IMPACT OF STUDENT ASSESSMENT ON THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The primary goal of providing education to all Nigerians is to give them with a solid and dependable foundation for a self-sufficient lifestyle. Since independence, education has been seen as the cornerstone of national progress.

The primary goal was to examine the materials and physical facilities situation in Tanzanian community secondary schools in order to determine whether resources for successful teaching are available and that the schools adhere to the framework of quality education provision.

Since independence, Tanzania’s educational system has seen several notable changes. In 1962, the development plan and extension of secondary education were implemented, as well as the removal of racial discrimination and the establishment of a single educational system. The implementation of five-year growth plans in 1964 included aims for the country’s education.

Nigeria has been attempting to promote secondary education since its independence in 1960, guided by changing policy orientations throughout time. However, the expansion techniques have been linked to a variety of educational issues and planning obstacles.

Education is one of the most significant factors to national economic performance and human improvement, and so requires more dedication than other development efforts.

According to Fisman and Roberta (2002), it also requires professional, highly trained, and dedicated staff, a quality curriculum, infrastructure, and enough teaching and learning resources.

In Nigeria, for example, when discussing issues of quality education, it is critical not to overlook the issues of work load, low compensation, and denial of teacher rights.

In this regard, this study seeks to investigate in depth the extension of quality education development in Nigeria, which has been directed by both macroeconomic and sectorial policies.

The education training program was bolstered by two macroeconomic strategies developed in the late 1990s: the poverty reduction document and the Nigeria Development Vision 2025. Aside from such policies, the government has overlooked the future by prioritising education in resource allocation.

The educational sector has issues in ensuring effective utilisation and accountability of increasing utilisation and accountability of increasing financing for the provision of quality education.

Based on the recognition that education is a broad field of study, many studies can be undertaken in its various components, including topic areas, school environments, achievement assessments, and teaching and learning processes.

However, in order to gain a thorough knowledge, it is necessary to research quality from the standpoint of people’s comprehension. Thus, study into how teachers perceive the quality of secondary school education is required to capture their understanding and recommendations for change (Shahzad, 2007; Gvaramadze, 2008).

Teachers were chosen for this inquiry because they are the primary curriculum implementers and must address the majority of the facts and issues outlined above. They face a variety of realities in schools when teaching, which might lead to criticism.

Secondary school teaching, for example, has been criticised for failing to prepare competent students (Bedi and Sharma, 2006; Davidson, 2006). Secondary school pupils are said to graduate as unprepared persons who lack abilities in job and life (Benson, 2005) and hence constitute a burden on their communities (Shahzad, 2007).

Secondary school teaching and learning are also said to provide only transient knowledge and abilities that are only useful for responding exams (Malekela, 2000; Wedgwood, 2006).

Furthermore, teachers are accused of paying less attention in their classrooms to conceptual rather than procedural knowledge, which leads to memorisation of facts rather than concept meaning creation (Wedgewood, 2007).

As a result, students in secondary schools study surface knowledge while neglecting the vital professional and life skills (Sumra and Rajani 2006). The poor examination results of Nigerian secondary school students reflect this superficial and fleeting understanding.

The qualitative study also highlights three other classroom practices: individualisation, collaboration, and honest evaluation. Individualisation means that teachers instruct each student based on their prior knowledge and experience. Collaborative learning is when teachers allow students to work together in groups.

Finally, real assessment occurs as a result of learning activities. This can be accomplished, for example, by continuing individual and group projects rather than one-time events (Golub, 1988; Graves & Sunstein, 1992; McLaughlin & Talbert, 1993).

According to the qualitative research, this set of classroom practices has the potential to improve the academic performance of all students, independent of background. The emphasis on higher-order thinking skills is useful not only for advanced students, but also for those who require more basic skills. Understanding the conceptual underpinning of these talents is beneficial.

Individualisation of instruction does not only imply utilising unique strategies for low-performing students; techniques created to address the difficulties of low-performing students can frequently benefit high-performing students as well.

