ABSTRACT

Environmental factors play an essential influence in malaria transmission; thus, controlling these circumstances can help to lower disease burden. Environmental management approaches for disease control can be applied at the community level to supplement existing malaria control methods. This study evaluates existing knowledge and methods on mosquito ecology and environmental management for malaria control in a rural, agricultural region of Lagos, Nigeria. Household surveys were done with 408 randomly selected respondents from the Ifako Ijaiye local government region, while qualitative data were gathered through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that residents of Ifako Ijaiye are well aware of the linkages between mosquitos, the environment, and malaria. The majority of respondents claimed that cleaning the environment around the home, cutting vegetation around the home, or draining stagnant water can lower mosquito populations, with 63% reporting doing at least one of these strategies to protect oneself from malaria. Many respondents clearly believe that these environmental management practices are effective malaria control methods, but the true efficacy of these techniques for controlling vector populations or reducing malaria prevalence in the diverse ecological habitats of local government is unknown. More study should be done to determine the effects of various environmental management measures on mosquito populations and malaria transmission in this region, and greater participation in beneficial techniques should be encouraged.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

The great majority of malaria deaths occur in Africa, particularly south of the Sahara, where malaria also poses significant challenges to social and economic development.

Malaria is predicted to cost Africa about $12 billion in lost GDP each year, despite the fact that it could be controlled for a fraction of that amount.

Every year, at least 300 million acute cases of malaria occur worldwide, resulting in more than a million deaths. Approximately 90% of these deaths occur in Africa, primarily among young infants. Malaria is Africa’s biggest cause of under-five death (20%), accounting for 10% of the continent’s total illness burden.

It accounts for 40% of public health spending, 30-50% of in-patient admissions, and up to 50% of outpatient visits in areas with high malaria transmission rates. Malaria is responsible for more than 60% of outpatient visits in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African nations.

One of the most important ways for lowering malaria’s burden is to provide timely access to effective antimalarial treatments. Prompt access involves having treatment available as close to home as possible, so that it can be administered within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms.

Malaria is the primary cause of mortality among both adults and children in Tanzania, killing 100,000-125,000 people per year (CDC, 2005).

Environmental circumstances are crucial in malaria transmission because macro-environmental elements such as climatic conditions (temperature and rainfall), micro-environmental factors such as local topography, and human land use and management all have a significant impact on vector abundance.

Environmental management is an underutilised but potential vector control strategy that reduces mosquito breeding habitat by eliminating or changing stagnant or slow-moving water sources (Ault, 1994).

According to Pruss-Ustun and Corvalan (2006), environmental management might avert 42% of the malaria burden in sub-Saharan Africa.

Human activities significantly influence the transmission of infectious diseases, including malaria (Patz et al 2004; Sattenspiel 2000; Weiss & McMichael 2004).

Human-caused micro-environmental changes, such as the construction of irrigation systems and dams, have been proven to significantly increase mosquito populations by providing new breeding habitat (Ijumba et al. 2002; Mutero et al. 2004).

Malaria is thus a particularly serious problem in agricultural areas, where land use modifications attempted to improve crop yields frequently result in an increase in surface water.

Environmental management is an important component of malaria control because it may be used to regulate these micro-environmental factors, reducing the amount of slow-moving water in a region and making land less ideal for mosquito breeding.

This strategy has been effective in decreasing malaria burdens in a variety of ecological, socioeconomic, and epidemiological settings (Utzinger et al 2001).

Environmental management was first utilised on a broad scale in the early 1900s, fell out of favour in the 1940s with the introduction of DDT spraying, and was only reinstated for malaria in the 1980s (Ault 1994).

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate obesity and its repercussions among rural adults. The study specifically determined the level of obesity prevalence among rural adults, identified the factors that influence overweight and obesity among rural adults, identified the health risk factors associated with overweight and obesity among rural adults, and proposed strategies for preventing obesity among rural adults. The study used a survey descriptive research design. The survey generated 77 validated replies. The investigation followed the trait theories (Lay’s Theory). According to the data collected and assessed, the factors that influence overweight and obesity among rural adults include inherited, prenatal and early childhood influences, a bad diet, and insufficient physical activity. Furthermore, the study found that cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer are among the health risks associated with overweight and obesity among rural persons. The report advises stakeholders to develop policies that recognise and address the rising concerns of children overweight and obesity in Nigeria in general during this phase of Health Sector Reform.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Obesity is the most prevalent dietary problem in wealthy societies. Obesity is defined as an unusually high level of body fat (Edinburgh 1995).

