Assessment of the Relationship of Higher Institution and Surrounding Communities in Slum Development

ABSTRACT

The liberalisation of the building of tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria in recent years has produced new growth poles, as the places or settlements where the institutions are located have benefited from a variety of linked social and economic advantages. However, the development of several of these new tertiary institutions has not been backed by the necessary investment in on-campus student housing or hostel facilities.

As a result, this study examined the impact of Kogi State University (KSU) in Anyigba on slum growth in the town. Among other things, the study looks at the pattern of housing development and the level of conformity to physical development restrictions in the study region, as well as the features of the areas surrounding the KSU campus, where the majority of off-campus student hostels are located.

As part of the study, 364 copies of the questionnaire were distributed to heads of households and landlords of the residences where students lived by systematic random selection.

The purpose of administering the questionnaire was to assess the elements that impact housing development in communities surrounding KSU’s campus, as well as the level of adherence to existing physical planning requirements in the development of these off-campus student hostels.

Personal observation was also used to collect information about the visual quality of the research area. Descriptive and inferential analytical techniques were used to analyse data gathered using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).

Among other things, the study found that 68% of housing used for off-campus student hostels did not meet the required plot ratio of 45 to 60% and setbacks of 6m in the front, 3m on the sides, and 3m on the back, while 26% of the houses lacked toilets and other necessary amenities such as kitchens and bathrooms.

The survey also found that toilets are inadequate in 61.6% of houses with such facilities, 28.3% have bad quality softscape elements, 46.7% have fair hardscape quality, and 72% of access roads are in poor condition.

Among other things, the research advises more stringent physical development controls in the area to prevent the unattractive picture of unwholesome home construction and low environmental quality.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The environment is the unit from which the resources required for man’s survival and development are obtained. One may also argue that the environment plays an important influence in human development.

According to the World Bank (1998), the environment is the “National and Social conditions surrounding all Mankind, and including future generations”. The fact that the environment serves as a source of nutrition for both living and non-living things is common to all of the definitions provided above.

Slums, on the other hand, are areas of a city where living conditions are poor and houses are in poor condition. The Lagos metropolis, with Yaba as one of its local government areas, is a rapidly growing area with housing and environmental issues of both quality and quantity. This shortage is caused by the city’s inability to provide enough housing to fulfil demand, as well as an ever-increasing population.

As Lagos grows, it has become a focal point for all professionals, semi-professionals, skilled and unskilled labourers in its catchment region. Physical expansion was unavoidable since the Lagos metropolis’ population grew rapidly.

As a result, there is a housing scarcity and a rapid spread of urban deterioration and slums, which are unplanned and underserved neighbourhoods.

They lack essential municipal services like as water supply, sanitation, and waste collection, making them vulnerable to diseases, crime, and natural disasters. They also lack schools, clinics, and locations where the population can gather and socialise.

Chapter 4 Research: what you must know

Chapter 4 is the heart of your research project, where you present your findings and transform raw data into meaningful insights. The chapter serves to bridge the gap between your methodology and conclusions with concrete evidence in support of your research questions and hypotheses.

What makes Chapter 4 important is not the presentation of data, but rather your ability to analyze complex information, identify patterns, and draw meaningful conclusions from your research. This chapter directly relates to your research objectives stipulated in Chapter 1 and employs the methodology detailed in Chapter 3.

While this article focus on the parts of chapter 4, we are focusing on the difference between parts in qualitative research and parts in quantitative research.

The generic parts for an analysis chapter four is;

INTRODUCTION OF CHAPTER FOUR

DEMOGRAPHIC DATA

FINDINGS/RESULTS

DATA ANALYSIS

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

we have covered the details of these parts in comprehensive guide for writing chapter four here

For a reminder of how your research journey started, take a look at our handy guide to writing Chapter 1 of your research project.

What Chapter is Data Analysis?

Data analysis takes place primarily in Chapter 4, although its underpinnings are laid in Chapter 3, and its implications carry forward into Chapter 5. This chapter serves as the crucial link between your research methodology and your conclusions. Knowing this link is important to bringing coherence to your research project.

This, the analysis in Chapter 4, is built directly on the methodology described in Chapter 3. It applies the analytical procedures you described previously and then feeds into Chapter 5, where you discuss the implications of your findings. To better understand how Chapter 4 ties into your conclusion, you may find it helpful to review our guide on writing Chapter 5.

Chapter 4 Research Parts Qualitative

Chapter 4 of qualitative research offers a different view to data presentation and analysis. When working with qualitative data, researchers have to somehow manage the weaving of narratives, themes, and interpretations together, preserving scientific rigor.

Your writing in qualitative research should hold the flavor of your rich, descriptive data while being, at the same time, professional and academic. You may discuss patterns found in common responses of interviews on student behavior while situating these within the existing literature. This approach is particularly relevant when examining complex social issues, such as in our analysis of causes of immorality among students

This is the usual framework of a qualitative analysis: first, you introduce raw data—often interview excerpts, observational notes, or document analysis. Next, you point out and explain the themes that emerged during your analysis. Finally, you interpret these themes within the context of your research questions and theoretical framework.

