Chapter one

Introduction

As society evolves, new forms of communication emerge. Different stages of societal evolution were distinguished by techniques of communication appropriate to the time.

For example, earlier means of communication required little technology or talent; yet, as the desire to connect with a larger audience rose, so did the channels, bringing writing and writing styles with it.

That age gave rise to theories like as the Bullet theory, which focusses on the powerful, direct effects of media on people. The hypothesis was founded on the mass media’s “push” model concept, in which gatekeepers decide what information the audience will receive and merely push it to the receiver. With the introduction of new technology, the focus has moved.

The Uses and Gratification Theory has actively superseded the Bullet Theory in the sense that when individuals do not seek out media to subscribe to, they can/have become the media. The audience has evolved from consumers to creators of their own media.

The online media operates on the “pull” approach, in which receivers select only the information they want. Tools such as blogging, podcasting, and video blogging enable the common person to extract useful information while simultaneously participating in content creation.

The evolution of the internet provides the technological foundation for the rise of social media platforms. The Internet is defined as a global system of interconnected computer networks that employ the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to service billions of users worldwide.

Omojuwa’s (2012) extended definition captures the essence and function of the internet: it is a network of networks made up of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks ranging in size from local to global, connected by a wide range of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies.

The Internet provides a wide range of information resources and services, including the interconnected hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure for email.

The Internet has transformed or reinterpreted most traditional communication channels, including telephone, music, cinema, and television, resulting in the creation of new services such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Internet Protocol Television.

Newsproject, book and other print media are adapting to Web site technology, or being transformed into blogging and web feeds. The Internet has permitted or accelerated new types of human connections through instant messaging, internet forums, and social networking.

The internet, as a new medium of communication, has extended and significantly boosted public participation in the media as a result of web 2.0’s widespread use.

online 2.0 refers to a wide range of online applications that allow for interactive information exchange and collaboration over the internet using a variety of media such as texts, photos, audio, and video (Addison, 2006).