It is described as aberrant adipose tissue growth induced by fat cell expansion (hypertrophic obesity), an increase in the number of fat cells (hyperplastic obesity), or both (Park 2004).

Excess fat builds due to an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. Obesity is extremely important since it is associated with higher morbidity and mortality rates. It increases the risk of major diseases and affects the efficiency and enjoyment of individuals affected.

Obesity is a chronic condition that affects both developed and developing countries, including children and adults. Obesity has become so widespread that it is displacing more traditional public health concerns, such as malnutrition (Park 2004). It’s become an international phenomenon.

Because there are no accurate data available and obesity definitions are not standardised, assessing the scale of the problem and comparing prevalence rates across nations is extremely difficult.

However, Stone and Saxon (2005) estimate that 10 to 20% of children and adolescents in developed nations are impacted.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Milk is described as the secretion of the mammary glands of female mammals. It is an unusually good source of protein, which has a significant biological significance in fostering child development (ihekorany and Ngoddy, 1985).

Milk is regarded as an exceptional food that is created by nature to be completely beneficial to very young mammals (fox and Cameron, 1980).

Milk has a diverse range of components, including the majority of food elements linked with bacterial nutrition. Milk is a high-nutritional food that contains spoilage germs. When milk leaves the udder of a healthy cow, it contains a few germs that originate in the milk ducts and cistern.

During the milking process, germs are typically injected from a variety of sources. The causes of hand milking are air, animal hair, dung, and milkers’ equipment such as pails, feed, and machines; most of these environmental elements are minor.

However, if the milking equipment is not well cleaned and sanitised, it can become a significant source of contamination (ihekoronye and Ngoddy, 1985).

After milk is drawn, it is quickly chilled to 45 degrees to prevent impurities from growing. Pasteurisation is a procedure used to remove germs from milk. This includes applying heat below the boiling point (Fraizer and Westhoff, 1978).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Mike, a high-nutritional meal, is strongly connected with microbes. As a result of this contamination, raw milk is not sterilised and is consumed directly or utilised in the making of milk products, causing sickness in humans and contributing to the spoiling of milk and dairy products.

1.3 Goals and Objectives of the Study

AIM: The study aims to examine the micro-flora of raw milk.
Objectives: The study’s aims are:

i) Isolate and identify microorganisms that contaminate raw milk.

ii) Determine whether the milk is tubercle bacilli-free.

iii) To detect the presence of coliforms as a pathogen index.

1.4 Hypothesis.

Ho: All fresh raw milk from healthy cows are free from microbial contamination, both pathogenic and nonpathogenic.
H1: Fresh raw milk from healthy cows is free of microbial contamination, both pathogenic and non-pathogenic.

1.5 Justification for the Study

Milk is known to be highly contaminated by bacteria if not handled properly. Therefore, there is a necessity to analyse consumption or processing for milk products.

1.6 Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to the bacterial species found in raw milk.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Despite Nigeria’s success in democratic, economic, and political reforms, the country’s prisons have yet to have a significant impact on the wellbeing of its inmates.

A recurring discussion among contemporary academic circles, criminologists, health professionals, and prison experts is how to create an adequate health template for proper prison management that reflects its goals.

Even if criminality and other vices must be discouraged, inmates’ health must be effectively cared for during and after imprisonment; thus, it is critical to be logical and rational in terms of health service while in custody.

Seven years into the new millennium, health for all prison inmates in Nigeria and other African countries remains a mirage. A recent study of African prison health systems paints a bleak picture of poor performance (Africa Regional Health Report, 2006).

The failure to offer excellent and fair access to prison health care services, due to a reliance on Western health care frameworks, has exacerbated existing health disparities in many African countries, particularly in Nigerian jails.

This arrangement also places the poor and the rich, urban and rural people, prisons and the “free” on opposite ends of the production spectrum of health care delivery in Nigeria.