The parts for chapter 4 qualitative research can be summarized as;

Introduction Section: Restates research purpose, questions, and chosen methodology

Demographic Overview: Details about study participants and research setting

Thematic Analysis: Main themes and subthemes identified

Participant Responses: Direct quotes supporting each theme

Pattern Analysis: Relationships between different themes

Summary of Findings: Key insights discovered through analysis

Transition to Discussion: Link to Chapter 5

Chapter 4 Presentation, Analysis, and Interpretation of Data Qualitative Example

The presentation of your research findings needs much attention to organization and clarity. When presenting qualitative data, researchers need to create a narrative that conveys the depth and richness of their findings while maintaining scientific rigor. Just like the analysis done on the research project on how to eradicate cultism in Nigerian schools. Your presentation might begin with demographic information about the participants, followed by thematic analysis of interview responses or observational data.

Consider this framework for presenting qualitative data in Chapter 4:

Theme 1: Economic Challenges
“Participants frequently mentioned unemployment as a recurring issue.”

Theme 2: Social Impacts

Evidence: Participant A stated, “Unemployment increases stress in families.”

Analysis: Discuss societal trends that align with this observation.

Summary: Conclude each theme with a recap linking to the study objectives.

In presenting qualitative data, researchers should weave together direct quotes, observational notes, and analytical insights. For example, when discussing the experiences of participants, you might begin with a contextual description, followed by relevant quotes that illustrate major themes, and then provide your interpretation of these findings. This approach allows readers to understand both the raw data and your analytical process.

Chapter 4 Research Parts Quantitative

Quantitative research in Chapter 4 requires clarity and precision in the presentation of numerical data and statistical analyses. It would help your readers understand both the basic characteristics of your data and the sophisticated relationships between the variables if your logical presentation sequence moved from descriptive statistics to more complex analytical procedures.

Quantitative research involves much attention to detail in performing and interpreting statistical analyses, from simple descriptive statistics to complex inferential analyses; each of the statistical tests should be justified and explained. Results are also presented in a way that is understandable to both an expert and non-expert reader.

call us to help you with your chapter four, Send Us A WhatsApp Message Click here or call (+234) 0813 2546 417

For example, a research article on academic performance, such as our article entitled “How to Make a First Class in Nigerian Universities,” would require the presentation of a whole different set of statistical measures, such as grade distributions, correlation analyses, and probably regression models predicting academic success.

The parts for chapter 4 quantitative research can be summarized as;

Introduction of Variables: Dependent and independent variables

Descriptive Statistics: Mean, median, mode, standard deviation (you must use Tables and Figures, Visual representation of results)

Inferential analysis: here you use your inferential statistical techniques like regression correlation and anova then examine p-values and confidence intervals

Hypothesis Testing Results: Accept/reject null hypothesis

Summary of Results: Clear statement of statistical findings

Chapter 4 Interpretation of Data

Generally, this is going to require an almost perfect balance between detailed analysis and broader synthesis: your interpretation will bridge the gap between raw data and meaningful conclusions. Interpretation of research findings should reflect both the immediate implications of your findings and the broader context of the research field. Most commonly, this would involve comparing your findings with the existing literature and explaining the reasons for unexpected results.

For instance, if you’re conducting research on production processes, similar to our article on formulation and production of emulsion paint, you need to consider multiple variables that might influence your results

For more guidance on research writing structure, you might find our article on the difference between research project and term paper writing helpful.

Chapter 4 Research Parts PDF and PPT Resources

Knowing how important available research resources are, we offer multiple avenues to study the components of Chapter 4. Our PDF resource offers detailed samples and templates that you can use as guides during your writing. You will see examples of the presentation of data, frameworks for analysis, and guidelines for interpretation in these documents.

The PowerPoint presentations give visual portrayals of many of the important concepts and processes associated with Chapter 4 writing. These are especially useful when you’re getting ready for your research defense. Speaking of which, check out our guide to common questions during research defense, in order to be more prepared for presenting your findings.

One will have far less interaction and personalization in the access of materials through Slideshare than in directly received PDF or PPT resources. While Slideshare makes things easily accessible online, the direct resources often include other bonus notes, examples, and custom templates that can be adapted for your exact research needs.

Common Mistakes When Writing Chapter 4

Writing Chapter 4 of your research project, every researcher is prone to several pitfalls that might lead to poor-quality work. One major mistake that people make is complicating the analysis process; hence, making it hard for your readers to trace your arguments. For example, in quantitative research, some writers present complex statistical analyses without adequately explaining their relevance to the research questions.

Similarly, within qualitative research, there is the tendency for researchers to focus so much on minute details that they miss the broader themes and patterns.

The other common error is the lack of connectivity between data presentation and analysis. Some researchers would go ahead to present long lists of data without any interpretation, leaving the reader to make their own interpretations. This can quickly undermine the scholarly nature of your work. In discussing the findings, each piece of data must have a purpose and contribute to answering your research questions. tips on making assumptions in a research paper

Tools for Writing Chapter 4 Effectively

To understand how to stay focused in your research, read our article on tips for making assumptions in a research paper. Significantly, documentation errors can also derail Chapter 4 quality. When referring to previous research or theoretical frameworks that the analysis is based on, proper citation and referencing should be performed. For further clarification on this topic, you may find our guide on knowing the difference between a reference and a bibliography valuable.

Linking Chapter 4 to Other Chapters

The interconnectedness of your research project’s chapters is crucial for maintaining coherence and logical flow. Chapter 4 should seamlessly connect with your introduction, methodology, and conclusion chapters. Your data analysis needs to directly address the research questions and objectives established in Chapter 1, while utilizing the methodological framework outlined in Chapter 3.