Regardless of the level of preparation students bring to the classroom, the qualitative research indicates that instructor decisions concerning classroom procedures can either considerably enhance or impede student learning.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Education is intended to develop graduates capable of thriving in a rapidly changing environment, confronting difficulties and solving issues, being entrepreneurial and creating jobs, and being critical and engaged citizens.

The quality of secondary education in Nigeria is improving; important achievements in the education sector include increased enrolment of both girls and boys at all levels of education, as well as increased teacher and educational institution numbers.

However, there are still numerous issues affecting Nigerian secondary education. For example, in Nigerian secondary schools, the curriculum is overloaded, textbooks and other teaching and learning materials are in short supply, teachers’ qualifications and teaching abilities are low, teachers’ utilisation rates are low, physical facilities are poor, students spend fewer hours on task, and the community secondary education sub-sector is underfunded in comparison to others.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The overall goal of this research is to look into the impact of student assessment on educational quality at Iganmode Grammar School in Ota, Ogun State. The precise objectives are as follows:

1. To determine the prevalence of student assessment in Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, Ogun State.

2. To assess the attitude of pupils at Iganmode Grammar School Ota towards class assessment.

3. To investigate the impact of student assessment on academic performance.

4. Investigate the quality education indicators at Iganmode Grammar School in Ota.

5. Determine how Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, has worked to improve educational quality.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS.

The pertinent research questions for this project include the following:

1. Is student assessment prevalent in Iganmode Grammar School in Ota, Ogun State?

2. What is the attitude of pupils at Iganmode Grammar School Ota towards class assessments?

3. What is the impact of student assessment on academic performance?

INVESTIGATION INTO EFFECT OF EARLY MARRIAGE AND PREGNANCY ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF FEMALE STUDENTS IN NIGERIA

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Pregnancy can be a life-changing experience for anyone, regardless of colour, educational attainment, or socioeconomic situation (Kost et al., 2010). Motherhood creates obligations on one’s life that did not exist before to the woman’s birth.

When a girl who should be in school becomes pregnant, her entire life might be turned upside down, with her ambitions and dreams dashed. Teenage parents are parents aged 13 to 19 (Kost et al., 2010).

Maynard (1997) believes that early pregnancy is a delinquent behaviour caused by stress, dislike, malice, boredom, and dissatisfaction in a teenage girl’s home setting. Other risk factors include alcoholism, drug addiction, sexual promiscuity, social and health issues among adolescents, and sexual abuse that leads to unwanted sex and pregnancy (Gaby, 2012).

Dilworth (2002) found a link between risk behaviours (drinking, smoking, and drug use) and the likelihood of falling pregnant among teenagers, whereas Singh and Daroch (2000) identified poverty as both a cause and an outcome of teen pregnancy and childbearing.

Early marriage before the age of 18 violates a number of international human rights charters and conventions, including the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the 1979 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEFADW), the 1989 African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the 1990 African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of Women. However, many young girls in developing nations see marriage as a way to secure and preserve their future.

Girls are coerced into marriage by their families while still children, in the assumption that it will benefit them financially and socially. On the contrary, early marriage undermines children’s rights, generally with more harmful implications for girls than boys. This jeopardises their total development, leaving them socially isolated with limited or no education, skills, or chances for job and self-realization.

These situations eventually increase married females’ vulnerability to poverty. Young married females are a special group that faces significant challenges on multiple fronts. They are expected to perform a disproportionate number of domestic tasks, including new roles and obligations as spouses and mothers.

The young bride’s status in the family is frequently dependent on her demonstrating her fertility, which typically occurs within the first year of her marriage when she is not physically, psychologically, or emotionally prepared.

Girls are also expected to care for and protect future generations while still children. Young moms who lack decision-making power, mobility, and economic resources are more likely to pass on their vulnerability to their children.

As a result, early marriage exacerbates the ‘feminisation of poverty’ as well as intergenerational poverty. Several research reveal significant age differences between younger married ladies and their partners.

This age discrepancy plainly generates an unequal power dynamic between the younger bride and her older and more experienced husband, with the husband wielding complete authority over sexual encounters and decision-making.

Younger wives are socially conditioned not to question their husbands’ authority, therefore they are frequently unable to utilise contraception or plan their families.