When the health of certain groups, such as convicts, is evaluated critically, a clear illustration of this unfavourable equation emerges. Evidence has linked important determinants of health in modern communities to economical, political, and cultural issues, and hence health disparities have persisted across cultures, socioeconomic class, gender, and ethnicity (Bambra et al., 2005).

In the social sequence of events, prison convicts are typically from the lowest parts of society, and they face greater disparities in access to appropriate health care services. This experience exacerbates inmates’ pre-existing health problems (de Viggiani, 2007).

As a result, the current push to achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals demands a stronger push from the Nigerian government. Health is political, and control over it is part of a larger economic, social, and political system (Bambra1, et al., 2005).

Thus, achieving both qualitative and quantitative health among special populations, such as jail inmates, may be a long way off, given prison authorities’ and the government’s delayed approach to addressing prisoners’ health requirements.

As a result, this study aims to engage in a sociological discourse on jail health within the social framework that produces it. This was accomplished by examining jail health in Nigeria as a social product. The research goes on to provide a plausible approach for achieving optimal jail health in Nigeria.

Statement of the General Problem

The unsavoury character of Nigeria’s prison health care system leaves one in doubt, with too many questions and fewer solutions, as the majority of people become more prone to diseases and infections than they would have been if they had never been incarcerated and committed more heinous crimes.

Officers and men in Nigerian prisons have not taken detainees’ health seriously, and many are clearly dissatisfied with their health-care delivery conditions.

Surprisingly, prison remains essential in correcting, reforming, and rehabilitating “perceived convicts” in Nigeria. It is concerning that recommendations and ideas offered to the government on jail health changes have yet to be adopted.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The study’s primary goals are to analyse the health-care delivery system for inmates in Nigerian prisons. Other specific goals of the project include:

1. To investigate the health status of incarcerated inmates.

2. To analyse the environmental conditions of Nigerian prisons.

3. To measure the benefits of effective health care delivery in Nigerian prisons.

4. To investigate Nigerian jail improvements.

5. To investigate the obstacles of establishing an effective health-care delivery system for jail inmates.

6. To make recommendations for enhancing health-care services in Nigerian prisons.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What are the health conditions of Nigeria’s prison inmates?

2. What are the environmental conditions in Nigerian prisons?

3. What are the benefits of providing adequate health care in Nigerian prisons?

4. What are the Nigerian jail improvements that would enhance health-care delivery?

5. What are the barriers to establishing an effective health-care delivery system for prison inmates?

6. What are the strategies for enhancing health-care delivery in Nigeria’s prisons?

Research Hypothesis

H0: There are no barriers to a competent health-care system in Nigerian prisons.

H1: Nigerian prisons face difficulty in providing an adequate health care system.

Significance of the Study

The study will tremendously help the Nigerian prison service and the federal government by revealing the benefits of an effective health care system as well as the problems of implementing an effective health care system in Nigerian prisons throughout the country.

The study would also be extremely useful for students, researchers, and academics interested in conducting additional research on the issue.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focusses on the delivery of health treatment to inmates in Nigerian prisons, utilising Ado ekiti, Ekiti state as a case study.

Limitations of the Study

Financial constraints: Insufficient funds tend to restrict the researcher’s efficiency in accessing important resources, literature, or information, as well as in the process of data collecting (internet, questionnaire, and interview).

Time constraint: The researcher will conduct this investigation alongside other academic activities. This will reduce the amount of time spent on research.

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of pollution on the health of female manufacturing workers. Specifically, the study intended to identify the sources of pollutants in the selected workplaces and how they affect female workers. The study used survey descriptive methodology and had a total of 250 respondents. Chemical vapour and smoke, open-air burning of trash, exhaust from engines, oil and sewage, and solid waste were among the causes of pollution identified in the responses. Further research demonstrates that industry pollution influences the fertility of female manufacturing workers. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that pollution from the factory poses a significant foetal risk to female factory workers. As a result, at.000, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternate hypothesis was accepted, which asserts that pollution endangers female industrial workers’ fertility and foetal health. The report recommends that chemical producers show a product’s safety before it is sold or used. Also, companies and governments must accept responsibility for chemical substances in use, and a chemical compound should only be replaced with a safer material, not another dangerous one.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Pollution is defined as a large amount of anything in the wrong place. Some ancient toxins are beneficial when used in appropriate proportions. Phosphates and other plant supplements are essential for amphibian survival; yet, many of these supplements cause eutrophication.