Think of Chapter 4 as the bridge between your methodology and conclusions. Data analysis has to show how the methods you have chosen yielded results answering your research questions. The link is even more important for writing the discussion chapter, since your findings in Chapter 4 provide a foundation on which you build your interpretations and implications in Chapter 5.

When you refer to previous chapters, be sure to use your terms and theoretical frameworks consistently. For example, if you defined certain terms or concepts in your introduction, now stick to those definitions when you analyze your data. This consistency allows readers to follow your argument and see how the different parts of your research come together.

CAUSES OF EXCESS FLOOD

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of The Study

Flooding is the overflow of water into a normally dry environment, causing flooding and devastation to plants and animals, including humans. Its damage can extend to man-made structures and infrastructures (Udosen, 2011).

Most flood definitions include the damage they produce and vary according to their sources, types, and magnitude. Ating (2003) describes flood caused by rivers as a relatively high flow that overtakes the natural channels given for run-off as well as a high stream that overtops its natural or manmade banks.

Flood is also defined by Wolf (1965) as a high rate of flow in water sources and the inundation of ordinarily dry terrain. According to West (1991), a flood is a body of water that rises to overflow its banks or low-lying areas.

Floods are known to wreak significant harm to people’s lives, belongings, and properties all over the world. Flooding is responsible for one-third of all natural catastrophe deaths, injuries, and damage (Askew, 1999; Etuonovbe, 2011).

People, buildings, infrastructure, agriculture, and open recreational spaces are common “receptors” to this damage. Flooding also has enormous social and emotional costs, which are typically broad and indiscriminate in flooded communities.

They include being displaced from one’s home, losing personal goods, and feeling fearful and insecure as a result of such an incident. Flooding can have a ripple effect on the economy, causing firms to lose customers, inventory, data, and production. Tourism, farming, and cattle are all potentially affected.

Flooding can render utilities and transportation infrastructure inoperable. Portable water supplies may get contaminated during a flood, causing immediate health impacts in humans and animals. Other critical infrastructures may potentially be affected, as was the case in Britain during the summer floods of 2007 (RIBA, 2009).

Even in a sophisticated country like the United Kingdom, the Association of British Insurers estimates that the cost of the July 2007 flooding in insurance claims alone was more than three billion pounds (RIBA, 2011). The flooding pattern is consistent throughout the world.

Flooding in Nigeria, for example, has displaced millions of people, wrecked businesses, polluted water sources, and increased the risk of disease transmission (Baiye, 1988, Akinyemi, 1990, Nwaubani, 1991, and Edward- Adebiyi, 1997).

a) Flooding sources Tidal flooding, fluvial flooding, ground water, pluvial flooding, flooding from sewers, and flooding from man-made infrastructure are the six recognised sources of flooding. Ø Flooding caused by tidal action A combination of low pressure weather systems and high tides might overwhelm sea and river defences.

The cycle of the tides where drainage is accessible limits its duration. Fluvial flooding occurs when the capacity of a river is surpassed by rainfall or snow, resulting in a rising water level that can overflow onto floodplains along the river.

Ground Water – As ground water levels rise, low-lying areas adjacent to aquifers may flood. This flood is mostly seasonal and slow. Pluvial Flood -Refers to surface water from rainwater run-off, primarily from urban or rural terrain with low absorbency.

As development increases in urban areas, land surfaces grow in their regions of non-permeable surfaces, combining into severe rainfall, resulting in localised flooding. Flooding from sewers occurs when there are malfunctioning sewers or when sewage capacity is routinely surpassed due to excessive surface water runoff in a short period of time.

Man-made infrastructure flooding occurs when man-made structures such as canals and reservoirs fail, flooding communities downstream (RIBA 1999).

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

Although floods can occur at any time of year, there are some seasonal trends for flooding in Uyo Local Government Area based on the various natural processes that create floods.

Rainy Season floods are caused by high rainfall on wet ground, which penetrates into previously dry lands and causes extensive damage to people and property.

1.3 Objectives Of The Study

The primary goal of this research was to identify the immediate and remote causes of regular floods in Uyo. It specifically seeks to;

1. Identify the primary causes that may be more responsible for the current flooding in Uyo City.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What are the causes of the city of Uyo’s regular flooding?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

Ho: Uyo city does not experience frequent flooding.

Hi: The city of Uyo is frequently flooded.

1.6Significance Of The Research

This research will assist in determining the reasons of the recent flooding in Uyo City. A number of physical flood characteristics were considered in order to accomplish this successfully. These key physical features are as follows:

a) Water depth

c) Inundation duration

c) Inundation zone

d) Flow velocity

e) Relationships between frequency and recurrence

f) Flood time (also known as flood time lapse or flood-to-peak interval).

Seasonality (g)

h) Maximum flood

i) The discharge rate rises and falls.

i) The sediment load and

k) Total volume of flood run-off.

1.7 The Study’s Scope

The research looks into the causes of excessive flooding in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Because of the constant flood occurrences in Uyo during rainy seasons and her representative nature to other flood prone locations, Uyo Local Government Area is utilised as the case study for this research.

1.8 Limitations Of The Study

The study area is Uyo metropolis. This city is located in the Uyo Local Government Area. It is densely populated, with nearly all of Uyo falling within the Capital City Development Area (UCCDA).

However, the study has some shortcomings, most notably in the area of data gathering. Other considerations that would limit the scope of the investigation include financial constraints and the amount of time available to complete the study.