The combination of these characteristics may make younger brides more tolerant to relationship abuse. While there is common agreement that early marriage, early pregnancy, and motherhood have a negative impact on girls’ overall development and schooling, the links to poverty and the wide-ranging ramifications for families and communities have not been thoroughly studied.

This is due in part to the ‘invisibility’ of younger married girls in most cultures, as well as the fact that marriage confers adulthood on both girls and boys (Bruce, 2002). However, many communities, particularly in Africa and South Asia, continue to believe that females should marry at or shortly after puberty.

Their spouses are often a few years older than them, but might be more than twice their age. Parents and heads of families make marital decisions for their daughters and sons with little consideration for the human consequences. Instead, many see marriage as a family-building strategy, an economic arrangement, or a means of protecting girls from unwanted sexual approaches.

Statement of the General Problem

Despite national laws and international agreements prohibiting early marriage, it remains common in many poor nations, with a high frequency in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Nigeria. This research will analyse that issue by focussing on this region of Africa (Nigeria) and using Uzo-uwani as a paradigm.

According to UNICEF, early marriage has a number of detrimental repercussions for young girls and the culture in which they reside. It violates human rights in general, and the rights of girls in particular.

Early marriage has serious physical, intellectual, psychological, and emotional consequences for both girls and boys, limiting educational and employment options as well as personal growth.

This research focusses on females because this is an issue that affects them in significantly greater numbers, with more intensity and effects. Aside from the detrimental impact on girls themselves, early marriage has negative consequences for their children, families, and society as a whole.

According to UNICEF (2000), the cost of early marriage is borne by society as a whole, not just girls. Population pressure, health-care costs, and missed opportunities for human development are just a few of the mounting consequences that society bears as a result of adolescent pregnancies. Early marriage also affects global efforts to combat poverty in poor countries.

According to Bunch (2005), the widespread practice of child marriage makes it increasingly difficult for families in the developing world to escape poverty, undermining critical international efforts to combat poverty, HIV/AIDS, and other development challenges, as well as rendering billions of dollars in development assistance ineffective.

Vesico-Virginal Fistulae (VVF) is one of the difficulties associated with early marriage in Nigeria, and it remains a severe reproductive health issue for women of childbearing age in underdeveloped countries. It is one of the most enticing tragedies that a lady might experience as a result of premature pregnancy and childbirth.

Early marriage also contributes to high maternal mortality and morbidity. According to the World Health Organisation, women aged 15 to 19 had a twice as high risk of death from pregnancy than those aged 20 to 24.

The maternal mortality rate for girls aged 10 to 14 is up to five times greater than for women over the age of twenty. This study should thus strive to address the following concerns about the developmental consequences of early marriage in Nigeria.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The primary goal of the project is to investigate the impact of early marriage and childbearing on female academic achievement in Nigeria. Other specific objectives of the study include:

To discover the causes of early marriage perpetuation and pregnancy in Nigeria.

Identify how it affects girls’ well-being and personality, as well as how it violates their human rights in Nigeria.

To look into the effects and developmental implications of early marriage and pregnancies in Nigeria.

To suggest approaches to mitigate the developmental consequences of early marriage and pregnancy.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

What are the reasons for early marriage and pregnancies among female students in Nigeria?

Do early marriage and childbearing influence female students’ academic achievement in Nigeria?

How does it effect girls’ well-being and personality, and does it violate their human rights in Nigeria?

What are the effects and developmental implications of early marriage and pregnancy among female students in Nigeria?

What are some strategies for mitigating the developmental consequences of early marriage and pregnancy among Nigerian female students?

Research Hypothesis

H0: Early marriage and pregnancy do not affect female students’ academic performance in Nigeria.

H1: Early marriage and childbearing affect the academic performance of female students in Nigeria.

Significance of the Study

The study would be extremely beneficial to the advancement of girls’ education in Nigeria since it would expose the impact of early marriages and pregnancies on girls’ academic progress. The study would also be useful for students, researchers, and academics who want to conduct additional research on the topic.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is on the impact of early marriage and pregnancy on academic performance of female students in Nigeria, with the federal college of education Okene in Kogi state serving as a case study.

