CHAPTER ONE

1.1 THE STUDY'S BACKGROUND

A career is a series of jobs that a person has in a specific field of work, with increasing responsibility as time passes.

Choice The of choosing between two or more possibilities, according to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary; something that you can choose, the right to choose, or the possibility of choosing.

The main reasons why people, especially young people, have to choose a career are propelled by intrinsic and extrinsic factors to the individual making the decision.

According to Bandura et al. (2001), the factors influencing the process of career development include personal aptitudes and educational attainment. The philosophy of education in developed countries and other parts of the world is based, among other things, on the development of the individual into a sound and effective citizen fully integrated into the community (NPE, 2004).

Various nations have pursued and implemented new changes in their education sector in order to meet their societal needs, most notably the need to prepare individuals for work and to make them economically and self-sufficient. Education is regarded as a “meal ticket” and “lunch pad” into the works. Education serves an important purpose in preparing students for their future careers.

Most adolescents and youths find it difficult to choose a career that will meet their personal, economic, and intellectual goals because they lack the knowledge to explore different career options and possibilities, as well as the knowledge of pre-requisites for such careers. WATTLES (2009) One must not only conduct thorough career research before making a career decision in order to adapt to changing socioeconomic conditions.

The majority of secondary school students lack accurate information about occupational opportunities to assist them in making appropriate career choices. Multiple factors influence career choice, including personality, globalization, socialization, model, social support, and available resources such as information and financial resources (KERKA 2000).

In a longitudinal study, the total number of science and math courses taken in secondary school are related to the choice of science and math majors when entering college, NAUTA AND PERSON (2003).

Parents, socioeconomic status, level of education, family size, and temperament are all associated with career interest and decision-making at home. According to GESHINDE (2001), sex role, age, religion, and family are all factors influencing career choice. Furthermore, through interaction within the family, the home provides the necessary needs in choosing a career.

The factors influencing the career choice of students who graduated from an urban area and may or may not choose an agricultural education program.

Secondary Education Educational and work experiences influence the choices of students who do not pursue a career in agriculture. This could be due to a lack of interest in the field, for example (ESTERS AND BOWEN 2005).

We also have gender differences in career development, with children aged 13-14 developing two cognitive competencies related to career development: self-concept and perceptions of occupations.

Female students may not choose occupations that are traditionally associated with men (e.g., a career as a miner), and they may consider eliminating options that are perceived as having a high social status (e.g career as a housemaid)

In terms of gender differences in career development aspects, studies have shown that females have different career patterns than males (KRAKAUER & CHEU, 2003), and females have higher career commitment scores than men. Individuals must consider very serious factors and choose careers that will satisfy their personal, economic, and intellectual goals in order to be satisfied with lifelong vocations.

1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM

Many factors influence secondary school students' career choices. Most of their choices and decisions are consistent, and most students require guidance from either a school counselor or a parent before deciding on a career. As a result, the purpose of this study is to look into the factors that influence students' career choices in secondary school before they go on to higher education.

1.3 JUSTIFICATION FOR STUDY

The study's justification is to examine the relationship between learning experience, gender, career self efficacy, outcome, expectation, vocational interest, and career aspiration using the social cognitive career theory.

1.4 THE STUDY'S OBJECTIVES

To identify the factors influencing secondary school students' career choices. To determine the level of influence of various factors on career choice. To investigate students' career, subject, and course choices in school. The purpose of this research is to identify the factors that influence secondary school students' career choices in Yewa South Local Government.

1.5 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY/DELIMINATION

This research is only for secondary school students in Yewa South Local Government.

1.6 RESEARCH LIMITATIONS

The researcher will face issues such as finances, transportation, and communication barriers.