1.Definition Of Terms

Flood: A vast amount of water flowing beyond its customary bounds, particularly across typically dry ground.

Uyo LGA: Akwa Ibom State’s capital in Nigeria.

IMPACT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The open air market functions as an institution for the exchange of commodities and services, as well as a location for the realisation of economic desire (Debra, 2071). Open air marketplaces are extremely important in people’s economic lives, particularly in the commodities distribution chain.

It is also an important cultural environment that contributes to a town’s economic base and the local government’s tax base.

Markets, according to Berry and Muli (2007), are not only economic institutions, but also social entities that help to forge links between people of various ethnic groups, racial backgrounds, and cultural traits, as well as meeting places for socio-cultural, religious, and political activities.

Open-air marketplaces provide a physical framework for interaction between urban and rural cultures, particularly in West African areas where development rules are lax.

Open air markets are government-designated locations where people gather to buy and trade items (Debra, 2017). They are public areas where food, clothing, home furnishings, plants, and other items are sold.

They are vibrant with the colours, smells, and sounds of people from many ethnic backgrounds walking around looking for good buys. Most African countries’ open air marketplaces are plagued by poor road, drainage, and water supply infrastructure.

Markets can be classified as traditional or modern depending on variables such as the commodities sold, the services supplied, and the location, duration of operation, and physical settings, among others. Markets have also been categorised based on their temporal specialism.

This is what distinguishes one market from another. Thus, markets are classified as daily, periodic, and extraordinary. Daily markets, according to Taiwo and Ajayi (2013), are part of large market hubs.

Daily markets feature a big volume of trade once or twice a week and have some characteristics with periodic markets based on the schedule time agreed upon by the community. In smaller market places, periodic markets are held on one or more specified days each week or month.

Special markets are frequently held at annual fairs and can last anywhere from one day to a week to three months. Cooper (2008) found that the most popular traditional market in any settlement is the king’s market, which is near to the palace. This is seen in the traditional city structures of Nigeria.

The king’s market normally precedes all others. However, because things are transitioning from the traditional to the modern market, it is not necessarily the largest traditional market (Muli, 2007).

According to Cooper (2008), this viewpoint is obvious in metropolitan areas where several marketplaces have been built through urban planning to reduce congestion. He went on to say that women are the majority of traders there since trading is an excellent vocation for women because it is so flexible.

Daily markets are held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. This makes them popular because they are open the most hours. Some daily markets specialise in the exchange of certain items, whereas others deal in a wide range (variety) of goods.

These traits entice shoppers to visit them at any time of day. According to Hodder and Ukwu (1999), one of the most distinguishing characteristics of daily markets that distinguishes them from periodic markets is a clear association in their location with the distribution and hierarchy of settlements.

Belgaum (2012) reaffirmed that the bulk of traders in traditional markets work on a daily basis, with only a small percentage operating on a periodic basis.

Environmental risks have been shown to have a major impact on human health, either directly by exposing humans to dangerous agents or indirectly by affecting life-sustaining ecosystems (WHO, 2009).

Although the specific proportion of environmental variables to illness development and death cannot be known, the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that thirteen million fatalities are attributed to preventable environmental causes each year (WHO, 2009).

The report also estimates that environmental factors account for 24% of the global disease burden (healthy life years lost) and 23% of all deaths (premature mortality), with the environmental burden of diseases being 15 times higher in developing countries than in developed countries due to differences in exposure to environmental risks and access to healthcare.

The most severe driving forces in the environmental effects of open air markets include agricultural intensification, industrialization, and environmental pollution, as well as overcrowding.

Major environmental threats to health are related with widespread poverty and severe lack of public infrastructure, such as access to drinking water, sanitation, and healthcare, as well as rising concerns of industrial pollution, in developing nations. Whatever the location, open air market space is quite limited (Taiwo, 2013).

The environmental effects of open air markets are primarily the result of human activity in the area. On local market days, for example, the entire open market area becomes a busy site full of temporary businesses spread out on both sides of the road (Helloakwaibom, 2014).

When a large swarm of customers enters this already crowded environment, it becomes unmanageably oppressive and uncomfortable.

This results in air and noise pollution for approximately five to six hours of market time. The presence of markets in Essien Udim is beneficial since commercial activities are the backbone of many economies, allowing people to purchase, sell, and transact their enterprises so that life may continue on routinely and smoothly.

However, due to the inherent risks, a lack of supervision in the proliferation of markets and trade spells doom for such places. Eighmy (2002) also identified the encroachment of open spaces by market and service businesses as one of the most serious issues confronting Nigerians in recent years.

On the other side, one element associated with open air markets is waste generation, which, if not well handled, increases public health hazards. Animal wastes, human wastes, equipment wastes, and wastes from various food products offered at such markets are among the wastes.

suitable hygiene in open air markets has not been a key priority in many developing nations, such as Nigeria; as a result, markets pop up intermittently with no regard for environmental sustainability, such as the provision of suitable trash dumps and public bathrooms.

The importance of keeping market areas clean cannot be overstated in order to avoid incidents such as food poisoning. According to Gellar, as described in Fadamiro (2010),

“human behaviour contributes significantly to the degradation of our environment, while certain changes in human behaviour can contribute significantly to environmental protection.” Many studies conducted in various market centres proved the impact of people on the maintenance and protection of the market environment.”

