of a universal basic education program in Nigeria for several years, young children are still roaming the streets begging and hawking during school hours, and school drop-out cases appear to be unresolvable. Based on this premise, the study used a descriptive survey to assess teachers’ perceptions of the implementation of the universal basic education program in the Ogoja Education Zone of Kogi State, Nigeria.

This study was founded on Dewey’s theory of the necessity of life, which states that in order to live a successful life, children must be formally educated on the prevailing realities of their environment. The population of 1800 teachers was studied, with a sample size of 360 teachers. A questionnaire and a checklist were used to collect data.

It was discovered that materials for the implementation of the UBE program are insufficient, and teachers’ perspectives on the supervision of instruction for the implementation of the UBE program differ.

These findings have implications for curriculum implementation in the sense that effective curriculum implementation will be impossible without adequate instructional materials. It is recommended that provision be made for all materials required for the implementation of the UBE program in the Ogoja Education Zone.
