Key Takeaways

Chapter 1 is the critical foundation of your entire research project, introducing your topic, problem, and research direction

It must contain nine essential components: introduction, background, problem statement, objectives, research questions, significance, scope and limitations, assumptions, and operational definitions

These components must work together coherently, with each section building on the previous one

Writing Chapter 1 requires strategic planning, clear writing, and ensuring all elements align with each other

Professional guidance from experienced researchers can dramatically improve your Chapter 1 quality and save you weeks of revision

Understanding Chapter 1 in Research

If you’re struggling to write Chapter 1 of your research project, you’re not alone. This is where most students and researchers get stuck because Chapter 1 sets the tone for everything that follows. The problem is that many students approach it as just another chapter to complete, not realizing that Chapter 1 determines whether your reader (and your evaluator) understands why your research matters.

Chapter 1 is fundamentally different from every other chapter in your research project. While Chapter 2 reviews existing literature, Chapter 3 explains your methods, and Chapter 4 presents your findings, Chapter 1 must accomplish something far more complex: it must hook your reader, establish the context for your study, identify a genuine problem worth investigating, and lay out exactly what you plan to do about it. As research methodologist John W. Creswell noted, “The introduction is the most important part of your research paper because it provides the context and purpose for the entire study.”

Here’s where many students struggle: They write Chapter 1 without understanding how each section connects to the others. They jump from background to objectives without clearly showing why those objectives matter. They define their problem without clearly stating who is affected or what happens if the problem goes unaddressed. The result is a disjointed, confusing introduction that leaves readers wondering about the purpose of the research.

This is exactly where PremiumResearchers can help you. Our team of experienced academic writers specializes in crafting compelling Chapter 1 sections that establish clear research direction and pass rigorous academic standards. We understand the specific requirements of Nigerian universities (UNILAG, OAU, University of Ibadan, and others) and international academic standards. Rather than struggle through multiple revisions, many students choose to work with us to get it right from the start. We can provide you with personalized Chapter 1 samples for your specific research topic, showing you exactly how to structure each component and how they connect together.

The Nine Essential Components of Chapter 1

Every well-constructed Chapter 1 contains nine specific components, each serving a distinct function in your research narrative. Think of these as the building blocks that, when properly arranged, create a compelling case for why your research needs to be done.

Here are the nine components in logical order:

Introduction

Background of the Study

Statement of the Problem

Research Objectives

Research Questions and/or Hypotheses

Significance of the Study

Scope and Limitations

Basic Assumptions

Operational Definition of Terms

The key to effective Chapter 1 writing is understanding that these components aren’t isolated sections that stand alone. Instead, they form an interconnected system where each component builds on and supports the others. Your background sets up your problem statement. Your problem statement justifies your research objectives. Your objectives generate your research questions. Your research questions require specific methods (which you’ll detail in Chapter 3). Your significance section explains why anyone should care about answering those questions.

Most students who struggle with Chapter 1 are writing these components in isolation, then wondering why they don’t fit together. This is a structural problem that requires strategic thinking before you start writing.

Crafting a Compelling Introduction

Your introduction section is your first and best opportunity to capture your reader’s attention. Think of it as the gateway to your entire research project. If it fails to engage the reader or fails to establish clear direction, everything that follows will struggle to resonate.

An effective introduction uses what’s called the “funnel approach” – you begin with a broad, general statement about your field or topic, then gradually narrow your focus until you arrive at your specific research focus. This approach accomplishes several things simultaneously: it provides necessary context, it shows how your research fits into the larger academic conversation, and it demonstrates that you understand the significance of your topic.

Here’s a strong example:

The digital revolution has fundamentally transformed how people communicate, learn, and work. Social media platforms have become integral to daily life, with over 5.3 billion users globally as of 2024. Among these users, university students represent one of the most active demographics, spending 3-5 hours daily on social platforms. While these platforms offer unprecedented opportunities for knowledge sharing and collaboration, their relationship with academic performance remains poorly understood in the Nigerian higher education context. Previous research conducted in Western settings may not fully apply to Nigerian students, who face different digital access patterns, learning environments, and cultural factors. This gap in context-specific research represents a significant opportunity to advance our understanding of how digital engagement affects student learning outcomes.

Notice how this introduction moves from a general observation (digital transformation), to a specific statistic (5.3 billion users), to a specific population (university students), to an acknowledged gap (lack of Nigerian context), to why that gap matters (different contexts require different understanding). This is the funnel structure working effectively.

Key elements of a strong introduction:

Opens with a compelling statement that captures attention

Provides necessary background information without overwhelming the reader

Uses specific statistics or recent developments to establish relevance

Identifies where your study fits into the larger research conversation

Transitions smoothly into the specific focus of your research

Signals what the reader can expect in the sections that follow

Writing Your Background Section

The background section is where you tell the story of your research problem. It’s not a literature review (that comes in Chapter 2), but rather a narrative that explains how your research question emerged and why it matters now.

A strong background section typically covers four key areas:

Historical development: How has this issue evolved over time? What triggered interest in this area?

Current state of knowledge: What do we currently understand about this topic?

Gaps in existing research: What specifically do we NOT know?

Contextual factors: What factors specific to your context (Nigeria, your institution, your field) make this research timely and relevant?

Here’s a strong example from a study on remote learning:

Distance education has a long history extending back to 19th-century correspondence courses, but technological advancement accelerated its adoption significantly. The emergence of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in the early 2000s demonstrated online learning’s scalability. However, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 created an unprecedented shift to remote learning that forced institutions to transition overnight, often without adequate preparation.

Existing research on voluntary online learning (Ahmed, 2022; Johnson, 2023) provides insights into student motivation and engagement. However, these studies focused on students who chose online learning. The literature reveals a significant gap regarding students forced into remote learning situations, particularly concerning their psychological adjustment, sense of belonging, and long-term academic outcomes. This gap is especially pronounced for African students, where most research has been conducted in Western contexts.

In the Nigerian higher education setting, where many institutions lack robust digital infrastructure and students come from varying digital literacy backgrounds, the specific challenges of forced remote learning remain under-researched. This study addresses that gap by examining the psychological and academic impacts of forced remote learning on undergraduates at major Nigerian universities.

This background section accomplishes several things: it establishes historical context, acknowledges what we know from existing research, explicitly identifies the research gap, and explains why this gap matters specifically in the Nigerian context.

Developing a Strong Problem Statement

This is where your entire research project hinges. Your problem statement must be crystal clear because everything else in your research flows from this foundation. The problem statement answers the fundamental question: “What is the research problem, and why does it matter?”

Many students write vague problem statements like “This study examines social media’s impact on student performance.” This is far too broad and doesn’t clearly identify what specific problem needs to be solved.

A strong problem statement should:

Clearly identify the specific problem (not just a general topic)

Explain why it matters and to whom it matters

Indicate who is affected by this problem

Suggest potential consequences if the problem remains unaddressed

Be specific enough to guide your research methodology

Weak Problem Statement: “Social media affects student academic performance.”

Strong Problem Statement: “While social media is ubiquitous among Nigerian university students, research has not adequately examined how specific usage patterns (time spent, platform choice, timing of use) relate to academic performance outcomes, particularly in the context of competing demands from hybrid learning environments. This gap in understanding creates challenges for educational institutions attempting to help students maintain healthy digital habits while optimizing their use of technology for learning.”

The strong version specifically identifies: what we don’t understand (relationship between specific usage patterns and performance), the population (Nigerian university students), the context (hybrid learning environments), and why it matters (institutions need this information to support students).

Setting Clear Research Objectives

Research objectives translate your problem statement into specific, achievable goals. They answer the question: “What exactly will this research accomplish?”

Effective objectives are specific, measurable, and aligned with your problem statement. They should be written in clear, active language using strong action verbs.

Here’s how to structure effective research objectives:

General Objective (singular, overarching goal):

To assess the relationship between social media usage patterns and academic performance among undergraduate students at major Nigerian universities.

Specific Objectives (multiple, measurable goals):

To quantify the average daily time spent on social media by undergraduate students and identify primary platforms used.

To identify the specific usage patterns (passive scrolling vs. active learning engagement) most prevalent among students.

To measure the correlation between identified usage patterns and cumulative GPA, course completion rates, and student-reported academic satisfaction.

To explore students’ perspectives on how social media affects their concentration, motivation, and academic engagement.

To develop context-specific recommendations for students and institutions regarding healthy social media use in academic settings.

Notice that each specific objective uses action verbs (quantify, identify, measure, explore, develop) and is specific enough that you could create a research method to accomplish it. Avoid vague objectives that use weak verbs like “understand,” “know,” or “examine.”

Formulating Research Questions and Hypotheses

Your research questions are the concrete inquiries that will guide your data collection and analysis. They represent the translation of your objectives into specific questions that your research will answer. If your objectives describe what you’ll accomplish, your research questions describe what you’ll investigate.

Research questions are particularly important because they directly determine your research methodology. A question asking “what is the prevalence of X?” suggests quantitative methods. A question asking “how do students experience Y?” suggests qualitative methods.

Structure your research questions this way:

Primary Research Question:

To what extent do specific social media usage patterns correlate with academic performance outcomes among undergraduate students at Nigerian universities?

Secondary Research Questions:

What are the predominant social media usage patterns among undergraduates, and how do these vary by gender, discipline of study, and level of education?

Which usage patterns show the strongest correlation with academic performance indicators (GPA, course completion, academic satisfaction)?

How do students themselves perceive the relationship between their social media use and academic outcomes?

What factors enable students to maintain balanced social media use while meeting academic demands?

If your research is quantitative, add hypotheses:

H1: Students spending more than 4 hours daily on social media will have significantly lower cumulative GPAs than those spending less than 2 hours daily.

H2: Passive scrolling and entertainment-focused social media use will be negatively associated with academic performance, while learning-focused use will show positive associations.

H3: Students who use social media during designated study times will report lower academic satisfaction than those who maintain temporal boundaries.

Each hypothesis is testable, specific, and directly addresses one of your research questions.

Establishing the Significance of Your Study

The significance section answers the crucial “So what?” question. It explains why your research matters and who will benefit from your findings. This section must justify the time and resources your research requires.

Structure your significance section to address multiple stakeholder groups:

For Students: How will your findings help students make better decisions about their social media use? Will your research provide concrete strategies they can implement?

For Educators and Institutions: How will your findings help institutions support student success? What institutional policies or programs could be informed by your research?

For the Academic Field: What gap in the literature does your research address? What new understanding will it contribute?

For Society/Policy: Do your findings have implications for broader discussions about digital wellbeing, educational policy, or social change?

