ABSTRACT

This empirical study investigated the effect of training and development on worker productivity at the Nestle Agbara facility in Ogun state. The goal of this study is to analyze the effect of training on Nestle’s agbara factory’s productivity, as well as to propose solutions to such issues. This study’s aims were to assess the effects of training and development on personnel at the Nestle Agbara plant in Ogun state, as well as the influence of trained manpower on productivity at the Nestle Agbara factory in Ogun state. The focus of this study is the Nestle agbara factory in 2019 utilizing senior and junior staff personnel; system theory was used as a theoretical framework. The research design employed is a survey, and the population for this study comprises of all 2,201 employees at the Nestle agbara factory. 338 employees were selected as the sample size, and cluster sampling was utilized. The questionnaire was utilized as a data gathering instrument. The information was gathered from primary sources. The data analysis reveals that manpower development programmes have an effect on Nestle Nigeria PLC’s manpower, and that trained manpower has an effect on Nestle Nigeria PLC’s productivity. Following the findings, it was advised that Nestle Nigeria PLC’s management implement an effective training and development program. The purpose of training is to provide employees with the skills and procedures required for a certain role within a company; hence, workers should be adequately trained for the appropriate position. This will considerably enhance the company’s efficiency and effectiveness and assure full capacity utilization. The conclusion of the study is that workers can only perform effectively if they receive the necessary training and equipment.

INTRODUCTION

 

1.1. Context of the Study

Manpower is the sum of all available employees inside an organization. It is impossible to overstate the significance of human capital to the long-term viability of any firm or enterprise. Manpower is the foundation of all resources and the indispensable means of converting other resources to mankind’s use and benefit; therefore, how well we develop and employ human resources skills is fundamental in determining how much will be accomplished by an organization or a nation as a whole; manpower development and utilization is of utmost importance to any sector, as it deals with how to keep employees satisfied, up-to-date, resourceful, and veracious. Given the nature of human existence in modern times, the preceding is of crucial importance (Ajieh, 2014).

Manpower development is the process of achieving intellectual and emotional growth by giving the means for people to advance in their careers. According to Saraswathi (2010), manpower development in the organizational context is a process by which the employees of an organization are assisted in a continuous, planned manner to acquire or sharpen capabilities required to perform various functions associated with their present or expected future roles; develop their general capabilities as individuals and discover and exploit their own inner potentials for their own and/or organizational development processes; and develop an understanding of the organization’s mission, goals, and objectives.

In this advanced age of progress and technical advancement, there is no doubt that human capital must be created to meet the difficulties of modern technology. In order for the Nestle Agbara facility in Ogun state to be efficient and effective, well-trained and developed personnel are required. In recent years workforce training and development has been the backbone of many organization. Adebayo (2016) defines training as the activities undertaken by a business to equip its employees with the essential skills and knowledge to properly carry out their responsibilities.

According to Ojohwoh (2011), manpower is indispensable in any institution, whether industrial, commercial, or educational. According to Onah (2014), what differentiates the most successful organizations is their human resource management.

Nestle Agbara factory is not an exception to the reality that many firms in Nigeria are poor in their operations and overall effectiveness due to the type or caliber of their workforces. Nestle Agbara plant is a publicly traded firm specializing in food and beverages. To accomplish its role efficiently, it requires highly qualified, developed, professional, energetic personnel and innovative technology.

 

1.2 Description of the Research Problem

The human resources (manpower) are regarded as the most essential to the survival of any company, despite the fact that an appropriate quantity of material and financial resources is required to achieve the intended goals. This is indeed the case at the Nestle factory in Agbara, Nigeria.

The majority of organizations precisely plan their investments in physical and capital resources, whereas the few that do so do so in a careless manner. Consequently, there has been a gradual decline in manpower’s ability to cope.

In the Nestle facility in Agbara, the capacity to attain and maintain a competitive edge is contingent on the availability of trained laborers. The prosperity of the organization depends on their performance. In this context, the researcher investigated the impact of training and development on Nestle Agbara factory workers’ productivity in Ogun state.

