My Self Isolation Dairy: Let’s Talk About COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

At the start of 2020, it’s fair enough to say no one knew anything about the coronavirus. And when reports of a new coronavirus came out of China on January 10th. The world still didn’t take notice.

We were yet to understand what was going on. But as the number of infected persons grew in China. The Chinese government developed strategies to fight back the infection.

This included isolation of corona confirmed patients and those they have had close contact with. They lockdown cities, enforced mass quarantine zones, and social distancing.

The world watched from a “safe” distance, well at least that’s what we thought. Today, China hasn’t recorded any new cases of the Coronavirus in 3 Days, while Globally there were 58,285 New Cases on March 29th, 2020 and 66,761 New Cases on March 28th, 2020. It’s fair to say it’s been a rough weekend.

The World is in isolation and practicing social distancing.

Social media is flooded with trends and hashtags of ‘stay home’, ‘self-isolation’ and ‘social distancing’. The streets are empty; mostly empty, because people will always be people.

As for me, it’s been 7 days and well, it’s been 7 days. Let me tell you what I’ve been through, I hope this helps you cope with Isolation and I’ll see you again in a week.

Day 1

On the first day of isolation, I didn’t think this whole thing through. I just felt it wouldn’t take more than 3 days and I would be back to my normal life.

Firstly, I went to the mall, I was like just a little lite shopping and basic restocking would do.

I shopped for food that would last for 2weeks.

For the rest of the day, I stayed on my phone, calling and texting my friends and family. Twitter was just going crazy with hashtags about Coronavirus. Videos and memes kept me entertained the whole day.

Day 2

I started my day quite early. I thought I should take advantage of this “stay home, self-isolation” buzz and do something different with my time, maybe take on some new hobbies or rekindle my love for the old ones, who knows…

I began my day with a 30mins intense workout session, which was quite painful; I must confess.

Next off, I had a meal and started looking up cookbooks on the internet. Decided I wanted to learn how to make a few non-local dishes. A few minutes in, I fell asleep. I woke up after a few hours and found myself munching on some baked potatoes and soda.

Well, let’s just say day 2 continues with a series of sleep and food.

Day 3

I began my day with a workout the same as the previous day but this time, less intense because I was still battling with terrible pains in my joints as a result of the work out from yesterday.

I was feeling excited about today because I had plans of making a frittata. A dish I had seen in the cookbooks from yesterday. Finally made it and it didn’t taste as good as I thought it would.

A little more salt and garlic would have made it perfect. Few hours into the day, I got a call from my boss. He needed my help with some work which I did from my computer at home.

The day ends with me exhausted from working half the day and I just needed to get some sleep.

Day 4

Woke up excited with the thought in my head “isolation is over, I can now go outside and play”.

Well, it was really sad that my thought was not even a mile close to my reality.

Everyone was still isolating.

No cure or vaccine had been found.

I went sad instantly and almost fell into depression. Since I didn’t make any plans for because I thought I would finally be out of isolation and go about my normal activities, I was bored the whole day and only got busy when I had to eat.

Day 5

By day 5, my mother had decided to flood my phone with calls about every piece of new on coronavirus.

She would ask if I had anything to eat already if I had a fever or a cough. Sometimes it was depressing but this day, I needed as much company as I could get.

So, I made the call last longer than it normally would. I even suggested we made a video call. I just didn’t want to be all by myself, sleeping and eating all day.

The call ended after about 3hrs and I was bored again. In a bid to occupy myself, I logged onto almost every social media platform that I existed on; Instagram,

Twitter, WhatsApp you name it…to occupy myself before I go crazy. To be honest, there wasn’t much to see there. Everyone was talking about Corona.

The word count of admitted patients had skyrocketed. The whole thing was becoming scary and I was sinking more into untamed sadness. A few hours later, I was on Netflix looking for a series to keep my mind busy. I hadn’t had time for a series lately because of work but thanks to “Corona” can’t say that right now.

I finally picked a movie, Money Heist. I have been willing to see it for a while, so I said to myself, why not take advantage of this free time. I watched Money Heist the whole day while I ate Pringles, popcorn and drank juice.

Day 6

I took the work out to another level because I had been eating so much for the last 5 days since I am always home. I continued watching money heist, surfing the internet and eating the whole day. By the end of the day, I was almost done with season 2 of money heist.

Day 7

It’s the 7th day already and it doesn’t seem like this isolation/lockdown is going to end anytime soon. I predict it’s going to be on for another 2 weeks. Well except some marginal cure comes up.

I am not going to lie. I am going crazy. I never appreciated my fundamental human right of freedom of movement until this day. Can I just go to the beach at least? It is suffocating in here.

I should have been isolated with a friend, anybody at all, it’s better than staying home all by myself.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably in isolation too and would agree with me that it is sickening. But as sickening as it is, it holds promises in preventing the spread of the coronavirus. The COVID-19 virus is spreading rapidly and containing it is not as realistic as we thought, seeing that it has spread through a lot of countries.

The best thing we all can do at this time is to practice social distancing and self-isolation. This would help to slow the spread of the outbreak. The more people that isolate, the more effective it will be. You must take this seriously and encourage your family and friends to do the same.

To make this period of isolation more interesting, you should isolate with a friend or family member that has not been in direct or indirect contact with a confirmed case of Coronavirus.

Learn new things, you can decide to take an online course in any course or language you wish to learn, make paintings, drawings, read a book or maybe write one. Anything to keep your mind busy and prevent you from falling into depression.

Again, you must get updates about the virus from trusted sources. This would prevent you from getting unnecessary panics.

Finally, if you have any symptom associated with those of the virus be sure to call the helplines and get medical help as soon as possible.

Remember, Self-isolation is critical, and everyone should engage in it.