This study has significance for multiple stakeholders. For students, it provides data-driven insights into how their social media habits affect academic success, enabling more informed decisions about technology use. For educators and university administrators, it offers evidence-based understanding of digital engagement patterns, informing the design of student support programs and academic policies. The research addresses a notable gap in the literature by providing context-specific evidence from Nigerian universities, where digital divides, infrastructure challenges, and cultural factors create a distinct landscape from Western research contexts.

Methodologically, this mixed-methods approach contributes a replicable framework for examining technology-learning relationships in African educational settings. Policy implications extend to national discussions about digital literacy in higher education and the development of technology integration guidelines that account for local context and student wellbeing.

Defining Scope and Limitations

Many students view the scope and limitations section as something to minimize or downplay. Actually, the opposite is true. Clearly defining your boundaries demonstrates research sophistication and intellectual honesty. It shows that you understand your research context and have made deliberate choices about what to study and what to exclude.

Your scope describes what your research WILL address:

This research focuses specifically on undergraduate students (200-level to 400-level) enrolled full-time at three major universities in Lagos State during the 2024-2025 academic year. The study examines five primary social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok, and WhatsApp) where undergraduate students demonstrate significant engagement. The research is limited to students with consistent internet access and does not include distance learning students or those with irregular digital access. Data collection covers a 4-month period during the regular academic semester.

Your limitations describe constraints and potential weaknesses:

Geographic limitation to Lagos State may not represent students in other regions with different infrastructure, economic, or cultural contexts.

Self-reported data on social media usage may be subject to recall bias or social desirability bias.

The 4-month study period may not capture longer-term impacts or seasonal variations in academic performance.

The study cannot establish causation, only correlation, therefore we cannot definitively state that social media use causes lower academic performance.

Institutional differences among the three universities may affect generalizability of findings.

By clearly stating limitations, you demonstrate that you’ve thought critically about your research design and understand where your conclusions apply and where they don’t. This actually enhances your credibility rather than undermining it.

Identifying Assumptions and Operational Definitions

Every research project rests on underlying assumptions – things you take to be true for your research to be valid. Making these explicit is a mark of research rigor.

Theoretical Assumptions:

Students can accurately self-report their social media usage patterns.

Academic performance (GPA) is an adequate measure of learning outcomes.

The relationship between social media use and academic performance is similar across different disciplinary contexts.

Methodological Assumptions:

The survey instrument used is valid and reliable for measuring social media usage in Nigerian contexts.

Participants will provide honest responses about their social media habits.

A 4-month academic semester adequately captures students’ normal patterns of engagement.

Operational Definitions ensure clarity and consistency:

Social Media Usage: The time spent and activities engaged in on social platforms (active posting, passive scrolling, communication, entertainment consumption) measured in hours per day and categorized by platform and activity type.

Academic Performance: Measured by cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale, course completion rates, and self-reported academic satisfaction ratings on a Likert scale.

Undergraduate Student: A full-time student enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs at participating institutions, in their second through fourth years of study.

Passive Usage: Social media engagement focused on consuming others’ content without active participation (scrolling feeds, watching videos, viewing stories).

Active Usage: Social media engagement involving creation or meaningful participation (posting content, commenting, messaging, collaborative projects).

These operational definitions are crucial because they ensure that when someone reads your research, they understand exactly what you mean by the terms you’re using. “Social media usage” could mean many different things – by defining it operationally, you eliminate ambiguity.

Common Mistakes Students Make in Chapter 1 (and How to Avoid Them)

After reviewing hundreds of research projects, we’ve identified the most common mistakes that weak Chapter 1 sections share. Being aware of these pitfalls can help you avoid them.

Mistake 1: Scope Creep

The Problem: You try to address everything related to your topic rather than narrowing down to a specific, manageable research question.

Weak Example: “This study examines all aspects of how technology affects student learning, including social media, email, learning management systems, online educational resources, and general computer use.”

Better Example: “This study examines how daily social media usage patterns specifically relate to academic performance in undergraduate students at Nigerian universities, with focus on the most-used platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X).”

The key difference: the better example is narrower, more specific, and therefore more achievable within the constraints of a research project.

Mistake 2: Misaligned Components

The Problem: Your research objectives don’t actually address your problem statement. Your research questions don’t align with your objectives. Your methodology (in Chapter 3) won’t actually answer your research questions.

Example of Misalignment:

Problem Statement: “Undergraduate students’ social media use correlates with academic performance, but we don’t understand which specific usage patterns are problematic.”

Research Objective: “To understand students’ attitudes toward technology in general.”

These don’t align. If your problem is about specific usage patterns and academic performance, your objective should address that relationship, not general attitudes toward technology.

Mistake 3: Weak Opening

The Problem: Your introduction fails to capture attention or establish relevance.

Weak Opening: “This study is about social media and students.”

Strong Opening: “According to recent research, undergraduate students spend an average of 4-5 hours daily on social media platforms, yet many report struggling to balance this engagement with academic demands. Despite decades of research on technology and learning, we still lack context-specific understanding of how students in African universities manage digital engagement while maintaining academic focus.”

The strong opening provides specific information, establishes relevance (the tension between social media engagement and academics), and clearly identifies what we still need to understand.

Mistake 4: Insufficient Justification

The Problem: You don’t adequately explain why your research matters or who will benefit from it.

Weak Significance Section: “Understanding social media’s impact on academic performance is important.”

Strong Significance Section: “Understanding which social media usage patterns most negatively affect academic performance will enable universities to develop targeted interventions. For students, this research provides actionable insights into how to manage digital engagement without sacrificing academic success. For policy makers, this research provides evidence for digital literacy and wellbeing initiatives. For African higher education institutions specifically, this research addresses a gap in literature where most existing research reflects Western contexts and may not account for Africa’s unique digital access patterns, infrastructure challenges, and cultural approaches to technology.”

The strong version explains specifically who benefits (universities, students, policy makers, African institutions) and what they’ll be able to do with the findings.

Mistake 5: Vague Language

The Problem: You use imprecise language that doesn’t clearly convey your meaning.

Vague: “The effects of social media on students are significant.”

Specific: “Undergraduate students who spend more than 4 hours daily on social media report 0.5 points lower cumulative GPAs on average compared to those spending less than 2 hours daily, according to preliminary institution data.”

The specific version provides concrete information that actually helps readers understand what you’re claiming.

A Strategic Approach to Writing Chapter 1

Don’t write Chapter 1 in section order. Instead, follow this process:

Start with your problem statement. This is the anchor. Everything else should flow from this core idea.

Develop research questions that directly address this problem. If your question doesn’t relate to your problem, revise one or the other.

Create objectives that align with your questions. Each objective should help answer at least one research question.

Write your background section to show how your problem emerged and why it matters.

Write your introduction to funnel readers from general context down to your specific focus.

Develop your significance section to explain why anyone should care.

Define your scope and limitations to show realistic boundaries.

List your assumptions and define your key terms.

Finally, review and revise to ensure all sections align.

The mistake most students make is starting at section 1 (introduction) and working sequentially through to section 9. This means you’re writing your introduction before you’ve fully clarified your problem, objectives, and questions – which makes alignment nearly impossible.

This is another area where working with PremiumResearchers can save you considerable time. Our experienced writers follow this strategic approach, ensuring that all nine components align perfectly and support each other. We can also provide detailed feedback on your draft Chapter 1, pointing out where components aren’t aligned and suggesting specific revisions to strengthen them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chapter 1

How long should Chapter 1 be?

Chapter 1 typically ranges from 10-15 pages for a master’s thesis to 20-30 pages for a doctoral dissertation, depending on your institution’s requirements. The key is comprehensiveness, not length – you should thoroughly cover all nine components without unnecessary repetition or filler. A well-written 12-page Chapter 1 is better than a poorly-written 25-page version. Focus on quality and clarity over hitting a specific page count.

What if my research objectives don’t perfectly align with my research questions?

This is a common problem, and the solution is revision. Your research questions should emerge directly from your objectives. If you have a research objective like “To identify barriers to digital adoption among older adults,” your research questions should ask specific questions about those barriers. For example, “What are the primary barriers to digital adoption among adults over 65?” If your questions don’t connect to your objectives, something needs to be revised. This is why many students benefit from professional feedback during Chapter 1 development – we can identify misalignments immediately and help you fix them.

THE EFFECT OF TWITTER SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study describes how Twitter and other social networking sites impact secondary school students’ behaviour at Essence International Schools in Kaduna.

Twitter is the specific subject of the study, which focusses on social networking sites in general. Questionnaires are used as a survey instrument with random sample techniques, while interviews are used as a methodology to gather data.

The social networking platform Twitter has a significant influence on secondary school pupils’ behaviour from both positive and bad perspectives. While interacting with others is an important part of social networking, the majority of social networking sites are accessible to everyone.

Teenagers are drawn to social networking sites in part because they are only available to them. The majority of users on these social networking sites are high school and college students, making them a relatively recent phenomenon.

Introduction to Chapter One

1.1 Background of the Study

According to Wikipedia (2011), the internet is a global network of linked computers that serves billions of people globally via the standard internet protocol suite (TCPT/IP).

Millions of computer networks from the public, private, academic, commercial, and governmental sectors are connected via a wide range of electronic and optical networking technologies, according to Castells (1996).

The internet is a global network of computers and computer networks that enables users to share and exchange information, according to Castells (2001).

According to Wikipedia (2011), the internet provides a wide range of information resources and services that support conventional communication mediums like the phone and films. The internet has also redefined these media, giving rise to new services like voice over internet protocol (VOIP).

Newspapers, books, and other print media are either changing to accommodate website technology or becoming blogs and web feeds, according to Wikipedia (2011). Through social networking, internet for a person, and instant messaging, the internet has facilitated or expedited new kinds of human relationships. Com/essays/2003; oppapers.

Cheong and Morrison (2008) assert that the internet is providing more freedom in terms of working hours and places, particularly with regard to web applications and speed connections.

Additionally, there are now many ways to access the internet practically anywhere, particularly through mobile devices, phones, data cards, handheld game consoles, and cellular routers, which enable users to connect to the internet from any location with a network that supports their technology (Goldsborough, 2009).

According to Castells (2001), internet services like web and email may be accessible within the constraints imposed by small screens and other limited features of such pocket-sized devices. Compared to other access methods, wireless data transmission fees and services may be substantially more.

In the twenty-first century, the internet is quickly taking over as the primary medium for trade and communication. It is also having a significant impact on the global economic system and altering communication globally.

McLuhan (1964) asserts that globalisation has permanently altered our world, making it more interconnected than ever before. According to McLuhan [1964], the internet is arguably the most well-known instrument that has made interconnection possible. Social networks have emerged as a result of the internet’s ability to reduce communication distances across time and location.

According to a survey (Goldsborough, 2008), social network utilisation is on the rise. This rise is seen as yet another significant development in the history of information worldwide. The majority of white-collar workers now use social networks, but students were primarily thought to be the first group to use them (Kim, 2008).

