AN ASSESSMENT OF PERCEIVED EFFECT OF POPULATION EXPLOSION ON THE STUDENTS OF PHYSICAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION IN THE TEACHING OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS (A CASE STUDY OF FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Since Western education got firmly ingrained in Nigeria, it has encountered myriads of issues. Most of these challenges are hardly lost on the\svarious governments, whether during colonial or post-independence era. It has resulted in the setting up of numerous commissions such as\sAshby Commission of 1960 and the Curriculum Conference of 1969 to evaluate Nigeria’s educational problems and give recommendations.

These difficulties pertained to the amount and quality of instructors, educational facilities, curriculum planning and development (Adesina,\s1990).
Most countries today accept in principle that the provision of education is a core human right as reflected in article 26 of the\sDeclaration of Human Rights (Osim, Chike and Isaac, 2012). (Osim, Chike and Isaac, 2012).

Through education, peace, good international relations, improved chances for\seconomic developments and improvement of human resources are attainable (Omohan and Maliki, 2007). (Omohan and Maliki, 2007). Despite this understanding, most\sgovernments cannot satisfy this goal of education due to enormous population sizes, rapid growth and competition for few financial\sresources.

In recent years, there has been increase in the population of our institutions notably in terms of pupils enrollment in Edo State.
Some schools have as many as 60, 70 or more kids per class as opposed the teacher student ratio of 1:40 stipulated by the National\sPolicy on Education (FGN 2004). (FGN 2004). This has obviously affected teaching and learning badly as well as pupils academic performance.

This is demonstrated in the failure rates observed by pupils in external examinations in nearly all courses (Ajayi, 2000). (Ajayi, 2000). The scenario we have\sin several of our institutions in Edo state is that teachers find it difficult traveling round the classroom because of the big class size.

In view of the\sdivergent perspectives voiced by different researchers on this problem, there is need to adopt a new perspective. The goal of the present\sstudy therefore is to find out from secondary school instructors how classroom population impacts their ability to manage teaching or teach\seffectively.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The number of students enrolled in U.S. colleges of education has grown steadily throughout time. With no increase in facilities, teachers or infrastructure to support this rise, this has continued to occur.

Since educational quality and output have been declining, it is imperative to investigate whether the increase in student population directly affects academic performance and identify the causes of student population growth in colleges of education in Zaria educational zone, as well as what can be done to remedy the situation.

FORMAT OF THE RESEARCH

The study’s primary goal is to examine the impact of population growth on the teaching of physical and health education and sports to students. The study’s other aims include:

To find out what’s causing the recent surge in enrollment at educational institutions.

Study the impact of rising populations on the delivery and learning of physical education and sports in educational institutions.

An investigation of the correlation between population growth and the academic performance of physical education and sports among students will be conducted

To propose solutions to Nigerian institutions of education’s management population explosion.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RESEARCH

Because of this project’s significance, it will shed light on how the rapid growth of the population has affected students’ academic performance. There are additional elements that effect student performance as a result of population growth, as well.

In addition, this study will help school administrators and teachers devise strategies to mitigate the negative effects of population growth on student academic performance. In addition, curricula as well as school structures are closely monitored by educationists in order to aid pupils in their learning.

Even more so, serving as a research study into how the rapid growth in the human population affects students’ academic performance.

Finally, it will function as a resource for people in quest of such information by providing access to important information and data.

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT

The study focuses on the impact of population growth on the students of physical and health education at the College of Education Zaria, Kaduna state.

Insufficient scope of the study.

Insufficient funds can hinder a researcher’s ability to get important materials, literature, or information, as well as in the collecting of data (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Due to the researcher’s busy schedule, this study will have to wait while he or she works on other projects. This means that the amount of time spent on research will be reduced as a result.