Environmental amenities are in high demand, yet resources are scarce. The growing population in rural areas has actually put more strain on its amenities and environment, as well as those of open air markets and their surroundings. Environmental degradation caused by economic forces produces new challenges.

Much refuse is generated as a result of the volume of activities that occur on a daily basis, particularly in the leading foodstuffs and general goods markets in Obon Annang Market (Ukana), Affiong Etor Market (Ikpe Annang), and Edet Market (Urua Akpan), all of which are located in the Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

These garbage dumps linger in the vicinity of sellers for an extended period of time, decomposing with a strong stink, blocking roadways and limiting easy passage in and out of the markets. People and industries in many countries today damage rivers, streams, and lakes by dumping rubbish (Ogunbameru & Rotimi, 2006).

As a result, dumping garbage on land causes environmental contamination in the form of air, water, and land pollution. Land pollution from garbage and sewage emits an awful scent and is unsightly.

This reduces the oxygen in the air and may be one of the reasons why, according to the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) (2009), air pollution is one of the most common forms of pollution worldwide.

Again, poor waste and sewage disposal contaminates the well through dirty flowing water and pollutes the water used to prepare meals in market eateries as well as individual water intake. The piles of dirt also block water from flowing into other surface wells, inhibiting the digging of more wells and rendering existing water unsuitable for drinking.

The contaminated water that rushes in from dirty gutters pollutes shallow wells, which are the principal source of water supply in open marketplaces. All of this can predispose marketers and their children to water-borne diseases like as typhoid, dysentery, diarrhoea, and cholera, as well as other bodily discomforts such as odour and the unsightly sights of a garbage dump.

On a daily basis, one may hear music booming from various locations of the market. Vendors shouting to market their items and loudspeakers blasting at full power contribute to noise pollution. Ear drums and communication abilities of individuals in the vicinity are harmed.

Waste disposal is another important source of issue. Against this backdrop, the study intends to examine the environmental effects of open air markets in the Essen Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, and to identify appropriate solutions for dealing with such challenges.

1.2 Statement Of Research Problem

Over time and place, open air market existence has helped humanity. Humans have existed with the consciousness of buying and selling at various locations and times, regardless of where these activities take place.

Open air markets are gatherings of sellers and customers at a predetermined location and time, usually between 0800 and 1800 hours. The local market days in Essien Udim Local Government Area include Obo, Uruabom, Ekpa, Edet, Editaha, Atim, Ofiongetor, and Edetobo.

Typically, open-air markets draw a huge number of sellers and buyers. The development of open air markets in strategic locations in Essien Udim LGA not only improves people’s socioeconomic lives and raises the volume of economic activity in the area, but it also improves food security, political awareness, cultural identification, and economic boosting.

However, these activities have degraded the environment around the market, affecting the lives of individuals who live in and around the region directly or indirectly. The environmental effects of an open air market are visible in the lives of people and their surroundings when vehicles, tricycles, bicycles, and wheelbarrows are parked carelessly, resulting in the closure of access roads.

This increases congestion and makes it difficult to access marketplaces. Without an organised traffic management system, the surge of people on market days puts additional strain on traffic movement for both pedestrians and vehicles.

The lack of attention paid by individuals in underdeveloped nations, particularly Nigeria and Essien Udim, to clean and safe environments is a key obstacle to the maintenance and sustenance of sanitary market environments.

Wearing a nose mask, covering their ears when walking past a DJ Jockey, taking a longer route to the market rather than the closest route, relocating their stores/shops along the roadside or elsewhere within/outside the market vicinity, and degrading the beauty of the roads within and around the market are all manifestations of these environmental effects.

Despite government intervention measures, these evidences from people and their surroundings are becoming more prevalent.

Against these manifestations and backdrops, examinations of the consequences of open air markets in Obon Annang, Affiong Etor, and Edet Market in Essien Udim LGA in Akwa Ibom State are required.

1.3 Research Questions

i. What are the open air market’s operational procedures and economics? ii. What are the roles and classifications of an open air market?

iii. What are the causes of open-air market environmental degradation?

iv. What is the connection between open air market causes and environmental degradation?

v. What steps are being made to mitigate the environmental impact of open-air markets?

1.4 Aims and Objectives Of The Study

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the environmental effects of open air markets in Akwa Ibom State’s Essien Udim Local Government Area. The objectives are as follows in order to attain the following goal:

i. Examine the open air markets’ operational processes in Essien Udim LGA.

ii. Investigate the purposes and varieties of open-air markets.

iii. Investigate the sources of environmental degradation in open-air markets.

iv. Determine the link between the open market and environmental damage.

v. Evaluate attempts to mitigate the environmental impact of open-air markets.

1.5 Hypothesis of Research

H0: In Essien Udim Local Government Area, there is no substantial association between open air markets and environmental deterioration.

H1: There is a strong link between open-air markets and environmental deterioration in the Essien Udim Local Government Area.

1.6 Importance of the Study

Flooding, inappropriate garbage disposal, and pollution of various types are all environmental challenges associated with open air markets. This project will raise awareness among people and the surrounding community on how to provide solutions to environmental issues, particularly when they are at their worst.

This study will improve the locals’ health because they will realise that their everyday actions in the markets and surrounding areas can either conserve their environment today or harm it for future generations.

This research would aid all faculties of environmental studies in Nigerian institutions because it will act as a reference resource for current and future studies.