According to Wikipedia (2011), the internet’s fundamental characteristics, like its accessibility and wide-ranging use, have made it possible for completely new kinds of social engagement, activities, and communication.

Numerous social networking sites have developed new ways for people to engage and socialise, including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, HI5, Nimbus, 2go, Blackberry chart (Bbchart), Xanga, Yahoo, and Bebo.

However, the internet has gained new significance as a political instrument, which has led to internet restriction by certain regimes (Rehmeyer, 2007). Although this is uncommon, Howard Dean’s 2004 U.S. presidential campaign stood out for its effectiveness in raising money online.Rehmeyer (2007)

Over the past few years, social networking sites have grown quickly, opening up new and diverse online communication channels for both mobile phones and desktop computers. Nowadays, a large number of people use social networking services.

According to Cooke and Buckley (2008), marketing strategies of the future will be conducted online. Additionally, Cheong and Morrison (2008) clarify that as digital media usage increases and technology evolves, advertisers are looking for new ways to connect with customers.

Social media advertising costs advertisers more than N304, 000,000,000,000 billion (Marketer, 2009). Advertisers may be spending nearly #532,8064 12291382 trillion ($3.5b), according to predictions.

Wikipedia (2011) states that a social network site is a group of people (or organisations) who are linked by one or more particular forms of interdependency, like friendship, kinship, a shared interest in money, or connections based on shared values, knowledge, or status.

However, for more than a century, people have used the term “social network” in a broad sense to refer to intricate webs of relationships between members of social systems at all dimensions, from interpersonal to global, according to Simmels (2001). The utility of a social network to its members is influenced by its nature.

In terms of users worldwide, Twitter, the study’s focus, is one of the social networks with the quickest rate of growth.

Twitter is an online social networking service that allows users to send and receive “tweets,” which are text-based entries of up to 140 characters, according to Shields and Maggie (2011). Jack Dorsey founded Twitter in 2006, and it was made public in July of the same year (Twitter search team, 2011).

Additionally, according to Wikipedia (2011), Twitter quickly became well-known throughout the world, with 200 million users as of 2011, 200 million tweets, and more than 1.6 billion search queries processed daily.

With offices and servers in Boston, New York, San Antonio, Texas, and San Francisco, California, Twitter Inc. is the corporation that runs the service and related website (Twitter.com, 2010).

Twitter’s popularity peaked during the 2007 South by South West festival in San Francisco, when the number of tweets per day jumped from 20,000 to 60,000, according to the Twitter blog (2010).

In 2007, the company grew quickly, posting 400,000 tweets every quarter, according to compete.com (2010). In 2008, this increased to 100 million tweets every quarter. According to Johnson (2009), 50 million tweets were sent daily by Twitter users in February 2010. The startup reported 750 tweets per second by March 2010.

But according to Johnson (2009), Twitter’s fundamental workings are “remarkably simple.” He went on to say that Twitter is a social network that is centred on its users.

According to a recent survey by Evan (2010), Twitter is one of the most widely used social networking sites in the US, with 13% of Americans using it.

In many respects, people of all ages can always find a social network on this site (Twitter). As a social network, Twitter contributes to global communication by offering online tools for information sharing and establishing connections with users through the creation of profiles that may contain blogs and personal websites.

Rosen (2010) has proposed that Twitter influences behaviour by developing psychiatric disorders through addiction to the social network. Because Twitter is a public network, it also influences behaviour.

Accordingly, the focus of this study is on how social media, specifically Twitter, affects secondary school students’ behaviour, specifically at international secondary school in Kaduna.

Thus, the purpose of this study is to determine how the social media platform Twitter is influencing the behaviour of secondary school pupils at Essence International Secondary School in Kaduna.

Brief History of the Essence International Secondary School

Established in 1982, Essence International Secondary School started out as a nursery school before growing over time to accommodate all classes up until the last year of secondary school.

Essence International School is situated in Kaduna, a stunning and vibrant city in Northern Nigeria, on a peaceful section of Kashir Ibrahim Road. The four-tiered school provides pre-nursery, nursery, primary, and secondary students with high-quality instruction in an engaging learning environment.

The African traditional village where the play is set is the most recent addition to Essence. both the village and the bilingual elementary school, where pupils are taught both French and English. Additionally, they have an improved curriculum that emphasises African geography, history, and culture.

www.Essenceschool.com is the source.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Many of the students at Essence International Secondary School do not utilise Twitter as a social network since, in their opinion, it is not teen-friendly but rather an adult social networking site that differs from Facebook.

In actuality, Twitter functions very differently from social networks since it emphasises a one-way action—that is, you want to get information from someone in the form of tweets—rather than a reciprocal relationship (Twitter Help Centre, 2011).

The students also mentioned that Twitter has a more sophisticated language structure, meaning that the intricacy of diction is different from that of mobile phone texting because you have to spell out and establish standard grammar instead of abbreviating spellings.

In the sense that Facebook is the social networking site that students prefer the most,

1.3 Research Questions

Which online social networking site is your favourite?

Why did you select that social media platform?

For what purposes do you use that social media platform?

How have you been impacted by the social networking site?

Which student groups use the social networking site Twitter at Essence International?

Why do these student groups use the social networking platform Twitter?

Does Essence International Secondary School pupils’ use of Twitter have an impact?

What effects does students’ use of the social networking site Twitter have?

1.4 The Objectives of the Study

The following are the eight goals of this study:

to learn which social networking sites the pupils were using.

to ascertain the rationale behind the students’ selection of social networking sites.

to ascertain the purpose of the students’ usage of social networking sites.

to ascertain how the kids are impacted by the social networking site.

to determine which student demographics utilise Twitter as a social networking platform.

To ascertain the reasons for the group’s usage of the social networking site Twitter

To determine whether students’ use of the social networking site Twitter has an impact.

To determine the effects that students’ use of the social networking site Twitter has on them.

1.5 Significance of the Research

Teachers, parents, and students can all benefit from this study. In order to help teachers educate and raise awareness of the potential effects social networking sites may have on their students, this study will first help them understand the impact these sites have on their pupils.

Second, it is important for parents since they will be able to monitor their children’s use of social networking sites by knowing the potential consequences of their use.

Thirdly, it will help senior level students understand that, in addition to the social advantages of social networking sites, excessive use of these sites may be harmful to their health.

1.6 The Scope of the Study

The scope of this study is restricted to the effects of Twitter on the behaviour of students at the Essence International Secondary School in Kaduna.

It focusses on the types of social media platforms that students use, the groups of students that use them, and the ways and reasons that students use Twitter. The senior secondary school at Essence International School in Kaduna is the specific emphasis of the target audience.

… CHAPTER TWO

2.0 Literature Review

2.1 Introduction

This chapter’s primary focus is the review of pertinent literature. A literature review discusses the level of knowledge at the time of writing as well as theoretical and methodological contributions to a particular topic. It gives you details about the current state of the art regarding the topic of your essay. It looks at the corpus of research on the selected topic.

DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ONLINE MTN SIM REGISTRATION SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

The SIM Card Registration System is a tool that users utilise to keep track of and manage many SIM card holders from various service providers. Designing and implementing an online MTN SIM registration system is the study’s goal.

In order to accomplish this goal, the following particular goals were established: to create application software that will assist in locating any illegal calls made by subscribers (customers) and gathering customer data for all MTN Nigeria subscribers.

The current SIM card registration procedure is time-consuming and laborious, which is the driving force for the adoption of the suggested solution.

The structured system analysis and design methodology (SSADM), a technical strategy for employing objects throughout the software development process to analyse and design a system or application, is the methodology used in this study.

The programming languages that are utilised are PHP, SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JQuery. Because it is a web-based application and is platform independent, web programming languages were employed.

Because it will facilitate simple SIM registration and revalidation, this research project is important for MTN communication and telecommunication. Additionally, this research project will be used as a reference study guide by academic students, other researchers, and others.

An online MTN SIM registration system that processes the customer’s chosen MTN SIM card and enters all new users’ information on the network in accordance with NCC regulations is the anticipated outcome.

Chapter One

1.1: Introduction

The SIM Card Registration System is a tool that users use to manage and store several SIM card holders from various service providers. This idea offers a very honest method of preserving all of the information about service providers’ cardholders. This project was designed using intricate.net programming and a web application.

This project’s goal is to manage all cardholder data, including address, phone number, pin code, SIM serial number, SIM card number, email address, and so on, so that service providers can simply manage their clients.

All new and existing MTNN Network subscribers, both prepaid and post-paid, are the objective of the MTNN SIM card registration process, which primarily ensures that illegal phone use will be tracked.

The backdrop that motivated this investigation, the challenges that prompted it, and the study’s aim and objectives will all be covered in this chapter as an introduction to later sections of the research. Additional factors include the study’s significance, scope, limitations, and definition of technical words.

1.2 Background of the Study

MTN Nigeria functions under MTN International (Mauritius) Limited, a company that is overseen by the MTN Group as a whole. MTN stands for mobile telephone network, as was previously mentioned (Wikipedia, 2016).

In 1994, the organisation was established in South Africa to operate as a mobile operator. The South African city of Johannesburg is home to the headquarters.

In addition to Nigeria, MTN is present in a few other African nations as well as the Middle East region. Ghana, Ivory Coast, Guinea Republic, Afghanistan, Cyprus, and Syria are among the countries where it operates.

Importantly, MTN (2016) argues that the company is already an African-focused, cutting-edge communications network. In that regard, it has connections to around 203.8 million users worldwide across at least 22 nations.

MTNN will be implementing the MTNN Sim Card Registration in accordance with the Nigeria Communication Commission’s (NCC) directives and as part of efforts to have a valid database and as through Sim card Subscribers in Nigeria.

All MTNN Nigeria subscribers’ comprehensive information is being collected during the MTNN Sim Card Registration procedure. Because of the growing number of criminal acts involving mobile phones in the nation, this became necessary.

This is anticipated to be the main source for MTNN clients’ identity verification. The SIM card registration will allow MTNN to link each SIM card to the real owner’s identification, which will be recorded during the SIM card process.

The procedure for registering is:

Name of subscriber Address

Another phone number

Passport-sized photo

Thumb prints on the left and right

The index finger prints of the left and right

Individual unlocking key

Along with the previously mentioned details, the customer who wishes to register will also need to have an MTNN Sim card appear in person so that a photo and biometric (finger print) may be taken. Leveraging on specific MTNN Sim registration stations across the country, registration points will be set up, for example.

Connect retailers, designated post offices, and trade partners across the country with MTNN walk-in centres. In order to combat telecom crimes, Nigerian authorities have mandated that telecommunications companies, including MTNN, AIRTEL, GLOBACOM, ETISALAT, and others, record the personal information of their clients.

1.3 Statement of Problem The investigation found that the SIM card registration procedure, which is carried out all over the nation, has been extremely time-consuming.