Limitations of the study

Financial constraints: Insufficient funds tend to restrict the researcher’s efficiency in accessing important resources, literature, or information, as well as in the process of data collecting (internet, questionnaire, and interview).

Time constraint: The researcher will conduct this investigation alongside other academic activities. This will reduce the amount of time spent on research.

INVESTIGATION ON PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AND ON CHILD ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The level of parental participation has a significant impact on children’s academic success. According to social cognitive theory, youth absorb messages about appropriate behaviour and socially acceptable goals through observation and conversation with important people in their lives (Bandura, 1977).

According to this assumption, parents have the ability to model positive attitudes and behaviours towards school, and research in developed countries such as the United States has shown that parental involvement contributes to youth academic success (Fan & Chen, 2001; Houtenville & Conway, 2008; Jeynes, 2003, 2007).

In reality, children are more likely to apply themselves and perform better in school when their parents are interested in their schoolwork, eager to help them with homework, and willing to hold their children accountable for completing school tasks.

When parents actively demonstrate their value for school through involvement, children who are not working hard in school may begin to see it as valuable.

There is little research on the overall impact of parental participation on young people’s academic success in poor countries. It is critical to examine whether the relationship exists and which types of parental participation have an impact in Nigeria, where parents frequently lack the education to engage their children in schooling or the finances to employ tutors. Is it important for parents to attend parent-teacher association meetings, volunteer at school, and discuss the significance of education with their children? This study will help to answer these concerns and add to the literature on the association between parental participation and academic performance in Nigeria.

Parental involvement in students’ academic success has piqued the interest of many educators and scholars in education around the world. Epstein, Bakker, Davis, Henderson, Lewis, and Keith are just a few of the many scholars who have studied parental participation.

For example, Epstein (2002) stated that no school development can be achieved without parental involvement, which strengthens connections between parents, teachers, administrators, and students, resulting in benefits for children, improved schools, assistance for instructors, and stronger families.

Parental involvement has historically emerged as a compensation program in the United States (USA) and Europe since the 1960s and 1970s, among other programs aimed at encouraging minority low-income parents to prepare their two children for more successful schools and preventing education delays for at-risk children (Bakker, Denessen, & Brus-Laeven 2007).

It was just a call to parents to intervene in support of lower-school students’ achievement. As a result, it is ideal for educators to ensure that all problems assumed to impede parental participation are addressed, particularly in secondary schools where pupils’ academic performance is occasionally dropping.

Furthermore, the Salamanca Conference on Special Education, held in Spain in 1994, emphasised the importance of encouraging parents to participate in educational activities at home and at school in order to supervise and assist their children’s development.

Similarly, the government should encourage family involvement by issuing policy declarations that enable the formation of parent-school associations with the goal of improving their children’s education.

The argument draws substantial support for how parents play an important role in their children’s education by seeking legislative (blueprint) changes that will address limits that limit parents’ ability to oversee their children’s education in secondary schools. This would support efforts to provide quality education for all (EFA) (UNESCO, 2003).

All measures of parental engagement employed in studies in developing countries are based on scales created in developed nations; nevertheless, parental involvement may differ between developed and developing countries. These distinctions, including the types and levels of involvement, must be considered when assessing parental involvement in developing nations.

As a result, this article examines the construct validity of parental participation in a sample of Nigerian kids and their parents. Research on parental participation and academic success in the United States reveals that parental involvement can take many different forms. At the very least, parental participation appears to vary depending on the setting (e.g., at home vs. at school) (Giallo, Treyvaud, Matthews, & Kienhuis, 2010; Jeynes, 2003).

Research also shows that parental involvement at home and at school is favourably related to a variety of academic results (Jeynes, 2003, 2007). However, research on parental involvement in school is less consistent than research on involvement at home, particularly among different racial and ethnic groups (Fan, 2001; Sui-Chu & Willms, 1996).

In addition to directly influencing educational results, parental participation may also act as a mediator between socioeconomic status (SES) and academic achievement (Altschul, 2012; Lareau, 2011). While these linkages have been established in the United States and other affluent countries, the paths may alter in underdeveloped countries.