Carbon dioxide in the environment helps keep the globe warm enough to be livable, but the release of large amounts of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel consumption and other sources is currently changing the planet’s climate.

Toxins such as dioxin and PCBs are so hazardous that even the most minor health problems, such as malignant growth and cognitive impairment, pose a threat.

Toxins are frequently released into the environment as a byproduct of some beneficial activity, such as producing energy or raising cows. Pollution of this nature is a form of rubbish disposal. It occurs when the financial costs of eliminating pollution outweigh the financial benefits, or at least the benefits to the polluter—a calculation that is often skewed in favour of pollution because the air and streams have been viewed as free removal destinations.

Toxin arrivals can also be intentional, as with pesticides, where biocidal compounds are delivered into the earth to reap financial rewards, or unintentional, as in oil slicks, where polluters suffer disaster.

Pollution is usually classified in numerous ways, including media, sources, types of toxins, and affects. Perhaps the most common pollution classifications focus on accepting media: air (emanations), water (effluents), and land (dumps and removals).

A little more current split would distinguish between inland and marine waters, surface and groundwater, troposphere and stratosphere, and perhaps we might now include space, considering the satellites and other flotsam and jetsam gathering out there.

The majority of pollution discussion and regulation revolves around these categories; however, concern is increasingly shifting to between media impacts, such as the fermentation of lakes and streams caused by air pollution or the removal of slimes and other residuals from air- and water-pollution control measures.

While open discussion typically focusses on industry, almost all aspects of modern life contribute to pollution, including families, horticulture and ranger service, and government, as well as industry and trade.

Our affluent families generate massive amounts of trash and other solid waste, as well as fluid sewage and debilitating pollutants from our vehicles and trucks.

Pollution caused by agriculture has recently received increased attention. According to some estimates, agribusiness is currently the most significant source of toxin loadings into streams and lakes.

Soil particles, compost, pesticides, animal waste, salts, and other chemicals that wash into streams from horticulture cost Nigerians millions of naira each year (Conservation Foundation 1987).

While responsibility for pollution is widespread, two human activities deserve special attention: our reliance on petroleum derivatives, the ignition of which produces carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur, heavy metals, and particulates; and our reliance on the chemical and metals industries, which are legitimately and indirectly linked to pollution from pesticides, engineered natural synthetics, manures, heavy metals, and Most pollutions are of concern because of their synthetic movement, whether they have harmful repercussions for living life forms or cause structural damage and metal consumption.

However, there are numerous types of non-compound pollution, which are notable primarily for their physical effects, such as radiation, both ionising and nonionising; warm pollution; infrared catching; clamour; water-borne and other microbes; sediment, garbage, and other strong squanders; and tasteful pollution, which includes scents and perceptibility impairment.

Pollution is widely thought to have an impact on the well-being of people, particularly industrial workers who spend the majority of their working lives inhaling and exhaling dangerous pollutants.

Women may face even worse conditions. Pollution causes a variety of serious medical problems, including cancer, lung disease, and other infections.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Worker health is critical for household income, productivity, and economic growth. This suggests that recovering and maintaining work capability is a critical role of health services. Heat, noise, dust, toxic chemicals, unsafe machinery, and psychological stress are all examples of health pollution that can induce occupational diseases and exacerbate existing ones.

This is dangerous for employees, particularly ladies with complex anatomical disorders. It is also acknowledged that employment conditions, job descriptions, and workplace hierarchy positions all have an impact on workers’ health.

The most prevalent occupational ailments caused by factory pollution include chronic respiratory diseases, musculoskeletal issues, noise-induced hearing loss, and skin problems. However, WHO (2018) reports that just one-third of nations have initiatives to address these concerns.

Pollution-related noncommunicable diseases (NCD), as well as cardiovascular disease and depression, all contribute to an increase in long-term illness and fatalities.

Pollution can induce noncommunicable diseases such as occupational cancer, chronic bronchitis, and asthma. Despite these disorders, most doctors and nurses are underprepared to cope with work-related health issues caused by pollution.