Subscribers go to the registration locations and wait in a long queue until it is their turn; some are unable to complete the process that day and must come back the next day to re-join the queue.

This has been a problem because some of the subscribers are businessmen who have already disconnected from the network and have closed their stores in order to re-validate their SIM cards.

1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Research

Designing and implementing an online MTN SIM registration system is the study’s goal. In order to accomplish this goal, the following particular goals were established in order to create application software that will:

registered each new customer’s information on the network in accordance with NCC regulations;

Compile client data for each and every MTN Nigeria customer; and

assist in locating all illegal calls made by subscribers (customers).

1.5 Significance of the Research

A new strategic approach to registration was born out of the study. Because it will facilitate simple SIM registration and revalidation, this research project is important for MTN communication and telecommunication. Additionally, this research project will be used as a reference study guide by academic students, other researchers, and others.

1.6 Scope of the Study

The design and implementation of an online MTN SIM registration system is the main focus of the study. This study examines the procedures for registering SIM cards, primarily online, in order to verify user information on the SIM. Additionally, this study is for the MTN Nigerian telecom network.

1.7 The Limitations of the Study

Numerous factors hindered the completion of this investigation, including the following:

Time Restraint: Because of the school academic schedule, the researcher had a very small amount of time to complete this project. Additionally, the project was completed under pressure, which prevented the researcher from implementing some essential elements.

Establishment Policies: Because most staff members are not prepared to give the material required for this research project, establishment policies presented a significant limitation.

The scope was limited because the institution’s staff needed to provide a lot of material to improve the study, which they either took a long time to disclose or didn’t release at all for security reasons.

Research material: One significant obstacle to the study’s scope is the availability of research material.

Frequent power outages: In order to provide sustainable power, the researcher had to spend more money on fuel.

Financial Restraint: A lack of funds often makes it more difficult for the researcher to find pertinent literature, materials, or information and to collect data online.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Registration: This refers to preserving management-provided records for future use.

A smart card that is put into a cell phone and contains personal data related to the subscriber’s personal identification number or stored phone numbers is called a SIM card.

A subscriber is a client, individual, or business that buys products and services from another individual or business.

Why Students Need Project Writers for Information and Media Studies

Let’s get real: media is everywhere—but that does not make it easy to write about. Information and Media Studies covers anything from political communication and online journalism to media ethics, the representation of gender, social media algorithms, and even artificial intelligence. It’s not merely a question of what’s contemporary; it’s a question of extracting sense from complex ideas by using academic models and producing structured, original research.

Many students fall into the trap of thinking that they can just “wing it” or patch together articles from Google. Others get bogged down trying to connect theory with actual media content. The reality is, media research requires accuracy, planning, and right academic underpinning.

If you’re lagging behind, lost in your topic, or just plain stuck, teamwork with an Information and Media Studies project writer can bring the focus, clarity, and momentum you require to get going.

THE EFFICACY OF INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES IN THE DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION RESOURCES IN ADAMAWA STATE LIBRARY

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

INTRODUCTION

Technology has proven to be the major driver of knowledge, research and innovation, and information and communication technology has become the most impacting variables of the present information society.

The term ICT is a combination of interconnected hardware and software with peripheral equipment that are programmed for convenience information transfer (Qutab, Bhatti, & Ullah, 2014). It additionally covers web access arrangement, information innovation hardware and administrations, media and broadcasting, library and documentation centers, network based information administrations and other related communication exercises (Anie & Achugbue, 2009).

Today, it is very obvious that, the use of information and communication technology system in all areas of human endeavor is now known and widely acceptable. In library set up, information and communication technology is used to manage one or several library routine services such as acquisition, serial control, cataloguing and classification and the on-line public access catalogue (OPAC).

University libraries in Nigeria, according to Akintunde (2006), naturally display different stages of development in structure and information service delivery to their clients, to meet the millennium developmental target in the area of ICT as enunciated in West African Information system (WAIS) agenda.

Within this context and setting, ICT is defined as electronic gadgets that are used to gather, process, store, retrieve and disseminate or transmit information for the purpose of teaching, learning and research. ICT has brought profound improvement in every aspect of academic library operations particularly in resources building planning, reference and information services and collaboration.

It presents the library a chance to offer some benefit added information services and access to various forms of electronic information materials to their clients. Additionally, academic libraries are in like manner using current ICTs to modernize their main services, adopt strong and ingenious cooperation and consortia, “implement management information systems, create institutional stores of digitized local contents, and conceived computerized assets: and start ICT based capacity building programs for library users:” and library users orientation.

ICT has conveyed remarkable transformations and innovation to academic library and information services, popular Library and Information housekeeping services, for example, OPAC, user services, reference and information services, bibliographic services, current awareness services, resource sharing etc., can be conducted productively and adequately with ICT, as it offers effective, quicker, less costly services in a short time with active participation of the user in information services.

The effect of ICT is obvious on information benefits through changes in types, substance and technique for generation and in addition to conveyance of information items. Development of web as the biggest storehouse of information and learning has changed parts of library and information science experts from mediator to facilitators, provide improved instruments for information transmission, and transform most conventional library services to a web based information services.

Availability and utilization of ICT facilities are preceded by user’s ICT skills, available tools and facilities which enables them to take advantage of ICT and satisfy their information need. It has been established through literature that ICT components such as computers, Internet, e-mail and CD-ROMs are relevant in the delivery of information services in libraries and information centers (Gilbert, 2016; Owolabi, S., Idowu, Okocha, & Ogundare, 2016).

The duty of the library is bound to acquire, preserve, retrieve and disseminate information, a literacy-based facility and with inherent obligation to provide information services to support the education, research, recreational, personal, cultural and economic endeavors of patrons.

The library undertake strenuous efforts to collect, acquire, process and make resources available to its users and also ensure appropriate ways leading to access and retrieval of these information resources.

The collections are predominantly in all fields of agronomy, crop protection, farming systems, extension, rural development, sociology, animal science, plant breeding, plant physiology, soil science and agricultural economics. Other subjects available comprised biology, geography, statistics, economics, librarianship, governance and administration, photography, to mention but few.

This are all tailored to facilitate the library to promote effective service delivery and also be opportune to evaluate collection development, complexities, information needs and the expectation of users especially with the challenges of digital technologies.

The classification of its information resources is faceted thereby expressing all the significant features in a resource enabling different access points, this informed the choice of Universal Decimal Classification and the sheaf catalogue before the migration to utilization of the computer for library operations.

The library still maintains the UDC but all its resources can also be access via the Open Access Catalogue from different terminals within the library. Huge funds have been expended to procure and sustain the library’s electronic resources which comprise LanTEEAL, electronic databases, on-line data bases, e-books on CD-ROMs, and rapid computers and network technologies that provide access to other libraries resources.

This all embracing frontier of electronic resources is challenging even as the library move more towards knowledge-counseling role, advisory roles in locating and effectively coaching, interaction and utilizing resources as it affect the library effective dissemination of information. This study therefore assessed the efficacy of information communication technologies in the dissemination of information resources in Adamawa state library.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Information services in the libraries, especially the academic have experienced innovations due largely to application of ICT and other electronic devices in most library housekeeping and information services.

Also, growth in knowledge with its attendant impact in teaching and learning as well as research has increased the need to employ ICT to expedite action regarding these services. Notwithstanding the advantages, most libraries are still struggling to tap into these opportunities provided by ICT towards users’ satisfaction.

The library under study has provided good number of computers, OPAC, PowerPoint projectors in addition to internet services, personal observation showed that the users are yet to take full advantage of these facilities for research studies and learning. It is against this background the study determines the efficacy of information communication technologies in the dissemination of information resources in Adamawa state library.

H0: There is no significant impact of information communication technologies on dissemination of information resources in the library.

H1: There is a significant impact of information communication technologies on dissemination of information resources in the library.

Hypothesis 2

H0: There is no significant relationship between information communication technologies and dissemination of information resources in the library.

H1: There is a significant relationship between information communication technologies and dissemination of information resources in the library.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will equip the current and future executive officers and staffs of Adamawa state library as well as those interested in its affairs with adequate information on the evolution of the library and thereby enable them to be focused in the pursuit of its founding objectives and the challenges it faces at the present time.

The study would also be of immense benefit to students, researchers and scholars who are interested in developing further studies on the subject matter.

1.7 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study is restricted to the efficacy of information communication technologies in the dissemination of information resources in Adamawa state library.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Financial constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview)

Time constraint: The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS

INFORMATION: As a representation of knowledge, Information is stored knowledge. Traditionally the storage medium has been books, but increasingly electronic media are becoming important. Information as data in the environment Information can be obtained from a range of environmental stimuli and phenomena;

not all of which are intended to ‘convey’ a message, but which can be informative when appropriately interpreted. Information as a resource or commodity Information is transmitted in a message from sender to receiver. The receiver interprets the message as intended by the sender. There may be added value as the information is disseminated or exchanged.

ICT: Stands for “Information and Communication Technologies.” ICT refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. Social networking websites like Facebook allow users from all over the world to remain in contact and communicate on a regular basis.

Library: (from French “librairie”; Latin “liber” = book) is an organized collection of resources made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing. It provides physical or digital access to material, and may be a physical building or room, or a virtual space, or both.

A library’s collection can include books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, films, maps, prints, documents, microform, CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, e-books, audiobooks, databases, and other formats.

IMPACT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) ON CLASSROOM TEACHING

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.10The Study’s Background

It is difficult, if not impossible, to envision future learning environments that are not supported in some way by information and communication technologies (ICT). Looking at the current widespread diffusion and use of ICT in modern societies, particularly among the young – the so-called digital generation – it should be clear that ICT will have an impact on the entire learning process today and in the future.

Almost everywhere on the planet, the African Union (AU), European Union (EU), and member countries have dedicated effort and resources to the promotion and implementation of ICT in education and training, and they continue to do so (e.g. the EU eLearning Program and the SourceCrew Virtual Classroom Program powered by Elluminate).

In other words, there is a widespread belief that ICTs can and should play an important role in changing and modernizing educational systems and learning methods. Despite decades of efforts, there is little scientific evidence of ICTs’ concrete contributions to the learning domain. As a result, there is a need to gather evidence on the impact of ICT on education and training in Africa.

However, many early online courses, such as those developed in the 1970s and 1980s at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, courses at the University of Guelph in Canada, the British Open University, and online distance courses at the University of British Columbia (where Web CT, now incorporated into Blackboard Inc., was first developed), have always made extensive use of online discussion between students.

Furthermore, long before the term “e-learning,” practitioners such as Harasim (1995) placed a strong emphasis on the use of learning networks for knowledge construction. Virtual classrooms (online presentations delivered live) are also being used more frequently as an online learning platform and classroom by a variety of education providers, including Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and Sachem School District.

