THE NATURE OF PUBLIC SECTOR ACCOUNTING.

ABSTRACT

This research contributes to the requirement for the award of a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy (H.N.D) at the Institute of Management and Technology Enugu.

The topic is the Nature of Public Sector Accounting in the United States (A case study of Enugu North Local Government Accounts).

The study’s goal is to identify areas of importance of local government accounts that are currently being neglected by the treasury departments of various local governments, which will aid in reducing or minimizing the enormous funds that are lost annually due to misappropriation, negligence, and errors of commission. It also aims to assess and identify some of the major barriers impeding efficient financial management in local government.

As a result, this researcher’s work is divided into five chapters, with the first focused on the general introduction and historical backdrop of the topic under consideration. The second chapter examines relevant literature as well as accounting methods and books of accounts.

This covered the sources of the council’s revenue and expenditure, as well as the financial control of local government. The third chapter focuses on the research design and methods, with material for the study analyzed using relevant literature.

The fourth chapter examines data interpretation and the evaluation of important findings. The fifth chapter concentrated on the summary of findings, conclusion, and recommendation. It is envisaged that this study’s contribution will be valuable to students studying finance and treasury departments of various municipal governments.
