CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

Academic libraries are those that are housed in institutions of higher learning. Academic libraries, according to Uwaifo (2010), are those established and maintained by higher/tertiary institutions of learning such as universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, schools of nursing, schools of health technologies, petroleum training institutes, and so on.

According to Aina (2004), academic institutions are divided into two types: university and non-university institutions such as colleges of education, polytechnics, nursing schools, and others other than secondary schools.

Libraries in these institutions serve missions that are directly related to the mission of the institution. According to Dara (2005), the libraries of these institutions are established to be the source of the procurement and supply of textbooks, journals, and adequate current valuable information to promote academic excellence.

An academic library’s primary function is to support the institution’s teaching, learning, and research programs by acquiring adequate print and non-print information resources and audio-visual materials and making them available for use by students, faculty members, and researchers in general.

These libraries are established in their respective institutions to support all academic work and to achieve the goals of academic libraries, which are to provide adequate information resources for teaching, learning, and research to all users.

This is consistent with Omeje (2005), who stated that academic libraries around the world vary in size and sophistication, but they all share one goal: to provide information resources to support the parent institution’s teaching, learning, research, and community service initiatives.

According to Boakye (1994), academic libraries are charged with the responsibility of providing adequate information materials to meet the needs of well-defined specialized users, who are lecturers, researchers, administrators, or students at a specific academic institution.

These materials should be diverse enough to meet the needs of lecturers and students, as well as library users in general, for teaching, research and development, publication, and community services.