E-learning lends itself naturally to distance and flexible learning, but it can also be used in conjunction with face-to-face instruction, in which case the term Blended learning is commonly used. Bernard Luskin, an e-Learning pioneer, contends that the letter “E” must be understood to have a broad meaning if e-Learning is to be effective.

According to Luskin, the “e” should be interpreted to mean exciting, energetic, enthusiastic, emotional, extended, excellent, and educational in addition to the traditional national interpretation of “electronic.” This broader interpretation allows for 21st-century applications and incorporates learning and media psychology.

In higher education, in particular, there is an increasing trend toward developing a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) (which is sometimes combined with a Management Information System (MIS) to form a Managed Learning Environment) in which all aspects of a course are handled through a consistent user interface standard across the institution).

A growing number of traditional universities, as well as newer online-only colleges, have begun to offer a select set of academic degree and certificate programs via the Internet at a variety of levels and disciplines. While some programs require students to attend on-campus classes or orientations, many are entirely online. Several universities also provide online student support services such as online advising and registration, e-counseling, online textbook purchase, student governments, and student newspapers.

ICT in the form of e-Learning can also refer to educational websites that provide children with learning scenarios, worksheets, and interactive exercises. The term is also widely used in the business sector, where it generally refers to low-cost online training. Screen casting is a recent trend in the e-Learning industry.

There are numerous screen casting tools available, but the latest buzz is all about web-based screen casting tools, which allow users to create screencasts directly from their browser and publish the video online, allowing viewers to stream the video directly.

The benefit of such tools is that they allow the presenter to show his ideas and flow of thoughts rather than simply explaining them, which can be more confusing when delivered via simple text instructions. The expert can deliver clear, complete instructions using a combination of video and audio, simulating the one-on-one experience of the classroom.

From the learner’s perspective, this provides the ability to pause and rewind, as well as the advantage of moving at their own pace, which a classroom cannot always provide.

1.11Problem formulation

One of the major challenges confronting Nigeria’s educational sector is the alarming disparity between the astronomical increase in the number of applicants seeking admission into various higher institutions and the facilities available in these institutions to provide quality education;

the primary reason for their existence. Every year, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registers hundreds of thousands of students seeking admission to the country’s various institutions of higher learning.

Unfortunately, less than 20% of these students are accepted by these institutions, as the facilities available on-site can only accommodate a limited number of students. In fact, even those admitted to these institutions frequently outnumber the facilities available to support qualitative education and make the academic environment conducive to learning.

As a result, it is not surprising that in most of these institutions, students are frequently crammed into lecture rooms, with most students struggling to find desks and chairs just to listen to lectures. More outrageous and humiliating is the situation in which students sit on the floor while others hang from window frames in order to attend class and listen to their lecturers.

Students are not alone in facing the horrifying situation of sitting on the floor and hanging on the window frames in class to receive lectures. In our institutions of higher learning, lecturers are also affected by this unfortunate situation.

For example, due to the large number of students in their classes, lecturers dissipate their energy while lecturing because they must shout, rather than speak, to be audible enough for the students to hear them. There is no public address system, and when there is,

it is frequently not powered by electricity. Obviously, both lecturers’ and students’ productivity suffer as a result. And, in the end, the original goal of these institutions (providing high-quality education of international standards) is defeated.

The introduction and adoption of effective and efficient ICTs will undoubtedly help to improve the aforementioned unfortunate situation while also complementing these institutions’ efforts to provide quality education. It is a creative and innovative development that enables teachers to teach in a more comfortable and convenient manner.

This is especially true in a virtual classroom where the presence of teachers and students is not always required. This is made possible by web collaboration technology. Virtual classrooms, like physical classrooms, are interactive, and in a densely populated area, it allows the institution to admit more students than they currently do without compromising the quality and standard of education they provide, but rather improves it.

1.12The study’s objectives

The goal of this project is to describe the impact of ICT on classroom teaching through the eyes of students and teachers from various institutions of higher learning. And the objectives encompassed by this objective are as follows:

Improving the current problem and challenges that institutions of (higher) learning in Nigeria face in terms of matching their facilities to the number of students admitted to their schools.

Using eLearning, to create a conducive teaching and learning environment for lecturers and students.

To create an online network and community for teachers and students.

To introduce Nigerian higher education institutions, lecturers, and students to technological advancements and innovations related to eLearning.

1.13The Study’s Purpose

The primary goal of this research is to investigate the impact of ICT in classrooms by incorporating ICT equipment and tools into the teaching-learning process as a media and methodology. In general, to familiarize teachers and students with the use and operation of computers, as well as related social and ethical issues, and to provide prospects and trends for incorporating information and communication technology (ICT) into general educational activities.

1.14Research Issues

The following are some potential research questions:

What are the factors that contribute to our school teachers’ and higher education lecturers’ underutilization of ICT capabilities?

What role can the government play in modernizing our teachers’ and lecturers’ productivity in terms of technological advancement?

What role have our higher education institutions played in matching their facilities to international standards, so that many of our lecturers can be counted on anywhere in the world?

What is the level of readiness of our teachers and lecturers in terms of teaching with cutting-edge technology?

1.15Theory of Research

Based on the research questions, the following hypothesis was developed:

1st Hypothesis:

Information and communication technology is a powerful catalyst for reforming and improving classroom instruction.

The alternative hypothesis is that true improvement is found in schools that use technology as a supplement to their materials rather than as a catalyst, and that improvement is achieved when technology is applied to specific educational problems.

Hypothesis number two:

Even if the instructional materials are of poor quality, the successful operation of the ICT system in the classrooms will assist students in achieving higher learning skills. Academic achievement is determined by the teachers’ roles and the school’s expectations (goals), not by instructional materials and information obtained through the use of the ICT system.

According to the opposing hypothesis, the use of ICT will lower academic achievement due to wasted time spent reviewing lower quality materials from websites.

3rd Hypothesis:

The level of teachers’ ability to integrate ICT in their teaching-learning situations determines the success of ICT implementation. According to this hypothesis, teachers mediate the use of ICT, and the intellectual value of ICT is strongly related to the teachers’ ability.

The opposing hypothesis is that successful ICT adoption is determined by the technological infrastructure of the schools and the students’ ability to use the ICT rather than the teachers’ abilities.

4th Hypothesis:

The technological knowledge gap between haves and have-nots should not widen if everyone has equal access to the ICT system.

The opposing hypothesis is that if everyone has equal access to the ICT system, there will be a greater disparity in technological knowledge between the haves and have-nots.

1.16Importance of the research

With the increasing use of technology in all aspects of society, confident, creative, and productive use of ICT has become a necessary life skill.

ICT capability includes not only mastery of technical skills and techniques, but also the ability to apply these skills purposefully, safely, and responsibly in learning, daily life, and employment. Capability in ICT is essential for participation and engagement in modern society.

ICT can be used to search for, create, analyze, and present information, as well as model situations and solve problems. ICT allows students to collaborate and exchange information on a large scale by providing rapid access to ideas and experiences from a diverse range of people, communities, and cultures.

ICT is a powerful force for social change, and citizens should understand the social, ethical, legal, and economic implications of its use, as well as how to use ICT safely and responsibly. Increased ICT capability promotes initiative and independent learning by allowing students to make informed decisions about when and where to use ICT to improve their learning and the quality of their work.

Some of the importance of ICT in classroom teaching are discussed below:

Access to a wide range of educational resources

In this day and age, ICT provides a wealth of resources to improve teaching and learning skills. It is now possible to provide audiovisual education with the help of ICT. The learning resources are becoming increasingly diverse.

With this vivid and extensive technique now included in the ICT curriculum, students are encouraged to view computers as tools to be used in all aspects of their studies. They must, in particular, use new multimedia technologies to communicate ideas, describe projects, and organize information in their work.

Immediate access to information

Education now has a sense of urgency thanks to advances in technology. In this day and age of computers and web networks, the pace of imparting knowledge is extremely rapid, and one can be educated at any time and from any location. New information technology is frequently introduced into well-established patterns of working and living without fundamentally altering them.

For example, despite the fact that typewriters have been replaced by personal computers, the traditional office, with secretaries working at keyboards and notes written on paper and manually exchanged, has remained remarkably stable.

Whenever you want to learn

In this day and age of computers and web networks, the rate at which knowledge is imparted is extremely rapid, and anyone can be educated. Because of the boom in ICT, one can study whenever he wants, whether it is day or night, and whether he is in Nigeria or the United States.

Collaborative learning is a type of learning that occurs when two or more people work together

ICT has now made it possible to study and teach in groups or clusters. We can work together to complete the task using online collaboration technology. Efficient postal systems, the telephone (fixed and mobile), and various computer-based recording and playback systems all play a role in educational broadcasting in the new millennium.

Many children in developed countries and among educational elites elsewhere are now familiar with the Internet and its Web sites, but it remains of little significance to many more who lack the most basic means of subsistence.

A multimedia approach to education

Audio-Visual Education is the planning, preparation, and use of devices and materials for educational purposes that involve sight, sound, or both. Still and motion pictures, filmstrips, television, transparencies, audiotapes, records, teaching machines, computers, and videodiscs are among the devices used. The expansion of audio-visual education has mirrored advancements in both technology and learning theory.

According to research in the psychology of learning, the use of audio-visuals in education has several advantages. Perception, the process by which the senses gather information from their surroundings, underpins all learning. The higher processes of memory and concept formation are impossible to achieve without prior perception.

People can only pay attention to a limited amount of information at one time, and their choice and perception of information is influenced by previous experiences. Other things being equal, researchers discovered that receiving information simultaneously in two modalities (vision and hearing, for example) is more effective than receiving it in a single modality. Furthermore, learning is enhanced when material is organized and visible to the student.

These findings point to the importance of audio-visual aids in the educational process. They can aid perception of the most important features, be meticulously organized, and require the student to use more than one modality.

Information that is true and up to date

The information and data available on the internet are completely accurate and up to date.

The Internet, a collection of computer networks that adhere to common standards and allow computers and the programs that run on them to communicate directly, provides true and correct information.

Library on the internet

Thousands of different types of operational and experimental services are supported by ICT. One of these is an online library. This online library has a wealth of information.

Learners are encouraged to view computers as tools to be used in all aspects of their studies as part of the ICT curriculum. They must, in particular, use new multimedia technologies to communicate ideas, describe projects, and organize information in their work. This necessitates them selecting the best medium for conveying their message, structuring information in a hierarchical manner, and linking information together to create a multidimensional document.

Learning at a distance

Distance learning is a method of learning that takes place at a distance rather than in a classroom. Late-twentieth-century communications technologies, most recently multimedia and interactive, open up new possibilities for an unprecedented expansion of home-based learning, much of it part-time, on both an individual and institutional level.

