CHAPTER ONE

1.1. BACKGROUND OF THE

 

Everyone aspires to a long and healthy life. An individual’s capacity to lead a healthy lifestyle is critical to achieving excellent health.
As human requirements cannot be totally met at any particular time, good health is difficult to achieve. Even if one is in good physical health, it is possible that one is not in good social, , or other health. One’s lifestyle has a direct impact on one’s health, and how we deal with stress is one of the most common silent killers. We also have a lot to do with our health through how we exercise, eat, drink (alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes), and have sex, among other things.

In order to fully comprehend the implications for the lives of people, groups, and communities, it is necessary to provide factual facts.
’s perceptions are shaped by the information they get, so it is important to get the word out so that everyone may benefit.

The delivery of information to customers and patients should be thoughtful and tailored to their specific needs. In order to have an effective communication strategy, a wide variety of communication tools must be utilized. Behavioural change can only occur if the strategy or strategies used are well-executed. ’s health issues can be better understood and incorporated into their daily routines if proper communication methods are used.

Adopting healthful habits and avoiding unhealthy ones are essential if you want to live a long and healthy life. Healthy lifestyles are promoted by health education, which teaches people how to avoid sickness, lessen disability, and improve their overall health.

It is important to personalize health education to the specific communication and methods that produce an external sense for the audience. “Rising health achievement is attained through disseminating health information that influences individuals’ health choices,” noted Beato, Richrdo, and Jana [2013]. Community-based health information is essential for promoting, maintaining, and restoring health. Communication is critical to promoting and sustaining healthy behavior. The medium of health communication is used to raise awareness of health-related issues among individuals and communities.

The goal of health promotion is to assist individuals, groups, and communities in identifying their health needs, locating relevant resources, and enlisting their help in bringing about positive change.
In contrast, the World Health Organization (WHO) des “health promotion” as “the process of empowering people to strengthen their control over and to improve their health.”

An individual’s ability to change their behavior can be a challenge. Because of this, factual data should be presented in a way that encourages people to alter their behavior. A healthy lifestyle is one that includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, appropriate sexual practices, avoiding the use of alcohol, drugs or cigarettes, and regular medical checkups, among other things (well-being). Because of a lack of education, “it is written that my people must perish.” Is it true that many Nigerians are unaware of the most recent health news?

This is a really important issue! Many people are dying as a result of a lack of information and communication, which is causing poverty. There is a high incidence of sickness and mortality, physical and lethargy, the inability to work hard on a daily basis, illiteracy, poverty and the lack of social amenities and infrastructures in rural areas according to Onabajo [2011].”

Aside from the isolation from ideas, information, and services that rural communities face in terms of disease prevention and total eradication because 70% of people live in rural areas, illiteracy, and poverty are prevalent in rural areas (Mabogunju, 1981). The majority of the population lives in rural areas, where transportation of people and goods is sluggish and difficult, making it difficult to get to health centers, marketplaces, and other community and cultural hubs.

Rural communities are often the first to benefit from important services and improvements, such as education and health care. The majority of the population lives in the countryside, thus it will take a long time for measures to be implemented there. Radio and television programs that focus on rural issues are a surefire way to get the word out about rural issues and spur economic development in rural areas.

A common argument used by proponents of rural development initiatives is that “more practical information” is needed to help rural residents enhance their land’s productivity, improve their food, and lower disease rates by implementing healthier habits at home.

Onabajo [2011] also confirmed that “because the broadcast media can reach isolated communities swiest and at a comparatively lower rate, emphasis has been on its use in disseminating information messages from capital cities to the periphery in one-way communication flow without a recourse to the necessary feedback”

This necessitates the use of rural broadcasting tactics to bring about desirable ideas, information, and services, as well as to bridge the communication gap between rural and urban areas. It’s time to put radio at the forefront of our efforts to change people’s attitudes regarding the environment and their own health. Radio is the sole form of mass communication that reaches the biggest potential audience in developing countries, allowing for effective grassroots mobilization and a better awareness of events.

As a rural development agent, the Radio is a popular choice because of its capacity to reach people even in the most remote corners of the country. The ideal instruments may be television and the internet, however most African countries, particularly Nigeria, suffer from electricity epilepsy, lack of Internet connectivity, and a remote location. The best way to mobilize people is through radio, which is the most effective.

‘Radio can reach the farthest reaches of a country with educational, social, economic, political, and cultural programs that invigorate the regular process of living,’ Aspinal [1971] wrote. In developing countries, radio can be used to promote and support the causes of nation-building. As a result, grassroots mobilization can be aided by using five radio strategies: open broadcasting, radio study groups, radio rural forums, radio schools, and radio and animation.

1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM:

Many international funders and government agencies work together with the Nigerian government and other organizations to support its public health communication efforts in Africa’s largest country. Almost all areas of public health practice, including family planning, HIV/DS, and others, have seen significant improvements as a result of such programs.

As a result of this study, it has been discovered that the majority of Nigerians live in rural regions and still believe in traditional health practices. Using critical analysis, it is recommended that public health practices must always be engaging, provide clear and compelling information, and solicit feedback. Mass media is often believed to be the most effective strategy.

An important conclusion of this article is that family planning and health communication programs should use a cost-sharing approach with donor countries and agencies in order to reach their desired outcomes. As a result, Nigeria’s 21st-century health communication programs must take into account both linguistic minorities and majorities as well as the official language, English, in order to be effective.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE EXAMINATION

This study’s primary goal is to evaluate the of health communication in promoting healthy lifestyles. The following are some of the study’s more specific goals:

Assess the degree to which radio programs have influenced people’s attitudes and behaviors toward a healthy and active way of life.

To find out what people think about the health communication program and how they rate it.

An investigation on the that health communication plays in helping people lead healthier lives.

To see if radio may be an effective tool for educating rural residents about the need of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

To investigate the link between health communication and healthy lifestyles.

To find out what is preventing people from getting access to health information.

INTEREST IN THE RESEARCH

We hope that this article will allow health care providers and educators to better understand how to communicate effectively with patients to help them make educated health care decisions.
To the best of my knowledge, this study will contribute to the developing field of health communication by giving statistics on the impact of health communication in Nigeria.

Scholars in the area have undertaken very few indigenous studies, so it is hoped that this research will give a sound theoretical foundation for future indigenous studies.

To bridge the knowledge gap, the study will educate policymakers, journalists, doctors, and the general public about the importance of stepping up efforts to promote health and well-being among Nigerians. Media professionals will learn how to build and maintain successful health communication awareness through this program.

1.7 THE RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

A case study of a radio program on Nasarawa state broadcasting services in Kei, Nigeria, is used to examine the influence of health communication on the residents of Angwan Lambu (NBS)

1.8 RESTRICTIONS TO STUDENTS

Insufficient funds can hinder a researcher’s ability to get important materials, literature, or information, as well as in the collecting of data (internet, questionnaire and interview).
