CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background of the study

Globally, organizations are categorized as high, medium, or low flyers depending on how they engage with their operating environment in terms of social duties, task and service delivery, and employee and customer satisfaction. An organization’s mission is to generate profits via the production of products and services. To accomplish the intended outcomes, the company needs employ employees who are both competent and committed to the work at hand. Committed personnel are commended for their efforts, and corporations applaud them in order to achieve their goods and aims. According to this theory, there will be no organizations if there is no communication. Management’s communication skills impact whether a business achieves its goals, performs its social responsibilities, or both. If managers communicate effectively, the company is more likely to accomplish its goals. According to Pillay K. and Hoque N. (2015), communication is the process of meaningful human interaction. Communication is the transmission of information and the exchange of meanings in order to attain understanding. Communication requires the presence of a sender, a message, a channel, and a receiver. Even if the recipient is unaware or uninvolved in the sender’s communication goal at the time of communication, it is preferred for communicating parties to have a communicative common ground. As a consequence, communication may span vast amounts of time and distance. According to Daramola (1997), communication is pervasive. It happens everywhere, everywhere, and at all times. It is there wherever we look. Today, there is increasing concern, debate, research, and misunderstanding about how managers execute their roles – management performance – and organizational performance – the measure of how successfully organizations carry out their responsibilities. Therefore, effective communication is essential for the continuing existence of any business. Good communication is required for the effective coordination of its resources (human and non-human) into desirable and efficient working units. A lack of information will surely lead to chaos, and organizational objectives regarding worker productivity will become unattainable owing to a lack of communication, since effective staff utilization is based on effective communication systems. Communication may increase workers’ productivity, which is defined as the degree to which an organization’s resources are brought together and utilised to produce a set of outcomes (Taylor N. 2015).

Effective communication facilitates the accomplishment of corporate objectives. Efficacy, mutual understanding, and productivity are all enhanced by good communication. In the workplace, communication may go in both ways, from management to workers and vice versa. The most typical sorts of information that flow from management to workers are structurers, queries or questions, and the submission of forms for decision-making. While information going from subordinates to management takes the form of, among other things, protests, suggestions, information supply, and complaints.

There are a variety of oral and textual communication strategies used in the workplace of any organization. No of the method used, it must result in mutual understanding amongst the parties concerned. The extent of this comprehension is dependent on the message’s clarity and the recipient’s ability to discern intended meanings. Office communication strategies are determined by the nature of the message and the identity of the sender. Because messages, media, individuals, and message receivers vary, it is necessary to apply the appropriate medium. Considerations include speed and accuracy, the nature of the communication, the message’s recipient and sender, the appropriate medium, etc. (Lukaszewski, J. 2006). The following is an explanation of communication’s purpose: i. Establish and communicate the enterprise’s objectives. ii. To create plans for achieving them iii. To manage people and other resources with maximum efficiency and effectiveness. iv. To monitor performance so as to remain on track with predetermined goals and objectives. According to Amiayo (2005), a lack of information would eventually lead to chaos and the failure to achieve organizational objectives. The importance of individual communication in any firm cannot be emphasized.

1.2       Statement of the problem

Despite the undeniable importance of communication to the effective and efficient administration of any organization, managers and chief executives have found it to be challenging and stressful owing to a number of obstacles. Communication overload, poorly expressed messages, inappropriate medium, poor listening and premature evaluation, grapevine, hostility between participants, bureaucracy, social distance, communication filtering, and personal and family issues as sources of distraction are all examples of communication barriers.

There is also a mismatch between the role of communication and the attainment of organizational objectives due to misunderstanding. According to Himelstein A.(2015), the rising knowledge of the importance of communication has prompted a great deal of research in corporate communication, which has proven that effective communication among workers improves a great deal of what is seen as essential in firms. The fact is that in companies, excellent communication is not permitted to flow freely. The attitude of management and employees negatively affects labor productivity. Numerous communication systems have been implemented in workplaces that have nothing to do with productivity because the proper system is not used at the proper time by the proper individual. Consequently, the objective of this research is to assess the impact of organizational communication techniques on staff productivity in Delta State.

However, the research is restricted to two chosen private firms in Asaba, Delta State.

1.7       Limitation of the study

As with any human endeavor, the researchers experienced minor obstacles in conducting the study. Due to the paucity of literature on the topic and the absence of a recent study on communication method in organizational efficiency, the researcher had to incur greater financial costs and invest more time in locating the relevant materials, literature, or information, as well as in the process of data collection; as a result, the sample size was restricted. In addition, the researcher will conduct this investigation alongside other scholarly endeavors. However, despite the limitation, the researcher minimized all of them while assuring that the best is provided.

1.8       Definition of terms
