PROBLEMS OF EDUCATING AND TRAINING OF LIBRARY AND INFOR SCIENCES STUDENT
ABSTRACT
The psychological study of the challenges in the training and education of library and information science students. Against this backdrop, the researcher considers the subject matter worthy of investigation in order to examine how the challenges pose a threat to the effective training of library and information science students.
INTRODUCTION TO CHAPTER ONE
1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND
Training and education in library and information science (LIS) play an important role in producing high-quality LIS students who hold a unique position in national development. LIS students act as information gatekeepers and brokers, which is critical for knowledge acquisition, decision-making, and national development. The success of libraries, archives, and information centers in meeting their obligation to provide information is dependent, in part, on the development of skilled labor.
According to Korsah (1996), trained personnel are a critical requirement in library and information work. In this regard, LIS education is critical (Edegbo, 2011). Although early LIS students, particularly librarians, received no formal training (Wikipedia, nd.), the modern challenges of library and information work necessitate that personnel be well-trained and educated in order to be effective.
Melvin Dewey, the famous proponent of the Dewey Decimal Classification System, is credited with founding the first library school in the United States at Columbia University in 1887. (Wikipedia, n.d.). In Europe, the Library School founded in Barcelona in 1915 is regarded as the continent’s oldest library school. Several other library schools were said to have been established during WWII. In Africa, however, South Africa is credited with the continent’s longest history of LIS, dating back to 1938. (Ocholla, 2007).
In West Africa, the earliest formal training in librarianship consisted of short courses organized by practicing librarians and aimed solely at preparing participants for the British Library Association examinations, which were then the only gateway for aspiring librarians (Ojo-Igbinoba, 1995). (Aguolu and Aguolu, 2002).
One such course was held in 1944 at Achimota College in Gold Coast (now Ghana) and drew participants from various West African countries, including Nigeria. This appears to be the earliest evidence of Ghana and Nigeria’s strong historical connection in the education and training of LIS students. As a result, the focus of this research is on the challenges associated with the training and education of library and information science students.
1.2 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

1. To learn about the difficulties that library and information science students face?
2. To ascertain the attitude of LIS students toward training. 3. To ascertain the general public’s perception of the profession.
4. To identify issues that are impeding effective library and information science education and training for students.

1.5 THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE
A review of the literature reveals that efforts have been made in the past to train and educate library and information science students; thus, this research is an improvement on previous ones because it focuses on the challenges in training and educating library and information science students.
This study, on the other hand, will be extremely useful to undergraduate students, librarians, and researchers conducting research on challenges in training and education of library and information science students.
1.6 THE STUIDY’S SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
The project addresses the challenges of training and education of library and information science students by using the Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa department of library and information science as a comparative study.