The World Health Organisation estimates that outdoor air pollution causes 4.2 million premature deaths in the general population, including workers, each year. In 2016, 91% of the world’s population resided in areas that did not meet WHO air quality criteria. The primary outdoor air pollutants are: (1) particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), (2) ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and (3) sulphur dioxide.

Indoor air pollution is also a serious concern, and occupational health and safety legislation and programs have historically addressed it. Pollution in industries is caused by technological processes, the combustion of materials and waste, cleaning, transportation vehicles and internal combustion engines, heating, and other factors.

Chemical substances and preparations, gases, fumes, and aerosols, particles, fibres, and so on are all examples of air pollutants found in industries. Pollution levels within companies might be far higher than outside.

According to the World Health Organisation, occupational exposure to some air pollutants in the workplace can result in more than 860,000 deaths per year. Against this backdrop, this study was designed to investigate the impact of pollution on the health of female manufacturing workers.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary purpose of this study is to look at the impact of pollution on the health of female manufacturing workers. Specifically, the project will investigate.

Various sources of factory pollution in the Matori Industrial Area.

Female factory workers are affected by various types of pollution.

Industries could take preventive measures to reduce the effects of factory pollution.

1.4 Research Questions.

What are the causes of factory pollution in the Matori Industrial Area?

What types of pollution-related effects have female manufacturing workers encountered?

What preventive actions may firms take to reduce the impact of manufacturing pollution on female workers?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

H0: Pollution poses no fertility or foetal risk to female factory workers.

Ha: Pollution poses a fertility and foetal risk to female factory workers.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The impact of pollution in factories cannot be overstated. This is why investing in safety is beneficial to any organisation that wishes to endure for an extended period of time while achieving its goals.

As a result, this study will shed light on the dangers that female industrial workers face, as well as educate them on how to avoid them.

It will also assist policymakers in reviewing production norms to protect worker safety, particularly among female workers.

Furthermore, this study will serve as a resource material for further studies on pollution and health risk suffered by factory workers.

On the whole, this study has provided some useful insights into industrial safety programmes/policies from workers‟ attitudinal dimension for greater understanding of attitudes, safe/unsafe behaviours, industrial safety practices, and the extent to which workers‟ attitudes and perception are associated with their culture towards preventing industrial accidents.

It has also added to the understanding of the implications of Nigerian cultural values on industrial safety and provided new knowledge for safety professionals in dealing with human errors that caused most of industrial accidents.

1.7 Delimitations of the study

The effect of Industrial pollution on workers health is a global problem; its alarming rate is high in developing countries than industrialized countries where adequate safety precautions are taken into consideration.

For this reason, this research does not covered all but rather focus attention on Nigeria and particularly Industrial Area of Matori, Lagos state.

Beside numerous reasons that produced physical accident at job, this research is mainly concentrated on workers industrial pollution for a healthy working environment.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Industrial safety is the administration of safety actions within a given industry with the goal of reducing risks and injuries in a specific occupational function.

An industrial accident is a distinct occurrence of unforeseen occurrences during industrial work that causes physical or mental harm.

Workers‟ attitude:- It is mental and neutral state of readiness of workers, organized through working experience that exert influence upon the individual worker‟s response to all objects and situations with which he is associated in working environment.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):- Personal protective equipment, generally referred to as “PPE”, is equipment worn to minimize exposure to a number of risks. PPE includes gloves, foot and eye protection, protective hearing equipment (earplugs, muffs), hard hats, respirators, and full body suits.

Safety Management System (SMS):- A SMS provides a methodical way to detect hazards and control risks while maintaining assurance that these risk controls are effective.

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) also usually referred to as Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a field concerned with the safety, health and welfare of persons involved in work or employment.

Abstract

This study examined the omicron form of Covid-19 in Nigeria, using the Lagos State Ministry of Health as a case study. To accomplish this, substantial research objectives were developed. This study used a survey design with simple random sampling procedures. The population consists of staff from the Lagos State Ministry of Health. When choosing the sample size, the researcher readily chose 56 respondents, of whom 55 were received and 50 validated. Data was collected using a self-constructed and verified questionnaire. The collected and validated surveys were examined using frequency tables and mean scores. The data show that Nigeria has a significant incidence of the omicron form of covid 19. The findings also revealed that the Omicron variant of covid-19 has a significant impact on economic activity in Nigeria, and measures implemented to combat the spread of the Omicron variant of covid-19 in Nigeria include travel bans, movement restrictions, strict quarantine laws, and compulsory vaccination. According to the findings, the study recommends deploying an effective PCR kit capable of detecting the new B.1.1.529 variant in all laboratories; deploying a fast testing kit at the entry point that can detect the new B.1.1529 variant for any suspected case; and implementing efficient contact tracing (using technology) for all incoming passengers into the country.