To investigate the correlations in Ghana, we will utilise a validated measurement of a parental engagement scale. This study contributes to the literature by testing an adaption of a parental participation measure that takes into account the disparities in parental involvement between developed and developing countries. It also looks into the link between at-home and in-school parental involvement and academic performance.

Parental engagement is characterised in numerous ways in the literature. Epstein (1990, 1995) classified parental engagement into six categories: fundamental parenting, encouraging learning at home, communicating with the school, volunteering at the school, engaging in school decision making, and working with the community.

Other studies adopt a typology of parental participation based on intuitive appeal or data factor analysis (Izzo, Weissberg, Kasprow, & Fendrich, 1999; Sui-Chu & Willms, 1996).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

All measures of parental engagement employed in studies in developing countries are based on scales created in developed nations; nevertheless, parental involvement may differ between developed and developing countries.

These distinctions, including the types and levels of involvement, must be considered when assessing parental involvement in developing nations. As a result, this article examines the construct validity of parental participation in a sample of Nigerian kids and their parents.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY

The purpose of this study is to find out the influence of parents’ participation on students’ academic achievement in Nigeria. The mentioned objectives are:

1. To determine if the parents’ degree of education has any influence on students’ academic achievement.

2. To determine whether the students’ academic performance is influenced by their parents’ income.

3. To determine if communication between teachers and parents influences children’ academic success.

4. To determine how the family environment affects pupils’ academic achievement.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Based on the research objectives, the researcher will be guided by the following questions throughout the study.

1. Does the parent’s income effect the child’s academic performance?

2. Is there a relationship between parents’ levels of education and students’ academic performance?

3. Does communication between parents and teachers have an impact on students’ academic performance?

4. Is there any major association between the family environment of students and his/her academic performance?

1.5 Significance of the Study

The study’s findings are likely to expose teachers, parents, and the government at several levels, including schools.
USE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF GEOGRAPHY IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The term geography is derived from two Greek words: ‘geo’ meaning earth and ‘grapghy’ meaning to describe. Thus, geography can also be defined as a description of the earth. Geography (from Greek, geographia, literally “earth description”) is a subject of science that studies the regions, features, inhabitants, and phenomena on Earth. Geography is unique in that it combines the social sciences (human geography) with the natural sciences (physical geography).

Geography is simply described as the science concerned with the Earth’s surface. People who study geography are known as geographers. Mountains, deserts, rivers, and oceans are among the physical aspects of the Earth that geographers study.

They are also interested in how people influence and are affected by the natural world. Geography has much to do with our daily lives. Geography is the study of place, and it aims to understand how humans influence their environment, as well as the environment’s influence on humans.

Quite simply, it is the study of our surroundings. Instructional resources are materials that help teachers make their lessons plain to students. They are also utilised to deliver information, thoughts, and notes to students (Ijaduola, 1997). Pictures, flashcards, posters, charts, tape recorders, radios, videotapes, televisions, and computers are examples of instructional resources.

These materials enhance the standard instructional processes.According to Emma and Ajayi (2004), instructional materials are those that facilitate the teaching and learning process. It promotes knowledge of the idea and generalisation by making the instruction practical and relevant.

Any teacher who has the student’s best interests at heart must consider the methods and techniques he will use to make his teaching and learning process more successful and attractive to students.

According to Bassey (2002), science requires a lot of resources, and during a recession, it may be difficult to find some of the electronic devices and equipment needed for teaching geography in senior secondary schools.

According to Adeniyi (2000), instructional materials have the impact of communicating more permanently, addressing health issues, and retaining information when reinforced with aid. Certainly, instructional resources that are carefully chosen and applied skilfully will improve learning outcomes.

As a result, it is vital to explore the role of instructional materials in biology education and learning. However, both humans and animals have the ability to learn. In other words, they are potential students.

Certain factors within and outside the learner influence how well each person learns. Instructional materials can take several forms, including textual and non-textual, visual and aural, and audio-visual.

