CHALLENGES OF NEWSPAPER CIRCULATION IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Newspaper circulation is gradually declining, with newspaper organizations now selling fewer copies. The problems are not far-fetched, as the majority of Nigerian readers are poor in reading and finance, making it difficult to purchase a copy of a newspaper for 150-200 naira daily.

They resort to looking for a newspaper stand where they can read freely or pay a small fee of 20 to 50 naira to read as many newspapers as they can. Another factor is that people can now read the news online on a daily basis. As a result, the study examined the challenges of circulation in Nigerian newspaper production through a case study of the Nigerian Tribune Newspaper.

The survey research method was used to collect data from the respondents, and one hundred and twenty (120) were chosen using a non-probability sampling method. According to the findings, the majority of respondents attributed high levels of illiteracy and the cost of newspapers as major reasons for poor newspaper circulation,

while many claimed that the price of newspapers is the reason for poor reader purchase. It is suggested that the government raise workers’ wages so that the majority of them can afford to buy at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Job opportunities should be made available to the millions of unemployed Nigerian youths in order to improve their standard of living.
