INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Basic hygiene is the maintenance of health and the prevention of disease transmission. It includes frequent body bathing, hand washing when necessary, nail clipping, clothes washing, maintaining neat hair, and tooth brushing. Schoolchildren are especially susceptible to neglecting fundamental personal hygiene (Enahoro and Orokj, 1986).

Moreover, their morbidity and death outcomes are more severe than those of adults. In developing nations, the rising prevalence of communicable diseases among schoolchildren due to poor personal hygiene habits and inadequate sanitary environments remains a top public health priority.

Poor understanding, practice, and attitudes regarding personal cleanliness contribute significantly to the high frequency of communicable diseases, which has detrimental long-term effects on the child’s overall development.

Due to their frequent indirect contact with the mouth, nose, and genitalia, the hands are likely the most important vector for infection transmission in the household and community (Urwhttp://www.ifh-hollehygiene.org).

They also came into contact with consumable food and water. Inadequate hand hygiene has been shown to be a powerful and constant source of gastrointestinal illnesses (WHO, 2002); some respiratory diseases have also been connected to poor personal hygiene habits.

In schools where communicable diseases have been recorded, good hand washing and other sanitary behaviors promoted via health education have been credited with preventing the spread of these illnesses (Long-Shan, 2000). Understanding the degree of fundamental personal hygiene knowledge and practices among schoolchildren in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Globally, the high mortality and morbidity rates attributable to communicable diseases among school-aged children have been linked to their poor personal hygiene. Adults must instruct and guide children in order for them to adopt specific health and wellness-related behaviors.

To effectively address the problem of communicable disease among school-aged children, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders must devise strategies to teach and encourage children to practice proper hygiene.

Nonetheless, it has been noticed that little or nothing has been done to teach these habits among schoolchildren, resulting in an increase in the rate of contact/spread of certain infectious diseases and a worsening of mortality rates associated with these diseases.

Therefore, if proper safeguards are taken, communicable disease among schoolchildren can be kept to an absolute minimum.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

This study aims to evaluate the association between inadequate hygiene practices and communicable diseases among schoolchildren in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Do the students understand fundamental personal hygiene?
Exist good hygiene procedures among students?
Are there measures in place to assist children in maintaining excellent hygiene?

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

It is anticipated that this work would motivate school authorities and various parents-teachers associations to collaborate in order to identify critical health needs among school-aged children and implement relevant health interventions. It is also expected to increase classroom teachers’ knowledge of basic hygienic practices and the necessity for them to guarantee that children adhere to these practices.

SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH

This study will focus on a sample of primary schools in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