Witwoth and Benson (2003) state that there is a need for research on the use and usefulness of visual instructional resources in biology classrooms to improve teaching. With these concerns in mind, as well as educational growth, the current study is being conducted to address issues related to the effect of instructional materials in geography teaching and learning in Senior Secondary schools.

Schools should provide adequate educational materials to allow teachers to clarify their lessons. Adequate infrastructure and a conducive environment for successful geography teaching and learning, as well as retention of knowledge. Schools should send geography instructors to seminars and workshops to keep their knowledge up to date.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The influence of using instructional resources in geography teaching and learning has been extensively explored, yet many questions remain unsolved. The necessity for researching locally available materials as a replacement for the grossly unavailable materials in our schools, resourcefulness of the teacher must be in accordance with the learners’ curriculum and surroundings so that classroom teaching does not have to be impeded by lack of cash.

As a result, the government must work to promote local technology in all of its forms, because geography is interested in offering holistic solutions to man’s issues. Many geography writers have highlighted the gross unavailability of instructional materials, as well as teachers’ attitudes towards their use in classroom teaching-learning circumstances.

Instructional materials are unavailable in our classrooms, and teachers are unwilling to improvise or use them. Thus, this study attempted to identify several secondary schools that required instructional resources in teaching geography.

Identify instructional materials required for effective teaching and learning of geography in senior secondary school. Identify instructional resources accessible in senior secondary schools and determine the usefulness of instructional materials such as chalkboards, funnel boards, model real items, overhead projectors, tape recorders, radios, televisions, etc. on student performance in senior secondary schools. Yaba LCDA.

1.3 GOALS OF THE STUDY

The primary goal of the study was to ensure the efficacy of using effective geography teaching and learning in senior secondary schools at Yaba LCDA.

Impact Of Family Background On The Occupational Aspirations Of Secondary School Students

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to look into the relationship between family background and career goals among secondary school students in Umuahia Local Government Area, Abia State. The researcher uses ten (10) secondary schools chosen at random from the Umuahia Local Government sample population.

A questionnaire was utilised to collect information from 100 respondents (students). The study questions were presented as percentages, and the hypotheses were analysed using the chi-square method. The study found no significant association between parents’ socioeconomic level and students’ vocational goals.

In addition, there is a considerable association between parental educational attainment and student profession choices. It was also observed that there is no substantial correlation between parental occupation and students’ career choices.

Finally, there is a substantial association in academic achievement between students from monogamous and polygamous families in terms of career choices.

Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: that the government provide a learning environment for the school, such as a well-structured building, ventilated classrooms, well-equipped laboratories and libraries, and so on, in order to motivate students to learn and influence their career choices. Parents should encourage their children to attend school and equip them with the required materials.

Knowledge of sexual abuse and preventive measures among adolescent in selected secondary schools.

Abstract

This study examined adolescents’ knowledge of sexual abuse and prevention methods in selected secondary schools. Four objectives were raised, including: determining the level of knowledge among adolescents regarding sexual abuse, including their understanding of what constitutes sexual abuse, its different forms, and associated risks;

identifying socio-demographic factors influencing adolescents’ knowledge of sexual abuse, such as age, gender, socioeconomic status, and educational background; and evaluating the effectiveness of existing preventive measures implemented within secondary schools.

A total of 77 responses were collected and authenticated from enrolled participants, with all coming from chosen secondary schools in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state. The hypothesis was investigated using the Chi-Square statistical program (SPSS).

Chapter one

Introduction

Background of the study.

Sexual abuse among adolescents is a widespread problem with serious consequences for their physical and psychological health. Adolescents must have adequate understanding of sexual abuse and prevention methods in order to defend themselves and seek help when necessary.

This study investigates the present state of adolescent knowledge about sexual abuse and the efficacy of prevention strategies in selected secondary schools.

According to research, many adolescents lack full understanding of sexual abuse, including its many forms and related hazards. Smith et al. (2020) discovered that only a small percentage of adolescents assessed had a good comprehension of sexual abuse dynamics and its effects.

Furthermore, Jones and colleagues (2019) identified gaps in teenagers’ understanding of what constitutes sexual assault and how to recognise abusive behaviours.

