ABSTRACT

This study examined the effect of staff attitude on clientele ( Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital, Bauchi ) The entire population for the study consists of 100 staff members and 100 patients from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital in Bauchi. The researcher utilized questionnaires as the data gathering instrument. Using a descriptive survey research design, this study was conducted. The survey utilized a total of 133 respondents, including doctors, nurses, male patients, and female patients. The acquired data were tabulated and evaluated using straightforward percentages and frequencies.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Doctors’ and nurses’ perspectives on patient safety are a crucial impact in hospital safety climates and medical error rates. In professional clinics, hospitals, and other working settings, a bad attitude can impact the treatment of patients by physicians and other healthcare professionals. According to Corrigan et al. and Wahl, the majority of primary care physicians repress negative attitudes. In addition, even productive physicians with mild unfavorable attitudes are capable of engaging in discriminatory behavior. Quantitative survey research on patient safety climate attitudes was conducted in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi, Bauchi state, revealing that doctors and nurses report generally more positive attitudes toward the dimensions of hospital safety climate and teamwork and less positive attitudes toward the dimensions of hospital working conditions and the quality of management support.

The World Health Organization’s Constitution recognizes health as a fundamental human right, stating that the enjoyment of the best possible quality of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being regardless of race, religion, political belief, economic or social position. Patients’ satisfaction with the provided services is one of the primary goals of medical care, which can have a considerable impact on their health status. Denial of a patient’s right causes significant stress for patients and their families, and may harm the health system’s social standing.

Caring is essential to nursing (Gray, 2008:169). Finfgeld-Connett (2008) defines caregiving as an interpersonal process characterized by skilled nursing, interpersonal sensitivity, and close relationships. Caregiving encompasses both technical or medical and emotional components. Brilowski & Wendler (2005:642) recognise emotional and technical components of care and mention attitudes, behaviors, relationships, acceptance, and diversity as caring characteristics. In contrast to caring is indifference. Wiman & Wikblad (2004:427) define indifferent characteristics as being uninterested, insensitive, cold, and inhuman. High quality care requires doing the right thing at the right time and enhancing health outcomes for patients, families, and communities (Uys & Naidoo, 2004). However, this is not always the case. Some study found that patients were dissatisfied with the quality of treatment they received (Uys & Naidoo, 2004) and with nurses who lacked compassion (Wiman & Wikblad, 2004:428). Other researchers discovered inadequate care for specialized conditions, such as HIV (Van Dyk, 2007:50) and Hepatitis C (Frazer et al., 2010:597), which was associated with unprofessional health worker attitudes. Positive attitudes towards patients and patient care are required of nurses. Attitudes are “hypothetical latent features deduced from external observable signals” (Ajzen, 2005:23). The attitudes of health professionals influence behavior, quality of care, and health outcomes (Dias et al., 2012). Negative attitudes have an impact on the care of elderly patients (Jacelon, 2002:232) and other vulnerable patients, such as those with Hepatitis C. (Frazer et al., 2010). This study investigated the relationship between staff attitude and patronage in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi, Bauchi state.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This hospital received complaints regarding worker attitudes and subpar nursing care standards. It was necessary to investigate the attitudes of nurses so that initiatives might be developed to enhance the quality of treatment and solve challenges encountered by patients.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The study’s aims are as follows:

To investigate the attitude of healthcare employees at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital in Bauchi, Bauchi state.
Determine the attitudes and behaviors of nurses regarding patient care from the nurses’ point of view.
To determine the attitudes and behaviors of nurses toward patient care as perceived by patients.
Determine the elements that influence the staff’s attitude toward patient care at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital in Bauchi, Bauchi state.
RESEARCH QUESTION
Exist attitudes among the personnel at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital in Bauchi, Bauchi state?
From the nurses’ perspective, do attitudes and behaviors of nurses toward patient care exist?
Exist attitudes and behaviors of nurses about patient care from the standpoint of patients?
What variables influence the staff’s attitude toward patient care at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital in Bauchi, Bauchi state?
RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
The researcher formulated the following research hypotheses for the successful completion of the study:

H0: the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital in Bauchi, Bauchi state, has no staff attitude.

H1: the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital in Bauchi, Bauchi state, has a staff attitude.

There are no elements that influence the staff’s attitude toward patient care at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital in Bauchi, Bauchi state.

There are elements that influence the attitude of the employees of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital in Bauchi, Bauchi state, toward patient care.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY
The study will be of great importance to students, the health ministry, and the general public. The research will provide light on the effect of employee attitude on patronage. The study will provide a remedy for the negative attitude of healthcare professionals toward patients. The work will also act as a resource for future researchers interested in this area.

SCOPE AND BOUNDS OF THE STUDY
The focus of this study is the effect of staff attitude on clientele. The scope of the investigation will be limited to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa hospital in Bauchi, Bauchi state. The researcher faces a constraint that restricts the study’s scope;

a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The researcher has insufficient research material, consequently limiting the scope of the investigation.
b) TIME: The time allotted for the study does not allow for a broader scope because the researcher must mix it with other academic activities and examinations.
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

ATTITUDE: A consistent manner of thinking or feeling about a subject.

Patronage is the support, encouragement, privilege, or financial assistance bestowed upon another by an institution or individual.

Community health workers (CHW) are members of a community who are selected by community members or organizations to provide basic health and medical care to their community, as well as preventative, promotional, and rehabilitative care.

1.8 STRUCTURE OF THE STUDY

This study project is divided into five chapters for simple comprehension:

The introduction comprises the (overview, of the study), historical context, description of the problem, aims of the investigation, research hypotheses, research question, relevance of the study, scope and limitations of the study, definition of terminology, and historical context of the study. The second chapter focuses on the theoretical framework upon which the investigation is based, therefore the literature review. The third chapter discusses the study’s research strategy and methodology. Chapter four focuses on data collection, analysis, and findings presentation. The study’s summary, conclusion, and suggestions are presented in Chapter 5.