This research will aid in the discovery of environmental problems and provide a foundation for adequate environmental planning and market redevelopment, ensuring the provision of necessary facilities and the maintenance of proper conditions within and around these open-air markets.

Furthermore, the need for this research stems from Essien Udim Local Government Area’s vicinity to Ikot Ekpene, Abak, Ikono, and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas. These are some of the most prosperous areas in Akwa Ibom State. As a result, the Essien Udim Local Government Area is strategically located to be influenced by these cities.

This allows for engagement and provides much-needed push for speedier integration and development. The added requirement for this research is related to the political, economic, and socio-cultural roles of Akwa Ibom State’s Essien Udim Local Government Area.

Furthermore, this research will be used as a resource by federal, state, and local government health and environmental authorities.

This research will benefit the federal and state ministries of agriculture, lands, and housing because it will act as a reference source for any information they may seek regarding the research subject and content.

Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) interested in local community health issues would also use this research as a reference source.

1.7 Scope of Study

The study is geographically limited to the effects of open air markets on the environment in the Essien Udim Local Government Area. Essien Udim is a town in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, with a population of around 192,668 according to the 2006 population census (Helloakwaibom.com, 2014).

The scope of this research revolves around the environmental effects of open-air markets in Ukana’s Obong Annang Market, Uruan Akpan’s Edet Market, and Ikpe Annang’s Affiong Etor Market, all of which are located in Akwa Ibom State’s Essien Udim Local Government Area.

In the Local Government, there are eight market days: Obo, Uruabom, Ekpa, Edit, Editaha, Atim, Ofiongetor, and Edet Obo. The size of the community affected by the effects of the open air market is also limited in this study.

Contextually, the study focuses on the environmental effects of open-air markets in the Essien Udim Local Government Area.

WASTE GENERATION AND MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

INTRODUCTION

Background Of The study

Waste generation and disposal are an inextricable component of any developing or industrial society. Over the last decade, waste from both residential and commercial sources has increased dramatically in Nigeria.

Every time a householder goes to the store or the open market, he adds to the mound of rubbish. It is conceivable to cite numbers indicating that waste output amounts to millions of tonnes.

In the last 15 years, the proportion of Nigerians living in cities and urban regions has more than doubled.

Cities and metropolitan regions are constantly expanding, which adds to massive amounts of solid and liquid waste creation. Waste management is an issue of national and worldwide concern.

The problem is not the volume of waste, but the ability or unwillingness of governments, individuals, and waste disposal companies to keep up with the work of managing waste and the environment.

There is no doubt that a polluted environment has an impact on people’s living standards, aesthetic sensibility, health, and thus the quality of their life.

The implication is that incorrect disposal or storage of this waste can endanger society by polluting the air, land, and especially water. In this study, we will concentrate on household garbage. We will discuss some of the issues that have arisen in the handling of this type of trash in Nigeria today.

It will be observed that Nigeria has not done well in addressing the problem of residential trash. This is despite the fact that improved management solutions for home trash management exist today and have been applied in many regions.

We shall make proposals to help address this issue, which appears to be thwarting the efforts of international organisations, the federal government, city authorities, states, and specialists alike.

The ineffective solid waste management plans and arrangements implemented in Nigerian cities give the false impression that urban waste management issues are intractable.

This stems from the fact that collection and evacuation rates are permanently slower than creation rates, making solid waste accumulation a major cause of environmental nuisance in Nigerian towns. As a result, waste management is concerned with the interaction of waste generation, storage, collection, and final disposal (Omuta, 1988).

Sada (1984) stated that in 1980, a total of 100 metric tonnes of solid trash were piled up everyday in Benin City. This is due to the fact that, whereas around 350 metric tonnes of solid waste are generated daily, the maximum rate of evacuation attainable was only 250 metric tonnes per day.

According to Uchegbu (1988), large cities in Nigeria, such as Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Kano, produce an average of 46kg of solid trash per person, every day.

People consume more and generate more garbage as their living conditions grow. Because of its pleasant living environment, Uyo city has transformed into a resort centre since the 1990s, attracting an influx of weekend leisure seekers.

These weekend visitors simply come to Uyo to rest, eat, and enjoy themselves, contributing significantly to the city’s weekly garbage generation. According to Atuegbu (2007), 500 to 850 metric tonnes of trash are created everyday in Uyo.

The rate of waste generation at Itam market is so great that a refuse disposal site that was removed the day before might be replaced with an equal volume of waste the next morning, giving the false appearance that it was never cleared before. The situation is similar to AkpanAdem market in Uyo Metropolis.

Statement Of The Problem

Many people in African countries, including Nigeria, see the concern for appropriate waste management systems as a minor issue that may divert focus away from the more pressing and critical problem of achieving rapid economic growth. This mindset is influenced in part by the assumption that environmental deterioration and waste generation are unavoidable costs of progress.

significance of the research

The goal of this research is to propose waste management solutions that will successfully handle waste management concerns, and Uyo metropolitan was utilised for the study.

Objectives Of The study’s

This study’s aims include, but are not limited to;

1. To find out if there are any waste management measures in Uyo.

2. To see if there is a link between waste generation and waste management plan.

Research Questions

The following questions were posed in order to attain the aforementioned objectives:

1. Is there a waste management policy in place in the city of Uyo?

2. What is the significance of the relationship between trash generation and waste management strategy?

3. What are the trash management measures in Uyo metropolis?

Research Hypotheses

There are no waste management strategies in Uyo metropolitan. : There are trash management strategies in Uyo metropolis. There is no substantial association between garbage generation and waste management strategies. There is a strong link between garbage generation and waste management strategies.

