EFFECT OF TWITTER BAN ON MOBILE DATA USAGE

Chapter One: The Impact of Twitter Ban on Mobile Data Usage – Introduction

Background of the study.
Social media is a computer-based technology that allows people to share ideas, views, and information by forming virtual networks and communities. Social media is Internet-based by design, allowing users to instantly disseminate information via electronic methods. The content includes personal information, papers, movies, and images.

Users interact with social media using web-based software or apps on their computer, tablet, or smartphone. While social networking is popular in the United States and Europe, Asian countries such as Indonesia top the list.

1 Social media is used by around 3.8 billion individuals. Social media began as a way to connect with friends and family, but it was swiftly adopted by businesses seeking to reach out to customers via a popular new communication channel.

The ability to interact and exchange information with everyone on the planet, or with a big number of people at once, is what makes social media so powerful.

There are around 3.8 billion social media users globally. Every year, new social media programmes emerge, such TikTok and Clubhouse, which join the ranks of big social networks such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram.

The number of social media users in the United States is predicted to reach 257 million by 2023. According to Pew Research Centre, social media users are on average younger. Between the ages of 18 and 29, about 90% of people used some form of social media.

Furthermore, these customers are more educated and wealthier, with an annual salary exceeding $75,000. Social media can take the form of a wide variety of digitally enhanced activities. They include activities such as photo sharing, blogging, social gaming, social networks, video sharing, business networks, virtual worlds, reviews, and others.

Even governments and politicians utilise social media to connect with voters and constituents. Individuals use social media to communicate with their friends and extended families.

Some people will use social media apps to network for career opportunities, meet people with similar interests all around the world, and share their thoughts, feelings, insights, and emotions.

Participating in these activities creates a virtual social network. Social networking is an indispensable tool for businesses. Businesses utilise the platform to discover and engage with consumers, make sales through advertising and marketing, analyse consumer patterns, and give customer service or support. The value of social media in helping businesses cannot be emphasised.

It enables easier communication with customers and the integration of social activities into e-commerce sites. Its ability to collect data enables it to focus on marketing and market research.

It promotes goods and services by sending targeted, timely, and unique discounts and coupons to potential customers. Furthermore, social media-linked loyalty programmes may help to create client ties. While social media has some advantages, many individuals point out its disadvantages and compare excessive use to addiction.

Some claim it creates inattention, tension, and envy. The National Centre for Biotechnology Information has connected heavy social media usage to depression. Furthermore, social media can be a source of erroneous information and misinformation.

The platform’s ability to propagate misleading information had a significant impact on the 2016 American presidential election, as documented. This phenomenon capitalises on the power of social media, allowing anyone to reach millions of people with unverified or factually incorrect information.

When it comes to mobile phone plans, data consumption refers to how much data you use within a billing cycle (often one month). When you use your phone’s internet connection to complete any task, the data on your mobile phone plan is used. On cellphones, data is commonly used in the following ways:

Browse the internet.

Downloading and executing applications

Checking email.

post on social media

Activities include playing games and using iMessage on iPhones.

Watching streaming videos

Listening to streaming audio.

Using data when connected to a WiFi network does not count against your mobile phone plan’s data limit. With data overage fees becoming nearly extinct and unlimited data plans becoming increasingly popular, you may wonder why you need be concerned about your internet usage. It’s all about getting the best service for the least amount of money.

When a mobile phone plan includes a monthly data allowance, it often means that you will receive the fastest data rates until you have used up your monthly allotment. If your plan has a 5GB data restriction, you can use up to 5GB at full speed.

If you surpass the 5GB data usage restriction, you may experience sub-optimal internet rates. With this in mind, you may believe that unlimited data plans will provide you with the best data accessible throughout your payment cycle.

This is not the case, however. Most unlimited data mobile phone plans have a deprioritization threshold, sometimes known as a data limitation. This restriction serves as a soft cap for your data.

During times of significant network congestion, exceeding the threshold may result in decreased speeds. The deprioritization threshold increases with the tier (and consequently cost) of the cell plan. Deprioritization levels commonly range between 20GB and 50GB of monthly data consumption.