1.1 Background of the Study

The coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19), found in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, has rapidly spread to nearly every corner of the planet Lorfa (2020). The disorder is caused by Coronavirus 2, a unique and severe strain of coronavirus (sarscov-2)[1].

The coronavirus has caused not just disruptions in routine socioeconomic activities, but also sickness and mortality due to its high contagiousness.

Because there is no widely accepted pharmacological cure, other than the development of vaccinations, prophylactic measures that counsel against illnesses and limit sickness transmission may be the most effective form of prophylaxis [2].

Although vaccinations have been developed and given, the virus continues to mutate. According to the World Health Organization[4], there have been several variations of the virus, the most recent being the omicron variety.

On November 24, 2021, the World Health Organisation got information of a new strain of SARS-CoV-2, B.1.1.529 (WHO). This new variant was discovered in specimens collected in Botswana on November 11, 2021 and South Africa on November 14, 2021 [4].

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

According to Pelage et al. (1986), antibacterial activity is the ability to destroy or limit bacterial development. This is significant for the human body in terms of preventing sepsis and skin infections.

According to Derland (1981), medicated soap contains germicidal substances such as chloroxyhlenol, potassium mercuric iodide, trichlorocarbanlide, and so on, which enhances its antibacterial activity.

These germicide substances are typically put in a specific proportion, and the percentage of the ingredient used is always listed on the soapcase or within the lesflet, which contains instructions on how to use the soap for various reasons.

According to Anon (1964), soap is a chemical molecule formed by the interaction of fatty acids, oil, and caustic soda (alkali) that has the soap-like properties of detergents, including surface tension reduction, wetting and emulsifying ability, and gel formation. All fatty oils and fats.

Are mixes of glycoside molecules (erters) of trihydric alcohol, glycosides, and certain fatty acids such plasmatic acid. The chemistry of soap manufacture can be represented using the following equation, known as saponification (Anon (1964). HzCocoG5H31)3 + Na 0H Naoco15H31 (zH31+c3H5(oH)3) Palliation caustic sodium palurate glucose Soda.

According to Amon (1964), a bactericidal soap contains between 0.1 and 3% of the soap’s total weight. 0 to 10% by weight based on the total weight of the soap in a molecule with the formula R-Co-N1-CH2C00H CH3.

Here, R denotes an alkyl or alkenye group with 8 to carbon atoms. Antibacterial soap may contain 2,4,4,trichloro 2,2 hydroxydiphenyl in amounts ranging from 0.05 to 5% by weight, as well as at least one phosphorus oxyacid, per Johnson (1978). Phosphorus oxyacid salt phosphoric ester is represented by (R1)(oCH,CH2)R2.

R1 is an alkyl (8-20), whereas R2 is hydrogen or methyl (1-10). R1 belongs to the same group as R2 or H alkali metal, and n represents H or alkali metal. Such a soap has a wide spectrum of antibacterial activity and is highly resistant to discolouration when exposed to sunlight (Kaw,1981).

Another invention relates to an autimicrobial composition comprising of ammoniated zinc sulphate, optionally manufactured into adequate formulation and toilet bars.

Medicated soaps contain germicidal agents such as hexachlorophene, mercuric chloride, trichoran, and trichlorocarbaucide.

Sykes (1958) defined sterilisation as the total eradication of all living things. In medical terminology, it is frequently used in a narrow meaning to refer to the eradication of harmful organisms solely.

According to William (1979), a wound is defined as a disturbance of cellular and anatomic continuity, and healing is the restoration of continuity.

That biological process can only be accomplished through regeneration, cell proliferation, and collage production, which can be alleviated by washing the would surface, particularly with medicated soap, which, due to its combination of pherolic compounds, helps to keep organisms like Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at bay until a certain stage.