Limitations Of the Study

The study was conducted to explore trash management solutions in a city. The investigation was hampered by two key factors: money constraints and time constraints.

Scope Of The study

The research focuses on garbage generation and management strategies, with Uyo as a case study.

Definitions Of Terms

Waste is a material, substance, or by-product that is undesired or unusable.

Waste management is the process of collecting, transporting, and disposing of garbage, sewage, and other waste products.

Waste Management Strategy: This is the process of dealing with human and organic waste, which includes trash minimization, handling, processing, storage, recycling, transport, and final disposal.

Relationship Between Land Use Policy and Tourism Development in Nigeria

Abstract

This study used a quantitative survey research design to analyse the complex interaction between existing land use policies and tourism development, focussing on the Owu Waterfalls in Ilorin, Nigeria. The study sought to shed light on the impact of these regulations while also identifying obstacles and potential areas for improvement.

The primary data collecting instrument used in the study was a structured questionnaire, which included closed-ended and Likert-scale questions to systematically collect both quantitative and qualitative data.

The questionnaire was designed in accordance with accepted survey research guidelines (Saunders et al., 2019), ensuring that it met the study objectives. The target population consisted of tourism industry stakeholders such as travellers, local communities, legislators, and business owners.

A full sample frame was created, and a sample size of 120 respondents was chosen for statistical significance and practicality within the study’s scope. Convenient sampling was used, given practical limits, to obtain data from accessible and willing participants. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27, a powerful platform known for its statistical analytic skills (Goddard & Melville, 2020).

The study used a t-test to assess hypotheses on the relationship between land use policy flexibility, alignment with sustainability goals, and tourism development obstacles. The findings demonstrated substantial relationships between land use policy flexibility and tourist development level, as well as the impact of poor policy alignment with sustainable tourism aims on tourism development issues.

The study given in Table 4.17 revealed mean scores that indicated various degrees of agreement among respondents. Finally, the study emphasised the necessity of flexible land use policies, alignment with sustainable tourism goals, and community engagement in achieving effective tourism development at Owu Falls.

Recommendations include improving policy flexibility, increasing community involvement, prioritising environmental conservation, optimising infrastructure development, and encouraging stakeholder collaboration.

This study adds vital insights to the realm of tourism development, laying the groundwork for informed policy changes and sustainable practices around Owu Waterfalls.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

Background for the Study

Tourism development is a critical driver of worldwide economic growth that catalyses socioeconomic transformation. This phenomena is especially relevant in Nigeria, where tourist potential remains high, particularly in areas endowed with natural wonders such as the Owu Waterfalls in Ilorin.

According to Adedotun (2017), the complex interaction between land use policies and tourism development is critical in determining whether tourist attractions succeed or fail. Land use rules determine how land can be used in certain locations, influencing the accessibility, preservation, and sustainability of tourist spots.

In the instance of Owu Waterfalls in Ilorin, the natural wonder not only captivates with its spectacular beauty but also has the potential to become a substantial economic benefit for the region.

Adeniji (2018) points out that sustainable physical development in Nigeria, particularly in locations with distinctive attractions such as waterfalls, necessitates careful consideration of land use policies. These rules must strike a fine balance between protecting the natural environment and promoting tourism activities.

The success of tourism at Owu Waterfalls depends on land use rules that are aligned with the goals of sustainable tourism development.

The difficulties in harmonising these two criteria highlight the complexities of the interaction between land use policy and tourism development. Adeniji (2018) highlights the future problems of sustainable physical development in Nigeria, emphasising the importance of a thorough understanding of how land use policies affect tourism.

The difficulties may originate from flaws in existing policies, which prevent the full realisation of the economic potential of tourism locations such as Owu Waterfalls. These problems could include infrastructural development, environmental conservation, and community engagement.

Comparative analysis of rent differential in selected residential areas in Obio/akpor Rivers State

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of rent differentials in certain residential neighbourhoods of Obio/akpor Rivers State. The study employed the following objectives for analysis:

To identify the factors that have the greatest influence on any such rent differentials in the study area, to determine the factors that influence any differentials in residential house rent that may exist in the study area, and to determine the relationship between residential housing rent and the income classes of the study area’s household heads.

The researcher collected data through a combination of questionnaires, interviews, and self-observation. The data was gathered from several landlords and tenants in Obio/Akpor, Rivers state, for the selected properties. The acquired data was analysed based on interpretation and conclusions, and recommendations were given.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The provision of adequate housing that is safe, secure, accessible, affordable, and sanitary is a fundamental human right, as established in the United Nations Habitat Agenda, and housing is commonly recognised as the second most essential human necessity. It is a basic need for human survival and an important component in improving citizens’ quality of life.

This widely established truth has been recognised by successive Nigerian governments, as evidenced by pockets of coordinated projects and programs in mass housing creation over the years. Despite these initiatives, disparities in housing rent remain a significant issue.

Effective housing rent involves many actors, necessitating effective partnership collaboration and information. The significant shortfall in housing provision and rent has been attributed to the inadequacy of the existing national housing policy (1991) in meeting current challenges and economic trends, as well as guiding sector development.

Housing, in all its ramifications, is more than just shelter, because it encompasses all the social services and utilities that go to make a community or neighbourhood a living environment.

