ABSTRACT
This work is intended to assist in engaging in and overcoming issues associated with diagnosing and maintaining local area networks. It is provided in such a simplified, user-friendly manner that even users who are not specialists in networking,

computer and/or communication engineering may relate to it and use its expertise to achieve various network solutions.

The software package that is the end product of this project work can be installed or executed on any of the machines inside the network whenever there is a need to monitor a computer network and/or troubleshoot in the case of a failure.

The desired solution for network rectification will be duplicated for the operator to use with the help of the software and the wealth of a comprehensive knowledge-base gathered within the software package. As a result, it is known as the “Expert System for Local Area Network Troubleshooting.”

INTRODUCTION TO CHAPTER ONE

1.1) BACKGROUND
In many ways, the Information Age has increased dependency on information and data communication, and the concentration appears to be centred on the internet and other networks.

Local Area Networks (LAN) are now commonly used to connect offices, enterprises, or organisations within a location; Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) are used to connect cities or significant geographical areas; and Wide Area Networks (WAN) are used to connect far larger geographical areas.

All of these technological advancements are focused towards efficient communication/dissemination of information in the shortest amount of time possible.

As a result, networks (particularly Local Area Networks or LAN) have become a standard feature for the majority of modern enterprises or organisations, whether they are an office, hospital, hotel, church premises, educational institutions, or 2

even residential properties, and so on. A network is a collection of devices or nodes linked together by communication links. These nodes or devices can be a computer, printer, or any other data transmitting and/or receiving device [1].

LANs are often used to connect different computers within a company to enable collaborative computing and knowledge management. This interconnectedness is sometimes linked via an internetwork. In such circumstances, the local computer network is connected to the internet via proper hardware (router, modem, etc.).

However, one important stumbling block in this success story is that networks have proven to be easily vulnerable to failure.

This could be due to a variety of circumstances, including issues with the interconnecting nodes (computers, printers, etc.), physical cable connections, communication gear equipment, and so on. All of these factors contribute to the network’s susceptibility.

Another key reason for this vulnerability is that, because to the interconnected nature of a network system, a problem affecting any node on the network might potentially propagate to other nodes within the network, resulting in the system being shut down. This is number three.

This is especially true for network topologies like the Star and Ring network topologies.
This vulnerability necessitates the provision of continuous/scheduled network repairs and maintenance, particularly in the event of a malfunction.

As a result, troubleshooting and maintenance will be an essential element of the network administration process.

1.2) OBJECTIVES AND AIMS
This project’s main goals are to provide for the following:
An expert system in the form of a software package that can run on any system in the computer network and assist in the troubleshooting and maintenance of the LAN.

The software package will serve as a guide to its users in carrying out troubleshooting and maintenance functions by providing step-by-step instructions.

An expert system that can act as a tutor/trainer in order to gain knowledge and insight into the operation of networks (particularly LANs).

1.3) THE NEED FOR PROJECT WORK
This project effort is critical because it can provide a way to effectively deal with the difficulty of real-time troubleshooting and network maintenance. A major difficulty in communication networks is the ability to maintain the network active at all working/needed periods.

Communication networks are notorious for their proneness to failure. As a result, any organisation that uses such a network should have quick and effective means of restoring a defective or malfunctioning network to operational status.

This will entail having readily available means of troubleshooting and/or maintaining the network and all of its equipment – both hardware and software.

This project performs a similar function.
Again, this project work will be used to deliver comprehensive information and training to non-network professionals and/or varied 5

Network operators with varying levels of experience in performing network activities.
The format in which this work was compiled will be extremely beneficial as a tutorial for network functions.

1.4) OBJECTIVES OF THIS WORK
This work is mostly concerned with Local Area Networks (LAN). It also includes internet network management and maintenance inside a specific geographic area, such as at an internet cyber café, a learning and research facility, or an office building linked to the internet (such as banks).

It is involved with offering aid in network maintenance activities through the use of software. Figure 1.1 depicts a block schematic of the major project development stages.

Although the scope of this study is not primarily focused on larger networks (WANs, MANs, etc.), it will undoubtedly serve as a guide in understanding the functioning of these other larger networks.

1.5) ORGANISATION FOR PROJECT REPORT
This project report was divided into five key segments that covered the complete scope of work.
The first chapter presents this project work while also providing a proper backdrop and knowledge into local area networks. It also describes why the project is necessary, the goals and objectives, and the extent of the job.

The second chapter examines additional related books and similar works on the subject. Expert systems, Artificial Intelligence, and computer networks were also investigated, as well as other pertinent academic research.
The research approach used for the work is shown in Chapter 3.

The complete system’s knowledge acquisition and modelling process was outlined. The methods involved in the system’s overall design and development were also clearly illustrated, as was the manner of applying the produced system.

The fourth chapter demonstrates the practical procedure of installing, testing, and executing the already constructed system. To fully illustrate this, appropriate diagrammatic examples were used.

Finally, in Chapter 5, an overview of the work produced is provided.
Recommendations for further growth and advancement of the work done thus far were also made.
