EFFECT OF HARVESTING FREQUENCY ON LEAF AND POD YIELD OF FLUTED PUMPKIN IN OWERRI WEST, IMO STATE

Abstract

The value of fluted pumpkin crops in rural household economies cannot be overstated. Farmers in South-South Nigeria rely heavily on the fluted pumpkin for its several applications. However, the output is hampered by a plethora of restrictions, one of which is climate change.

The study looked at the consequences of climate change and the adaptation strategies employed by fluted pumpkin producers in Ikwerre Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State, Nigeria. The study’s respondents were chosen using a multi-stage sampling process.

Six towns were chosen at random from the twelve that comprise Ikwerre LGA, from which one hundred and eighty fluted pumpkin farmers were proportionately picked. To collect detailed information from respondents, an interview schedule and focus group discussion were used.

The percentage, frequency count, and mean were used to analyze the data. Data was presented using tables and charts. According to the study’s findings, 51 percent of respondents were female, the majority were married (77 percent), and they worked as full-time farmers (79 percent).

A rather substantial share (42 percent) had no formal education and stated that the primary goal of production was both consumption and selling (79 percent). The respondents assessed that the principal implications of climate change on fluted pumpkin production were unpredictable weather, changes in rainfall pattern, changes in rainfall distribution, lower yield of fluted pumpkin, and lower family income.

The most commonly adopted adaption method among respondents was a combination of fluted pumpkin production and other income-generating activities.

Based on the study’s findings, it was advised that individuals have access to improved extension services that can give needed farming inputs (fluted pumpkin seedlings, fertilizers, etc.) as well as helpful and relevant information on climate change and adaptation techniques.