Wounds can also occur when the skin’s operational barrier is compromised by traumatic invasion, whether induced by trauma or overseas surgery.

The open area is prone to microbial invasion, and if a wound becomes infected, pus forms in the wounded area, resulting in wound abscess.

ABSTRACT

A pregnant mother and her developing baby interact in a variety of ways, from the food she eats to the baby’s kicks that she experiences. The developing baby’s diet has a significant impact on its health at delivery. To eat healthily, a pregnant mother must be familiar with the various components of food. However, if the knowledge is not applied, it loses its value. The primary goal of this research was to look into pregnant women’s nutritional knowledge and practices in Anambra State’s Onitsha North and South Local Government Areas. Because of the high number involved and the fact that the majority of the hospital lacked a maternity unit, only 250 expectant moms were used. The study was designed with eight precise objectives, matching research questions, and six hypotheses. Data was collected using a questionnaire with three sections. The respondents’ personal information was collected through fourteen questions on dietary knowledge and practice. The questionnaire responses on knowledge were on a two-point scale of Yes and No, whilst those on practices were on a three-point scale of “Practice Always”. “Do not practice” coupled with “Practice Rarely” . Correlation analysis, percentage, ANOVA, and multiple t-tests for paired comparisons were used to analyse the data. The results revealed that all of the study’s hypotheses had been rejected. The mean (x) percentage of individuals who said they knew what healthy nutrition was was higher than those who said they practiced it often. There was some link between the subjects’ nutritional knowledge and their nutritional practice. Education, age, and parity all influenced their nutritional understanding and practices. Based on these findings, some recommendations were made, including: – (a) Health educators and nutritionists should be asked to deliver health talks to pregnant women during prenatal clinics. (b) Age and educational level.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Nutritional knowledge has been shown to have a critical role in implementing optimal nutrition habits for the health of every pregnant mother. In reality, a nation’s health and nutritional quality are crucial indicators of its progress. A nutrition survey conducted in India discovered that pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as newborns, do not get adequate nourishment.

This is most likely due to a lack of fundamental understanding about healthy nutrition and incorrect customs in the community, as well as a lack of food availability and consumption.

In Nigeria, various detrimental socio-cultural and economic variables have had a negative impact on women’s access to quality antenatal care, which is required to lower maternal morbidity and mortality rates.

The most important of these are women’s low socioeconomic status, which denies them access to appreciable decision-making with regard to their reproductive functions;

A high level of female illiteracy, which is a leading cause of poor health seeking behaviour for maternity services among Nigerian women; and a high rate of poverty, which predominantly affects women, leading to inadequate dietary intakes, a high rate of pregnancy complications, and women’s reduced access to evidence.

Maternal nutrition before and during pregnancy is a significant predictor of birth weight. The high rate of low birth weight (LBW) in impoverished nations has been ascribed to inadequate maternal nutrition (Ogunjuyigbe et al., 2008).

Pregnancy is a time of significant physiological change, necessitating optimal nutritional lifestyle choices. The growing baby requires a lot of energy and nutrients from the mother to improve physical and psychological development (Ojo and Briggs, 2010).

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Small and medium scale enterprises has been a focal point of the various governments of the world, because SMEs have flexible configurations and immensely contributed to nation building respectively (Aderemi et al. 2019) . Generally, the World Bank classed SMEs as enterprises with maximum of 300 people.

Meanwhile, in Nigeria`s setting, small and medium scale firms are regarded as business entities that have less than 50 employees. Basically, these firms contain investment in machinery and equipment that is less or equivalent to six hundred thousand naira and independently owned and controlled with a view to producing work opportunities and satisfying sales standard (CBN, 2018).

National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)estimated numbers of SMEs in Nigeria to be 41.4 million. The distinctive nature of SMEs resides in the usage of raw materials from local sources, creation of employment, incentive for rural development, entrepreneurship development, mobilization of local savings and platform for self-employment.

However, terrible impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on both human and material resources in early 2020 cannot be ignored in a hurry. The Wuhan-COVID-19 arose in 2019 in China like the way Ebola did in West Africa in 2014. But, COVID-19 turned into worldwide pandemic- which spread across the globe without obstruction (WHO, 2020).