Several variables lead to inequalities in adolescents’ understanding of sexual abuse. Age, gender, and socioeconomic position all play important roles (Brown et al., 2018).

Adolescents from marginalised groups or with poor educational opportunities may be more exposed to a lack of understanding regarding sexual abuse.

Furthermore, the importance of parents, schools, and the media in educating adolescents against sexual assault cannot be overemphasised. According to Johnson et al. (2017), comprehensive sexual education programs in schools and open communication lines between parents and teenagers are essential.

Effective preventative strategies are critical to reducing the incidence of sexual abuse among adolescents. School-based interventions, such as sexual education programs and seminars on assertiveness and boundary establishing, have shown potential in providing adolescents with the knowledge and skills they need to defend themselves (Garcia et al., 2016).

Furthermore, community-based measures, such as awareness campaigns and access to support services, help to promote a comprehensive approach to prevention (Martinez et al. 2015).

The knowledge gap about sexual assault among teenagers is critical for ensuring their safety and well-being. Educators, legislators, and healthcare experts can collaborate to make secondary school environments safer for teenagers by identifying the factors that influence knowledge levels and implementing evidence-based preventive actions.

Statement of the Problem

Sexual abuse among adolescents in secondary schools is a widespread and serious problem with far-reaching implications. Despite efforts to address the issue, there is still a lack of information about adolescents’ knowledge of sexual abuse and access to preventive measures in the school setting. Thus, this study tries to investigate the following critical issues:

Adolescents’ awareness of sexual abuse in selected secondary schools, including their comprehension of what constitutes sexual abuse, its many forms, and the risks involved.

Factors impacting teenagers’ understanding of sexual abuse include age, gender, social situation, and educational background.
The effectiveness of present preventive strategies in secondary schools in dealing with adolescent sexual abuse.

The role of parents, schools, and the media in educating adolescents about sexual abuse and supporting prevention strategies.
Identifying gaps and making recommendations for enhancing understanding and preventive strategies to better protect adolescents from sexual abuse in secondary school settings.

The objectives of the study

The primary goal of this study is to analyse adolescents’ knowledge of sexual abuse and prevention methods at selected secondary schools. Specifically, the study seeks to:

Determine teenagers’ grasp of what constitutes sexual abuse, its many forms, and associated hazards.

Determine the socio-demographic characteristics impacting teenagers’ knowledge of sexual abuse, such as age, gender, social level, and educational background.

Evaluate the efficacy of existing preventive interventions in secondary schools for tackling teenage sexual abuse.

Examine how parents, schools, and the media may help adolescents learn about sexual abuse and promote prevention measures.

Research Hypotheses

The following research hypotheses are formed.

H1: teenagers have no comprehension of sexual abuse, its various forms, and associated risks.

H2: current preventive measures provided inside secondary schools do not effectively address sexual abuse among teenagers.

Significance of the Study

This study has important implications for many stakeholders, including policymakers, educators, healthcare professionals, parents, and adolescents themselves. The following points emphasise the importance of this research:

This study, which assesses teenagers’ awareness of sexual abuse and preventive measures, might provide significant insights to policymakers and stakeholders involved in establishing and implementing policies and initiatives to address sexual abuse in secondary schools. The study’s evidence-based recommendations can help to build more targeted and successful sexual abuse prevention initiatives for teenagers.

Understanding teenagers’ understanding of sexual abuse and availability to prevention measures might help them recognise and respond to incidents of abuse.

By identifying knowledge gaps and delivering sexual abuse education, teenagers can be better equipped to defend themselves and seek help when necessary, increasing their safety and well-being.

The outcomes of this study can help to improve school-based programs and activities focused at avoiding sexual abuse among teenagers. Insights on the effectiveness of current preventive measures can help educators and school administrators plan and execute evidence-based interventions that are tailored to the requirements of teenagers.

The responsibility of parents in educating adolescents about sexual assault is critical. This study highlights the necessity of parental engagement in discussing difficult matters about sexual assault and encouraging open communication within families. Recommendations from the study can help parents create a supportive and knowledgeable environment for their children.