The problem of housing in Nigeria is large and complex, with noticeable regional variances. Furthermore, the issues posed by the rapid pace of unregulated and unplanned urban growth are enormous.

Millions of people live in substandard and subhuman conditions, marked by slumps, squalor, and drastically inadequate social services.

The housing problem in our cities is not limited to the number of housing units, infrastructure, the disparity in housing rent, or the environment; the result is growing overcrowding in homes, neighbourhoods, and communities, as well as increased pressure on infrastructural facilities such as roads, drainages, power supply, and a rapidly deteriorating environment.

The situation is slightly different in rural areas, where the problems are primarily due to insufficient and poor infrastructural facilities such as roads, drainages, water, power supply, differences in housing rent, and basic social amenities (schools, health care facilities, etc.).

Analysis Of Intra Urban Traffic Problems In Rivers State

Abstract

This study focused on the analysis of intra-urban traffic problems in Rivers State, namely the Port Harcourt Metropolis. The study’s overall population is 200 federal road safety professionals in Rivers state.

The researcher employed questionnaires to collect data. Descriptive A survey research design was used for this investigation. The survey included 133 respondents who served as marshal inspectors, rout commanders, assistant rout commanders, and junior officers. The acquired data was organised into tables and analysed using simple percentages and frequencies.

Chapter one

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Cities and traffic congestion have coexisted since the earliest large human settlements, and the same forces that attract people to large urban areas also cause sometimes-intolerable levels of traffic congestion on urban streets and thoroughfares (OECD, 2007).

Traffic congestion in cities has been a concern since the early twentieth century, and it remains one of the most persistent issues confronting road users and urban planners around the world. According to Engwitch (1992), “Global Traffic Volume (GTV) would double between 1990 and the year 2020 and again by 2050.”

This type of growth trend, as projected for the end of 2020 and 2050, provides an indication of what the future of traffic congestion would entail for those living in urban areas. Traffic congestion is increasing in both large and small cities around the world, creating annoyance to those making intra-city business trips.

As a result, transportation congestion increases costs and reduces work hours (Atubi, 2008). Traffic congestion has been noted as a fundamental feature of Nigerian transport challenges; practically all state capital cities in Nigeria now suffer from traffic congestion (Moses, 2011).

The case of the Portharcourt metropolis is similar, with long traffic jams recorded in many parts of the city, and it appears that road traffic management tactics and officials are incapable of resolving the problem.

The important point here is that ways of mitigating this mobility problem and ensuring a smooth flow of urban traffic have been carried out in different studies, as exemplified by the work of urban transport scholars; some identified the causes and dimensions of traffic problems (Aderamo, 1990 & Bello, 1993).

Some investigated transport solutions (Ogunsanya, 1987; Omiunu, 1988; Bolade, 1989 & Ameyan, 1996), while others investigated traffic management systems (Ukpata & Etika, 2012; Olaogbebikan et al., 2013).

However, previous studies’ conventional approaches to traffic management, such as one-way streets, odd and even numbers, flyovers, the construction of new routes, the use of para-mass transit, park and ride systems, and so on, have failed to eliminate traffic congestion in Rivers state, particularly Portharcourt.

As a result, an in-depth study of the congestion situation, as well as a full road network analysis, would be extremely useful in comprehending the problem and proposing remedies.

Statement of the Problem

Most major cities across the world suffer from traffic congestion. Drivers and passengers in privately owned vehicles may lose significant time during a traffic bottleneck.

Despite extensive research and implementation of strategies to alleviate traffic congestion, the problem appears to be worsening on a daily basis. Based on this, the researcher want to explore or analyse the elements that contribute to traffic congestion along the Port Harcourt road corridor.

The objectives of the study

The study’s aims are:

To determine the problem caused by traffic congestion in Port Harcourt metropolitan.

To determine the reasons of traffic congestion in Port Harcourt metropolitan.

To determine the intra-urban traffic concerns in Portharcourt.

To propose a solution to intra-urban traffic concerns in Port Harcourt metropolitan.

Research Hypotheses

The researcher formulated the following research hypotheses:

H0: There are no problems caused by traffic congestion in Port Harcourt metropolis.

H1: There are problems caused by traffic congestion in Port Harcourt city.

H02: There is no answer to intra-urban traffic problems in Port Harcourt metropolitan.

H2: There is a solution to intraurban traffic difficulties in the Port Harcourt metropolis.

Significance of the Study

This report will be extremely important to students and policymakers. The study will provide a detailed picture of the intra-urban traffic challenges in Rivers state.

The study will make recommendations for long-term solutions to traffic congestion in Rivers state. The study will also serve as a resource for future academics working on the same problem.

Scope and limitations of the study

The study’s scope includes an analysis of intra-urban traffic problems in Rivers state, with a focus on the Port Harcourt metropolitan area. The researcher faces various constraints that limit the scope of the investigation;

a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The researcher has insufficient research material, which limits the investigation.

b) TIME: The study’s time frame does not allow for broader coverage because the researcher must balance other academic activities and examinations with the study.

c) FINANCE: There is insufficient funding to source for the materials, thereby limiting the investigation.

Definition of Terms

Intra-urban: (not comparable) Within a metropolitan setting. Mass transportation would benefit intraurban commuting more than interurban commuting.

Traffic on roads is made up of road users such as pedestrians, ridden or herded animals, vehicles, streetcars, buses, and other conveyances that travel on public roadways, either alone or in groups.