This unique virus triggered off different limitations to movement of people, goods and services. The closure of factories businesses alongside reduction in production of good and services was not left out due to the stay-indoors orders invariably reverberated its effect to activities of SMEs globally however after the lockdown with not all the SME’s functioning, the ordeal was how to ensure the rate of Covid-19 spread is drastically reduced.

This is only achievable when SME owners and patronizers comply to the stipulated safety guidelines. Evidence from Worldometre 2020 indicate that asymptomatic infection and transmission of COVID-19 is possible.

Asymptomatic infection occurs when an individual is infected but experiences no symptoms, while asymptomatic transmission occurs when an infected individual without symptoms transmits the virus to another person.

These evidences imply that in countries like Nigeria, where the capacity to conduct mass testing is lacking and contact tracing is not very effective, asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic cases act as silent spreaders and this underlines the importance of social distancing, regular hand washing and good hygiene, and mask wearing to be practiced primarily among the general public especially owners and patronizers of SMEs.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Small and medium-sized businesses, such as supermarkets, hotels, fast food restaurants, and manufacturing sectors, are just as vulnerable to COVID-19 as other public spaces that are frequented by a lot of people who interact with staff and one another. These are places where visitors stay in close quarters for a short time and where there is a lot of interaction between patrons and employees.

These important concerns are not limited to cafeterias, restaurants, and supermarkets. Actually, businesses that provide goods and services that need special care for their clients and customers must make sure that all employees and clients adhere to the WHO’s basic COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

In addition to implementing stringent visitor/customer policies, SMEs must closely adhere to their staff health, hygienic practices, and proper usage of personal protective equipment while on the job.

Coronavirus can be stopped from spreading by cleaning and disinfecting high-touch and frequent areas with approved chemicals and sanitisers at predetermined intervals, as well as by using social distance and staff optimisation during shifts. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to ascertain how well Nigerian SMEs adhere to COVID-19 safety regulations.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The overall goal of this study is to evaluate the degree of COVID-19 safety compliance among Nigerian SMEs. In particular, this research aims to:

Examine the many COVID-19 safety protocols that Nigerian SMEs adhere to.

2. Examine if the owners of SMEs are strict at adhering to the covid-19 safety standards in Nigeria.

3. To determine the extent of covid-19 safety compliance among SMEs in Nigeria.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What are the various COVID-19 safety precautions that Nigerian SMEs adhere to?

2. Do Nigerian SMEs’ owners strictly follow the COVID-19 safety guidelines?

3. To what degree do employees and clients in Nigerian SMEs adhere to COVID-19 safety regulations?

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study would heighten the degree of awareness of SME’s owners and staff on the necessity to comply to the covid-19 safety measures as they are at a high risk exposure to the diseases when offering commercial services and product.

It will compel chief executive officers, managing director, and business owners on the requirement to guarantee they put up facilities and equipment that would permit the efficient compliance to this Covid-19 safety measures withing their business premises or factories.

It will allow the government to make sure that relevant agencies, such as the Covid-19 task force, regularly inspect small and medium-sized businesses to maintain a high level of compliance, which will slow the development of this new disease. As a result, the study will also act as a guide for scholars looking to advance their research in this field.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study would use Kilimanjaro Fast Food and Pick Payless Supermarket in Port Hacourt, Rivers State, as a case study to evaluate the degree of COVID-19 safety compliance among SMEs in Nigeria.

1.7 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0: SMEs have a poor degree of COVID-19 safety compliance.

H1: SMEs have a high degree of COVID-19 safety compliance.

1.8 THE LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The following are just a few of the difficulties that were faced during the course of the investigation. These are:

Insufficient funding was a barrier for the study, making it difficult for the researcher to visit Access Banks in Lagos, particularly when it came to printing and compiling the questionnaires.

Time is another limitation because it was necessary to manage this research while juggling other academic obligations, which prevented this study from being conducted in a larger, more representative sample.

1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS

COVID-19: The condition known as COVID-19 is brought on by a new coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

SMEs: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are non-subsidiary, independent firms which employ fewer than a given number of employees.

SAFETY: the situation of being free and protected from risk or something that is harmful

COMPLIANCE: compliance is complying to stipulated rules, standards, processes, policies and laws