Finally, the value of this study rests in its potential to help promote adolescent well-being and avoid sexual abuse. The study’s goal is to make secondary school environments safer for teenagers by increasing awareness, knowledge, and access to preventive measures, thereby protecting their physical and psychological health.

Scope of the Study

The study’s scope includes knowledge of sexual abuse and prevention strategies among adolescents in selected secondary schools. The study will be limited to chosen secondary schools in Uyo.

Limitations of the study

Despite its importance and possible contributions, this study has limitations. It is critical to recognise these limitations in order to present a clear picture of the breadth and applicability of the research findings. Here are some of the limitations:

Sample Size and Selection Bias: The size and representativeness of the sample population may influence the study’s results. The selection of secondary schools and participants may not accurately reflect the diversity of adolescents’ experiences and attitudes on sexual abuse and prevention strategies. Furthermore, voluntary engagement may generate bias since persons who choose to participate may differ from those who do not.

Self-reported data: The use of self-reported data to assess adolescents’ knowledge of sexual abuse and preventive actions may introduce biases such as social desirability or recall bias. Adolescents may underreport or over-report their knowledge and experiences due to social norms or memory constraints, resulting in inaccurate conclusions.

The study’s cross-sectional design restricts its capacity to establish causal correlations between variables. While the study can shed light on the links between knowledge of sexual abuse and preventive measures, it cannot determine causality or track changes over time.

Social Desirability Bias: Adolescents may give comments that they believe are socially desirable rather than reflecting their actual knowledge or experiences. This bias can have an impact on the veracity of collected data, especially when dealing with sensitive matters like sexual assault.

Definition of Terms

Sexual Abuse: Sexual abuse is defined as any unwanted sexual activity performed on an individual without their consent. This can encompass a wide range of behaviours, including molestation, rape, sexual assault, harassment, exploitation, and coercion. Sexual abuse can occur in a variety of circumstances, including familial ties, personal partnerships, institutions, and strangers.

Adolescents are those who are between the ages of 10 and 19. This period is marked by profound physical, emotional, cognitive, and social changes as people navigate identity creation, peer relationships, and growing independence.

Knowledge is the awareness or understanding that individuals have about a specific subject or issue. In the context of this study, knowledge of sexual abuse includes an understanding of what constitutes sexual abuse, its many forms, related hazards, and preventative measures.

Preventive measures are methods, interventions, or activities taken to lessen the likelihood of sexual abuse and protect individuals from damage. These measures may include educational programs, awareness campaigns, policy interventions, support services, and community efforts focused at promoting safety, empowerment, and preventing sexual abuse.

Secondary schools, also known as high schools or junior high schools in some areas, are educational institutions that offer formal education to teenagers aged 12 to 18 years old.

Secondary education follows basic education and comes before tertiary or higher education, and it is critical in preparing students for future academic pursuits or employment.

EFFECT OF WORKING CLASS MOTHERS ON THEIR CHILDREN ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT

The goal of this study was to look into the effects of working-class moms on their children’s academic achievement in Odeda Local Government Area in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Five secondary schools were selected from among the many secondary schools in Odeda Local Government. A questionnaire was utilised to collect data, which were then analysed using percentages.

The findings show that children whose moms combine the roles of working class and motherhood fare significantly better in school than children of complete working class mothers who spend the majority of their time outside the home.

The researcher also made some useful suggestions and recommendations that I sincerely believe would help to minimise the rate of poor performance of children in Odeda Local Government Area of Abeokuta in particular and Nigeria in general

if they are strictly adhered to. Some of these recommendations are; working-class mothers should have time to supervise their children’s academic work in school, and teachers, on the other hand, should learn how to call the attention

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The home is the house, flat, or location where a child or children reside with their parents. Women’s essential societal tasks are to bear and raise children who will contribute to the household and society as a whole.

Mothers are traditionally expected to participate or involve in social activities or jobs that may need her absence from the home environment; this is evident in women who have been working or engaged in a variety of activities such as labour, manual

white collar, and civil service jobs. Many parents have hopes of a successful life for their children, which motivates them to do well.

However, the relative success of working-class moms has been linked to family culture, which in turn raises questions about women’ experiences in the modern family.