Within the context of a continuing communications revolution, the term distance learning was coined, largely replacing a previously confusing mixed nomenclature—home study, independent study, external study, and, most commonly, though limited in pedagogical means, correspondence study.

In response to criticisms that distance learning is an inadequate substitute for learning alongside others in formal institutions, the convergence of increased demand for access to educational facilities and innovative communications technology has been increasingly exploited. Reduced costs per student have been a strong motivator. At the same time, students who study at home save money on travel and other expenses.

Whatever the reason, distance learning allows students who are unable to study alongside others for whatever reason (course availability, geographical remoteness, family circumstances, individual disability) to do so. Simultaneously, it appeals to students who prefer to learn at home. Furthermore, it appeals to professional and business education organizers by providing an incentive to reconsider the most effective way of communicating critical information.

Access to children with disabilities should be improved.

The impact of information and communication technology on the lives of disabled children has been dramatic. ICT provides a variety of software and techniques for educating these impoverished people. People who are profoundly deaf from birth are unable to learn to speak unless they receive special training at a young age.

Deafness from birth results in severe sensory deprivation, which can have a serious impact on a person’s intellectual capacity or ability to learn. A child who develops a hearing loss early in life may not receive the same level of language stimulation as children who can hear.

Up to the age of seven, the critical period for neurological plasticity exists. Failure of acoustic sensory input during this period leads to failure of synaptic connection formation and, potentially, an irreversible situation for the child. A deaf child’s academic progress may be slower than that of hearing children due to a delay in learning language.

Academic lag is typically cumulative, so a deaf adolescent may be four or more academic years behind his or her hearing peers. Deaf children who receive early language stimulation through sign language, on the other hand, perform academically on par with their hearing peers.

1.17The study’s scope

The impact of ICT on learning can be approached in a variety of ways. There is no single concept of ICT-assisted learning. There are numerous possibilities, including computer-assisted learning, web-learning, computer-classes, online training, distance education, eLearning, virtual learning, digital training, and so on. This study takes a broad view of ICT and teaching.

As a result, its impact on the teaching process includes not only traditional teaching outcomes, but also student use of ICT (learning), organizational use of ICT by education and training institutions, and, last but not least, the impact of ICT-enabled education on, for example, personal development, confidence, and self-esteem.

ICT is becoming a more important factor in education. Computers are used in developed countries to supplement traditional educational practices as well as to develop new modes of learning such as online education (a type of distance education).

This gives students the opportunity to choose what they want to learn. Programming and blogging are becoming more popular as computers become more widely available. Technology provides powerful learning tools, such as multimedia, that demand new skills and understandings from students, as well as new ways to engage students, such as virtual learning environments.

Virtual classrooms are one such tool. They are a “interactive, Web-based visual representation of a dynamic object that provides opportunities for constructing mathematical knowledge” (Moyer, Bolyard, & Spikell, 2002).

THE EFFECTIVENESS AND REGULARITY OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICTS) USE AMONG BUSINESS EDUCATION UNDERGRADUATES

ABSTRACT

ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) have proven to be extremely beneficial to the educational sector over the years. Computers, the internet, and projectors are examples of such technologies. The purpose of this study is to look into the effectiveness and consistency of ICT use among business education undergraduates. The scope of this study was limited to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU).

The sample population consisted of 200 business undergraduates from the two aforementioned universities. In data analysis, the Chi-square statistical tool was used. The following suggestions were made: The administrations of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) ensure that more ICT tools are provided for the school in order to accommodate the school’s ever-growing student population.

Because business students at the two universities are making good use of the ICT facilities provided by their schools, the school administration should try to ensure that basic necessities such as electricity are always available. This would ensure that the product was used indefinitely. The existing ICT facilities in those two universities should be constantly updated to ensure that their Business Education students can compete with their counterparts in other parts of the world.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 STUDY BACKGROUND

ICT is an abbreviation for Information and Communication Technology. They are a diverse set of technological tools and resources used for communication as well as the creation, dissemination, storage, and management of information. Computers, the internet, broadcasting technologies (radio and television), and telephony are examples of these technologies (Volman,2005).

In recent years, there has been a surge of interest in how computers and the internet can be used to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of education at all levels and in both formal and informal settings (www.en.m.wikibooks.org).

However, ICTs are more than just these technologies; older technologies such as television, radio, and telephone, which are now receiving less attention, have a longer and richer history as educational tools. Computers and the internet are still in their infancy in developing countries, owing to limited infrastructure and the associated high cost of access.

ICTs are bringing about rapid changes in society. They have an impact on all aspects of life. The effects are becoming more noticeable in schools. ICTs give both students and teachers more options for tailoring teaching and learning to individual needs, and society is pressuring schools to respond appropriately to this technological innovation.

According to Tinio (2002), ICTs have the potential to increase access while also improving the relevance and quality of education in developing countries. He went on to say that ICTs greatly facilitate knowledge acquisition and absorption, providing developing countries with unprecedented opportunities to improve educational systems, improve policy formulation and implementation,

and broaden the range of opportunities for business and the poor. One of the most difficult challenges faced by the poor and many others living in the poorest countries is a sense of isolation, and ICTs can open up access to knowledge in ways that were unimaginable not long ago.

According to Watson (2001), ICTs have revolutionized the way people work today and are now transforming educational systems. As a result, if schools teach students yesterday’s skills and technologies, they may be ineffective and unfit for the world of tomorrow.

This alone is reason enough for ICTs to gain global recognition and attention. For example, ICTs are dependable tools in facilitating the achievement of one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which is to achieve Universal Basic Education by 2015. Former UN Secretary General Kofi Anan points out that in order to achieve the goal of Universal Primary Education by 2015, we must ensure that information and communication technologies open the door to education systems.

This demonstrates the growing demand for ICTs in education and their growing importance. Because ICTs provide more opportunities for students and teachers to tailor learning and teaching to individual needs, society is pressuring schools to respond appropriately to this technological innovation.

The use of ICT is making a significant difference in student learning and teaching approaches. Over the last 20 years, schools in the Western world have invested heavily in ICT infrastructure, and students now use computers more frequently and for a broader range of applications (Volman, 2005). Several studies have found that students who use ICT facilities learn more than those who do not.

ICT provides a variety of technical tools that enhance the academic experience, allowing for greater variety, diversity, and organization in education. Business Education, like all other courses of study, provides a creative field in which the opportunities provided by ICT can be explored.

It goes without saying that businesses cannot thrive in the modern era without an informative and communicative edge, nor can business education graduates be globally competitive unless they are equipped with ICT skills. Against this backdrop, this researcher investigates the frequency and efficacy of ICT use among business education students.

1.2PROBLEM STATEMENT

The invaluable importance of ICT tools such as computers, audio-visual equipment, internet access, and so on to the course has been fully brought to the attention of business education stakeholders. They are unsure, however, whether this technological opportunity is being exploited and explored in the most effective and optimal manner.

Information Communication Tools are an essential component of business and business education, and their widespread use, particularly in recent years, is gradually being integrated into undergraduate education.

Furthermore, many universities and libraries in Nigeria are rapidly incorporating ICT tools like computers and the internet into their programs for student use. The goal of this study is to investigate the efficacy and consistency of ICT use among business education students.

1.3 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The following goals are being pursued through this research:

i. To reveal the extent to which undergraduate students in the institutions covered by this study have access to ICT tools, thereby predicting the spread and literacy of ICT among those students.

ii. Determine the extent to which business education students in those schools use the school’s ICT facilities.

iii. Determine the extent to which business education students use ICT facilities to supplement their studies.

iv. To determine how students can make better use of the ICT resources to which they have access.

1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

i. Are business education students sufficiently equipped with the ICT tools required for genuine academic growth and global competitiveness?

ii. Do business education students make adequate use of the school’s ICT resources?

iii. Do business education students make adequate use of ICT resources to supplement their studies?

iv. How can business education students make better use of the ICT resources to which they have access?

1.5 HYPOTHESES FOR RESEARCH

The following hypotheses were developed to achieve the goal of this study:

ONE HYPOTHESIS

H1: Students in business education do not have enough ICT tools to help them with their studies.

TWO HYPOTHESIS

H2: Business education students are not making adequate use of the school’s ICT resources.

THREE HYPOTHESIS

H3: Business education students do not make adequate use of ICT resources to supplement their studies.

FOURTH HYPOTHESIS

H4: Business education students are not fully utilizing the capabilities of ICT tools.

1.6 RESTRICTIONS ON THE STUDY

This research will primarily focus on business education students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU).

1.7 THE STUDY’S LIMITATIONS

The researcher was also hampered by intermittent electrical instability, which hampered certain observations.

1.8 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE

i. The findings of this study will reveal the flaws in business education students’ use of ICT technologies.

ii. This research will assist in opening the eyes of business education students to the previously unexplored variety of opportunities that exist in ICT use.

iii. This research will also assist business education students in understanding how to increase the impact of ICT on their studies.

1.9 OPERATIONAL TERMS DEFINITION

i. Information and Communication Technologies: In this study, this refers to the computer and internet connections used to handle and communicate information for the purpose of learning.

ii. E-learning: A learning program that uses an information network, such as the internet, an intranet (LAN), or an extranet (WAN), in whole or in part, for course delivery, interaction, and/or facilitation. Web-based learning is a subset of e-learning that refers to learning through the use of an internet browser such as moodle, blackboard, or internet explorer (Tinio,2002)

iii. Blended learning: Learning models that combine face-to-face classroom practice with e-learning solutions are referred to as blended learning. A teacher, for example, may facilitate student learning in class and use the module (modular object oriented dynamic learning environment) to facilitate learning outside of class.

iv. Constructivism: This is a learning paradigm that considers learning to be a process. Individuals “create” meaning or new knowledge based on prior knowledge and experience (Johanssen, 2004). In contrast to the long-established behaviorism view of learning, educators refer to it as emerging pedagogy.

v.Learner-centered learning environment: This is a learning environment that focuses on the skills, attitudes, and beliefs that learners bring to the learning process, and its impetus is derived from a learning paradigm known as constructivism. In the context of this article, it refers to the student’s personal involvement in the learning task through the use of a computer and/or an internet connection.

AVAILABILITY, ACCESSIBILITY AND USE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICTS) IN HUMANITIES EDUCATION

CHAPTER ONE

1.0INTRODUCTION

1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

The world is undergoing an information and communication technology revolution, which has significantly altered many aspects of human life. From education to industry, economy, and politics to entertainment, there is something for everyone (Ayeni, 2000).

In many countries today, the use of ICTs has become so important that it is now one of the most important indicators of national and economic development; thus, Nigeria’s quest for economic growth cannot be realized without a significant contribution of information and communication technology in teaching and learning at all levels and aspects of her educational system. (Adamu, 2001)

According to Ajayi (2003), information and communication technology (ICT) is any product that stores or retrieves information electronically in a digital form, such as personal computers, digital television, e-mail, robots, and desktop computers.