 

1.3. Aims of the research

This study aimed to determine the effect of training and development on Nestle Agbara factory workers’ productivity in Ogun state. The particular aims are to:

Consider the impact of training and development on Nestle Agbara’s workforce in Ogun state.
Examine the influence of trained labor on Nestle Agbara’s production in Ogun state.

1.4. Research Concerns

The following research questions will serve as the basis for this study:

What effect does training and development have on the workforce at the Nestle Agbara facility in Ogun state?
What effect does trained labor force have on Nestle Agbara’s production in Ogun state?

1.5. Importance of the Research

Given is the importance of human capital to the success or expansion of any firm. This is because poorly trained employees are entirely ineffective in achieving organizational objectives. This pertains to the manufacturing industry in general and the Nestle Agbara factory in particular. As a result of their inability and lack of confidence to fulfill their jobs, which hinders production, it is vital to provide staff with proper training.

This study is conducted empirically to determine the training and development needs of the Nestle Agbara factory’s workforce in Ogun state, so as to alleviate the company’s poor productivity problem.

This study will be significant to the Nestle Agbara facility since it will assist guide its management on how to operate and treat its employees. It will teach them the significance of personnel and how to acquire it effectively. It will also assist the management in maximizing the value of their personnel by introducing training programs at all levels of the workforce, and enable them to plan and implement more effective manpower development and utilization training programs for their staff.

This study will be of the utmost relevance to investors, the government, and researchers since it will provide policy suggestions to the many Nigerian stakeholders for rapid capacity investment in the manufacturing industry. It is envisaged that the examination of the Nestle Agbara factory would offer investors and government with a comprehensive understanding of the operations of the food and beverage industry. The changing nature of the business has influenced the sector in recent years and will necessitate the collection of new evidence for research on personnel in the industry (s). It will contribute to the current research on the topic by studying empirically the function that labor plays in the nation’s manufacturing industry. This research will be useful to;

Academia: Academia members will find the study relevant because it will serve as a basis for future research and a reference tool for academic publications.

This study will inform the government on developments in the manufacturing industry. The growth of the industry might be ensured by formulating and implementing policies based on these findings.

This study will also be useful for investors, particularly those with a research interest, as it will inform their private investment decisions.

This study’s conclusion will enlighten the company’s management on the significance of workforce training and development.

 

1.6. Range of the Research

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of training and development on worker productivity in the Nestle Agbara factory in Ogun state in 2019 employing senior and junior staff workers. The location of Nestle Nigeria PLC is kilometer 32, Lagos-Badagry express road, Agbara industrial area, Ogun state.

 

1.7. Definition of Terms for Operations

The following terms have been operationally defined.

Manpower is the sum total of all available workers; the labor force. This indicated the total number of Nestle Nigeria PLC pensionable employees.
Training is the process of teaching a person a specific skill or behavior. It is a type of activity that is planned, methodical, and resulting in an increase in the degree of ability, knowledge, and competence required to execute work efficiently. It includes the many training programs completed at Nestle Nigeria PLC.
Development is the process of becoming developed or of developing. It is an event marking a new phase in a situation that is evolving.
Human resource management is the process through which organizations manage their employees and help them grow in order to achieve their missions and goals. It pertains to how Nestle Nigeria PLC handles its personnel.
Training and development: refers to an organization’s continual efforts to enhance the performance and self-actualization of its personnel through a variety of educational approaches and initiatives.
Organization: an entity composed of numerous individuals, such as an institution or an association with a specific mission.

1.8 Structure of the Study

This study consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which includes the study’s context, problem statement, research questions, research hypotheses, aims, importance, scope, and constraints, as well as the study’s structure. The second chapter examines the literature review, which includes conceptual literature, theoretical literature, empirical literature, and a theoretical framework. The third chapter describes the research methodology, including research design, population of study, sample size, sampling strategy, method of data collecting, instrument of data analysis, method of data analysis, and instrument validity/reliability. The fourth chapter contains the presentation and analysis of data, as well as a discussion of the findings. The fifth chapter contains a summary, conclusion, and recommendations.
