THE EFFECT OF ANTIBODY TESTING ON THE SPREAD OF CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19) IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome – Novel Coronavirus 2 (SARS-nCoV-2) was first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Since the outbreak, the virus has infected over 9,866,685 people, treated and discharged 4,983,029 people, and killed 495,692 people worldwide.

The first case of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Nigeria was imported in February 2020, and community transmission has been widespread since then. At the time of writing, Nigeria had reported 23,298 cases of COVID-19, 8,253 treated and discharged, and 554 deaths, for a case mortality ratio of 2.4 percent.

While responsible government agencies and international partners have been working hard to contain the disease’s spread, we present in this report some issues that have arisen from managing the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria, as well as suggestions that could help not only in managing the current COVID-19 pandemic, but also in winning future outbreaks of public health significance with the goal of reducing global health security.

Introduction

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome – Novel Coronavirus 2 (SARS-nCoV-2) was first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan, China [1]. Coronavirus Disease-19 was renamed by the World Health Organization (WHO) (COVID-19). The pandemic has posed significant threats to food security, socioeconomic stability, public health, and vulnerable health systems, particularly in developing countries [1].

As of the time of writing, the virus had infected over 9,866,685 people, treated and discharged 4,983,029 people, and killed 495,692 people worldwide. Health systems, human resources, and the supply chain have all been stretched, making outbreak management difficult [1].

Locally, there were 23,298 COVID-19 cases in Nigeria at the time of writing this report, with 8,253 treated and discharged and 554 deaths [2]. While the disease has spread to 35 of the Federation’s states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), major economic and capital cities such as Lagos, FCT, Rivers, and Kano have the highest disease burden (Figure 1).

Figure 2 depicts the prevalence of COVID-19 in the country’s various geopolitical zones. The South West region has the highest COVID-19 burden, with Lagos accounting for more than 80% of the total disease burden. Lagos is the country’s commercial capital and economic hub, and given the city’s high level of economic activity, community transmission of the disease is likely. This could explain the increase in COVID-19 cases reported in the city.