According to Ali (2004), information and communication technology is the physical structure of a network of computer base systems (hardware, software, and media) used for organizing, processing, communicating, accessing, presenting, storing, retrieving, and simplifying information when and in the form it is needed.

Ogiegbuan and Iyamu (2005) defined ICT as the use of existing digital technology to assist individuals, businesses, and organizations in using information.

ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) have become an essential part of modern life. In fact, culture and society have evolved to meet the challenges of the information age. Because of the pervasiveness of ICTs, there has been rapid technological, social, political, and economic transformation. Thus, a “information society” network is organized around ICTs, with the educational sector not left out. Amakin (2006) and Jagboro (2005)

One of the goals of higher education is to acquire, develop, and instill the proper value orientation for the individual and society’s survival (NPE, 2004).

Students in higher education institutions are expected to become acquainted with the content and operations of their discipline area, as well as to learn how to operate within the institutional culture and the sub-culture of their particular faculty. This can be furthered by incorporating ICTs into teaching and research (NFE, 2004).

It is widely acknowledged that information and communication technology (ICT) can be used to improve the quality of teaching and learning in any tertiary institution. The pervasiveness and rapid development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have shifted human society from the information technology age to the knowledge age (Galbreath, 200).

Onasanya (2004) stated that ICTs are becoming a natural part of man’s daily life, and thus their use in education by staff (academic and non-academic) and students is becoming a necessity. Without a doubt, the current and future academic global community will make extensive use of ICTs. As a result, it is critical that lecturers not only use ICTs, but also become comfortable with them. This is to ensure that they fully participate in the life of a modern university and complete their daily tasks.

According to the Milken Exchange on Education Technology, (1999), information and communication technologies (ICTs) are computer-based tools used by people to work with an organization’s information and communication processing needs.

It includes computer hardware and software, the network, and a variety of other devices (video, audio, photography, camera, and so on) that convert information (text), images, sound, motion, and so on into a common digital format.

Finally, the potentials of ICT can ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of teaching and learning in humanities education.

The increasing rate of acquisition of computers and other information technologies for use by staff and students in Nigeria demonstrates the growing importance of ICTs in modern university education.

Despite the fact that much has been written and said about the value of ICTs in teaching, learning, and research, studies have shown that successful integration of technology into the university system is dependent not only on access and availability, but also on the extent to which faculty and students embrace these technologies (Horgan, 1998).

ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has permeated every aspect of human development, with education being the most significant beneficiary. In light of the foregoing, this project decided to consider the significance of this phenomenon in humanities education.

1.1 THE PROBLEM’S STATEMENT

In today’s world, information and communication technologies (ICTs) have become a phenomenon in the educational system. However, it is generally true that for some people, ICTs may not be readily available, used, or underutilized, and that their use may not be adequately appreciated. The purpose of this study is to look into the availability, accessibility, and use of ICTs in humanities education.

1.2 STUDY PURPOSE

The primary goal of this research is to assess the level of awareness and utilization of ICTs in humanities education among lecturers and students in order to improve teaching and learning. As a result of the findings of this work, appropriate recommendations would be made to facilitate students’ understanding and improvement of their interest in learning through the implementation of ICTs facilities, which will promote lecture productivity and enhance their professional capabilities.

1.3 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

1. ICTs are useful in humanities education.

2. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are widely available in humanities education.

3. The accessibility of ICTs in humanities education is certain.

4. Lecturers in humanities education have a high level of ICT literacy.

5. Students have a high level of ICT literacy in humanities education.

6. Students’ ICT literacy level in humanities education is sufficient for using ICT techniques in teaching and learning.

7. As a student, do you believe that the use of ICTs in humanities education is beneficial?

8. If so, what do you think these benefits are?

1.4 THE STUDY’S IMPORTANCE

This research would be useful to the following groups of people:

a group of students

Instructions

Teachers and other educators

This is due to the fact that it would identify policy options and strategies for making ICTs more relevant and beneficial in humanities education.

The study will also educate the government on the importance of allocating more funds to the educational sector, particularly in the provision of ICT equipment in higher education.

It will also awaken lecturers and students to the importance of adequate ICT adoption through ongoing training in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).

1.5 THE STUDY’S OBJECTIVE

The research will concentrate on humanities education at Lagos University in terms of accessibility, availability, and use of ICTs.

EFFECTS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SECRETARIES IN THE FRONT OFFICE

ABSTRACT

The research looked into the effects of information technology on the performance of front-office secretaries. The study used a survey research design to assess the opinions of the selected respondents using a 13-item questionnaire. To guide the study, three research questions and hypotheses were proposed.

Data were analyzed using simple sample techniques, frequency and percentages, and Chi Square to test hypotheses. According to the study’s findings, ICT application has had a positive impact on the secretarial profession.

It was also noted that the use of ICT has reduced the number of secretaries employed, and those who are employed face retrenchment. Finally, it was noted that while most secretaries have no trouble using ICT, maintenance and procurement are issues.

Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: the organization should make adequate provision for ICT and necessary infrastructure should be provided so that the secretaries will be efficient and accurate in the performance of their duty; the secretaries should endeavor to update their knowledge as soon as possible so that they are well abreast of the modern office equipment; and efforts at training students/ pupils on ICT as a course should be intensified in the school.

THE FIRST CHAPTER

INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Study’s Background

Information and communication technology (ICT) is widely regarded as the world’s fourth industrial revolution (Asakpa, 2003). Indeed, information and communication technology (ICT) has become the gateway to the modern information skills and orientation (ISO) that distinguish the world order. ICT in the secretarial field can be defined as the use of digital devices in all aspects of secretarial duties.

ICT is defined in the context of the secretarial profession as a combination of technology for collecting, storing, processing, file management, diary keeping, communicating, and delivering information pertaining to secretarial processes (Oladimeji 2003).

The spread and efficiency of information and communication technology (ICT) are critical to the achievement of secretarial goals (Obanya 2002). ICT encompasses all aspects of computer, microelectronic device, satellite, and communication technology use.

According to the national ICT policy (2001), ICT is any equipment used in the acquisition, storage, manipulation, management, control, display, switching, and transmission of information. In another dimension, ICT is defined as any form of communication that is used, assessed, relayed, and transmitted to communicate, send, and receive information.

The use of these devices converts information, text, messages, sound, and motion to digital form. In an office setting, ICT influences secretarial behavior by training and retraining secretaries. It is an essential part of secretarial duties. Because a secretary’s job entails both managerial and clerical duties.

The potential of ICT as an effective tool for increasing efficiency and meeting current secretarial challenges in the organization is undeniable. Nigeria’s federal government approved a national ICT policy in March 2001, and implementation began in April of that year.

The federal government recognized that private service providers have enormous capacity for ICT services with the establishment of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), which is charged with policy implementation. As a result, the government established the Nigeria National ICT for Development of ICT4D, strategic action plan committee to create a new road map for the country.

ICT has had a positive impact on the secretarial profession in so many ways that no nation can escape this transforming movement propelled forward by the engines of the internet and modern day inventions such as computers, fax machines, GSM, and so on. This means that secretaries must now focus their entire careers on ICT in order to stay in business.

According to recent findings, the introduction and application of ICT into the secretarial profession improved the performance of secretaries in all organizations. Recent studies have also shown that the use of ICT makes the secretary work less and more accurately (Ogunsiji and Aregbe 2010).

According to Lasisi (2005), ICT has improved the function of a secretary and eliminated the boredom of using a typewriter. The cyber revolution has begun to reshape the secretarial profession by fostering new self-images, creativity, and innovation, as well as an ever-expanding technological framework. However, the new challenges of ICT, as well as the excitement they generate, do not appear to pervade the entire society.

Many nobles had secretaries in the early modern period who functioned similarly to those of today. They are men who had a good command of several languages, including Latin, and were required to have what we would call a broad generalized education today. Following the Renaissance, men continued to dominate clerical and secretarial roles until the late 1880s, when the new writing machine allowed women to enter the profession.

The National Secretaries Association (NSA) was founded in 1942. (now know as the International Association of Administrative professional).

The National Security Agency (NSA) first administered the certificate of professional secretaries examination in 1951. The history of the secretarial profession in Nigeria dates back to the arrival of missionaries and colonial masters.

Through the elimination of the monotonous aspect of paper holding and filling, information technology has limited the role of the secretary. As a result, the secretary would most likely have more time for work involving human behavior. There is no doubt that information and communication technology (ICT) has made significant contributions to the secretarial profession. The scope of this research project is to investigate the impact of information technology on the performance of secretaries in the workplace.

1.2 Problem description

The inefficiency of the typewriter and the secretary’s duties in the office has had an indirect and direct impact on the organizational framework, slowing the efficiency of the front office. There have been numerous research efforts to recommend or find a long-term solution to the challenges that secretaries face in the office, but there are still gaps. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of information technology on the performance of secretaries in the workplace.

1.3 The Study’s Purpose

1. To investigate the impact of information technology on office secretaries.

2. To investigate the issues of information technology in the secretarial profession.

3. To determine how the use of ICT has improved front-office efficiency.

1.4 Research Issues

1. How has the use of ICT affected the secretarial profession and individual secretaries?

2. What are the issues that secretaries face when using ICT?

3. Can the adoption of ICT in an organization result in the retrenchment of secretaries?

1.5 Research Proposal

1. Secretaries’ use of ICT will be unaffected by problems they encounter.

2. The use of information and communication technology has no significant impact on the secretarial profession or the individual secretary.

3. There is no statistically significant relationship between ICT adoption and secretary retrenchment.

1.6 The Study’s Importance

– It is intended to investigate the impact of ICT on secretaries and identify factors that prevent secretaries from performing better.

– This study will also raise awareness among individual secretaries by enlightening them on the roles of ICT in the desk office.

– The study will determine what lessons need to be learned on how ICT lessons can be applied consistently in order to assist secretaries in performing their duties with good secretarial attributes.

– The study will also assess the impact of ICT in the office and on secretaries, as well as propose solutions.

1.7 The Study’s Scope

Concerning the project topic at hand, the research has been limited to Straco Insurance Company, Zenith Bank, University of Lagos, Yaba Local Government Office, and Shomolu Local Government Office.

THE INFLUENCE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON THE MORAL BEHAVIOURS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT

The study looked at the impact of information and communication technology (ICT) on the moral behaviors of adolescents in secondary schools in Lagos State’s Oshodi Local Government Area. A relevant and extensive literature review was also conducted in this study under some subheadings.

In this study, three null hypotheses were developed and tested, and the data was analyzed using the independent t-test statistical tool at the 0.05 level of significance. The descriptive research survey design was used to assess respondents’ opinions using the questionnaire titled “Influence of Information Communication Technology (ICT) on Moral Behavior of Adolescence,” and stratified random sampling was used to select the sample.

In addition, a total of 200 (two hundred) respondents were chosen and used as representatives of the study’s entire population. The following results were obtained at the conclusion of the data analysis: ICT has a significant impact on students’ moral behavior in school. Due to the use of ICT in school, there is a significant gender difference in delinquent behavior among students.

The use of ICT and adolescent social adjustment in school have a significant relationship. Among the recommendations made was that the use of ICT be included in the school curriculum at both the lower and upper levels of the Nigerian school system. This will help to improve teaching and learning in the school.

Students should maximize the benefits of ICT by not allowing the use of ICT, whether through phones, newspapers, magazines, or the internet, to sway their moral rectitude at school or at home.

It is obvious that using ICT via the internet to watch pornographic films, strange videos, and other electronic media influences students’ behavior in general. Having said that, students should not allow themselves to be involved in immoral acts as a result of the use of ICT.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1The Study’s Background

Nigeria has since embraced the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the storage, processing, and retrieval of critical information. Nigeria has also been identified as a country that aspires to be included in the community of nations, as one that has adapted to the e-world, where ICT is the in-thing.

In Nigeria, for example, information and communication technology is used in educational, political, economic, and religious settings. It has infiltrated Nigeria so thoroughly that anyone who is not computer literate is now considered uneducated (Nwafor, 2005). The preceding opinion summarizes the essence and impact of ICT on Nigerians’ and Nigeria’s overall activities.

It is worth noting that moral decadence has been on the rise since the advent of information and communication technology (ICT) (Anyanwu, 2000). This is because most crimes in today’s society are associated with the use or contact with gadgets associated with information technology such as the phone, the internet, the television, and so on.

The term “information” refers to a wide range and variety of things, including oral and written words, figures, statements, files, and documents, as well as intangible elements such as sounds, signals, rays, and waves. The essence of information, whatever form it takes, is that it conveys a message.

UNESCO (1979) defined information as a “set of data recorded in a methodical manner,” which includes any item of knowledge capable of facilitating the operation of a system and any numerical or alpha-numerical quantity processed by the machine, according to the document. The data and results of a problem are comprised of the aggregate of information.

The term ‘technology,’ according to Ajaiyi (2004), refers to the application of scientific knowledge. Information technology is defined as the acquisition, processing, storage, and dissemination of vocal, pictorial, textual, and numerical information through the use of a macro-base combination of computing and telecommunication.

Telecommunication is a type of communication in which data is transmitted over long distances. Information technology also refers to a more efficient method of storing, accessing, and updating information than the paper-based process.

The way an organism, a machine, or any substance acts or works is referred to as its behavior. In the case of humans, there are two types of behavior: private and overt. The private is defined by a person’s behavior in his or her environment, whereas the overt, while related to the private,

is visible to others in the person’s environment. Behavior is a cooperative action between a person’s internal equipment and the nature of the environment in which the person lives. If the environmental stimulation is sufficiently strong, the organism’s internal equipment responds in a predictable pattern. Habits are formed as a result of repetition (Allports, 2005).

According to Pitty (2000), a person’s behavior is judged desirable or undesirable in a social context. What is desirable in one social situation may be unappealing in another. The relationship between antecedent conditions and subsequent events is what determines whether something is desirable or undesirable.

The antecedent conditions are events in a person’s social environment, while the subsequent events are the outcomes of these events, which may be appreciated or despised.

Environmental events take time to have an impact on an individual. In other words, environmental effects are cumulative and long-lasting. According to Uzor (2001), an individual’s current behavior manifestations may be functionally related to events that occurred in that individual’s life prior to those manifestations.

According to Ekpo (2002), information received by students via computer, television, and telephone can change or modify behavior. The information can generate new responses or change old ones, depending on the degree of observation allowed to the socializing individual and the type of imitation he/she can have of the behaviors and attitudes displayed by his models.

Despite the fact that the forces of development are primarily within the individual. In a natural environment free of corruption, the environment plays a secondary role in the process of natural enfoldment of that which nature has enfolded within the individual. Individuals will develop positively and rationally if the information is positive and conducive; otherwise, the development may be detrimental (Ajumel and Almonde, 2003).

According to Adams (2004), the interactionist position of individuals with the type, quantity, and quality of information received better explains the concept of individual differences in a culture, system, or organization that has a tendency to mold the people.

Socialization refers to the training given to children to help them meet the demands of the society in which they live. Information technology can help students with the following tasks: getting along with others (respecting others’ rights); self-reliance or self-confidence; academic success; material success; professional success; and adhering to a societal value system.

Morals are concerned with behavioral standards, which are the fundamental principles that guide people in determining what is right or wrong, and thus what is good or bad. That is, morals direct people in the right direction and enable society to value and preserve fundamental virtues such as love, honesty, self-control, modesty, chastity, truthfulness, discipline, and so on.

Simultaneously, morals govern people’s welfare and sharpen their attitudes toward things like cheating in exams or corrupt practices in society, selfishness, dishonesty, greed, theft, robbery, fornication or adultery, and so on (Adekoya, 2002).

Adekoya believes that the use of ICT in schools by adolescents has caused some of them to perform poorly in their exams. What can one expect from a student who does not read or study well because he spends so much time watching television shows, watching or viewing pornographic films on the internet, and busy posting letters to friends on Facebook or YouTube, according to him?

Not only has the use of ICT caused them to achieve low or dismal academic performance, but it has also caused some adolescents to be recluses, i.e. keeping to themselves in order to have time to watch bad movies on the internet. This has had an impact on their social adjustment with peers in society or at home.

According to Uzor (2006), the use of ICT has caused male and female students to become promiscuous as a result of the negative influence it has created in them. This is due to the fact that adolescents mimic what they see and hear on television, the internet, and other media.

Adolescents in schools nowadays use telephones, the internet, and other forms of (ICT) to gather information that helps them carry out their educational pursuits effectively, thanks to the advancement of information communications technology.

Nonetheless, adolescent use of ICT has resulted in a slew of societal ills. For example, many students use their phones to tell lies, and many of them corrupt their minds by visiting pornographic websites and viewing corruptive and strange images. They become corrupt, promiscuous, dishonest, and immoral as a result of this medium (Bello, 2008). This study seeks to determine the extent to which ICT influences the morality of individuals, particularly students in our various secondary schools.

1.2Statement of the Issues

The purpose of this research is to determine whether or not the use of ICT by adolescents in school has affected their moral and ethical behaviors at home and at school, and whether or not the Nigerian school system and society have fared well since the introduction of ICT.

There is no denying that, since the advent of telephones, the internet, Facebook, and YouTube, society and schools have experienced their fair share of the ills associated with ICT. For example, the advent of ICT has led to some Nigerian youths in schools imbibing the culture of lying, stealing electronically (i.e. the famous yahoo-yahoo) that is

currently popular, and cheating at examinations and tests. Others have had their minds corrupted by viewing strange or pornographic images on the internet. As a result, some Nigerian youths or adolescents in schools have become corrupt, promiscuous, and immoral in their behavior or attitudes.

Not only that, but the use of ICT by children may have caused many of them to become deviants, obtaining by trickery (OBT), prostitutes, bullies, and disrespectful to authority figures in society and school. All of this is a result of what they hear, learn, and see as a result of the use of ICT materials that have infiltrated the entire world today.

The aforementioned issues prompted the study of ICT and adolescent moral behavior in schools.

1.3The Study’s Purpose

The primary goals of this research are as follows:

(1) Determine whether ICT influences students’ moral behavior.

(2) Determine whether there is a link between ICT and student academic performance.

(3) Determine whether there is a gender difference in student delinquent behavior as a result of the use of information and communication technology.

(4) Determine whether there is a link between the use of ICT and adolescents’ social adjustment in school.

1.4Research Issues

The following research questions have been posed:

(1) Will the use of ICT affect students’ moral behavior?

(2) Is there a link between students’ academic performance and their use of ICT?

(3) Will there be significant gender differences in student delinquent behavior as a result of ICT use?

(4) Is there a link between the use of ICT and adolescents’ social adjustment at school?

1.5Analysis of Research Hypotheses

In this study, the following hypotheses were developed:

(1) Information and communication technology will have no significant impact on students’ moral behavior.

(2) There will be no statistically significant relationship between ICT use and students’ academic performance in school.

(3) There will be no significant gender differences in student delinquent behavior as a result of the use of ICT in the classroom.

(4) There will be no significant relationship between the use of ICT and the social adjustment of adolescents in school.

1.6The Study’s Importance

The following people will benefit from this research:

Teachers: The recommendations and findings of this study would benefit teachers in our various institutions – primary, secondary, and tertiary. This is because the study’s findings and recommendations would go a long way toward informing teachers about the influences of ICT on the moral and religious behavior of adolescents in schools, particularly at the secondary school level.

Students: Would benefit greatly from this study because it will serve as a wake-up call for them. Without a doubt, the use of ICT is critical to the academic careers of adolescents, but the dangers inherent in the use of ICT cannot be overstated.

As a result, the purpose of this study is to bridge the gap between the use of ICT and the immorality associated with it among youths in schools. This research will assist students in developing an interest in the use and application of various information and communication technologies in the storage and retrieval of critical information regarding academic performance and educational careers.

The School Authority will benefit from this study as well, because it will help them understand how to proceed in resolving the problem(s) caused by students’ use of ICT and its impact on the overall well-being of the school system.

Parents: The findings and conclusions of this study will provide them with necessary or vital information because they will help them understand the use and importance of information and communication technology to their children and wards.

Society: The findings and conclusions of this study will have a significant impact on society. For example, this study will be eye-opening for members of the larger society in that it will inform them about the use of information and communication technology by students and others at school and in society.

1.7Scope of the Research

The study looked at the impact of ICT on adolescents’ moral behaviors in some selected secondary schools in Lagos State’s Oshodi Government Area.

1.8Terms Definition

In this study, operational terms were defined in this manner.

In this study, technology refers to tools and machines that can be used to solve real-world problems. It also refers to material objects of human use, such as machines, hardware, software, systems, organizational methods, and techniques. In this context, technology is defined as the techniques used by individuals in school or society to keep up with new discoveries in the world.

The term “innovation” is used in the study to describe both radical and incremental changes to ICT products and processes. In the organizational context, innovation is linked to improved efficiency, productivity, quality, competitive positioning, market share, and so on.

ICT (Information Communication Technology): ICT is an abbreviation for Information Communication Technology, which encompasses all electronic technologies and equipment used to facilitate information processing and communication.

Moral Behaviour: This is a term used to describe an individual’s right behavior or attitudes in a given community. In a decent society, it is the upholding of ethics, values, and norms. Moral behavior is defined in this study as the way and manner in which an individual carries himself or herself, based primarily on one’s religious beliefs.
