AN ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECT OF THE MEDIA ON PERFORMANCE OF ISLAMIC STUDIES STUDENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

Understanding today’s digital children and how they learn has far-reaching implications not only for how teachers teach digital students, but also, and perhaps more importantly, for how their teachers reach them. Today’s youth are far more reliant on media than previous generations.

These students will need to be able to adapt to change and accept new ideas, and their ability to use media resources will be inextricably linked to their analytical abilities. Many people believe that today’s youth’s brains have been rewired to accommodate the thousands of hours they spend in front of computer screens watching and creating video, listening to music, and playing computer games.

This demonstrates the significance of media resources in the teaching and learning process. In other words, the primary goal of this research is to determine the impact of media resources on the performance of Islamic studies students in secondary schools.

With one hundred students and five teachers from those secondary schools, the field of study was able to cover a total of five secondary schools in Mainland Local Government. The questionnaires were scrutinized and made public. As a result, the study revealed that if the tools (media resources) are used correctly and wisely, they can produce incredible results. Finally, recommendations were clearly stated.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Study’s Background

Islam, as a religion, places a high value on education and knowledge. When the Qur’an was first revealed, the first instruction was “Iqra,” which simply means “Read.” (Verse 1 of Qur’an 96)

This demonstrates the significance of education in Islam. It is both the starting point and the path toward human development.

Education can be viewed as a light that points humanity in the right direction. If the teaching process fails to impact students’ knowledge, the teachers at the center of the entire teaching and learning activities must have failed to employ the appropriate technique and resources to drive home the objectives. Teachers are expected to turn teaching and learning into sports in order to pique students’ interest and motivate them.

Education should become a game and a drill for them, rather than a burden and a source of boredom (Damodharan and Rangarajan, 2007).

Educational media should be used in the teaching and learning process to achieve the best possible delivery of objectives. Educational technology and multimedia can be valuable tools when they are appropriately integrated into the curriculum to achieve learning gains, especially when combined with a twenty-first-century curriculum.

Modern teaching methods place greater emphasis on the use of instructional materials by teachers, who are supposed to assist students in understanding certain concepts. One of the primary goals of the teacher education program is to produce competent professionals capable of making learning more enjoyable for students.

The ability of a teacher to create and use equipment and materials for teaching and learning is greatly influenced by his or her interaction with and continuous use of educational media.

It is widely assumed that the use of media in education contributes to more constructivist learning, as well as an increase in activity and responsibility among students. This restricts teachers’ roles to supporting, advising, and coaching students rather than simply transmitting knowledge.

There are numerous reasons why we use media in education, according to Blessing Adeoye (2011). The extensive use of technology in the classroom typically alters the roles of teachers. Some futurists have even claimed that technology, by allowing students to interact directly and individually with content, allows them to do away with the teacher entirely.

To achieve this goal, effective and innovative teaching and learning methods are required, especially in this digital age. One unintended consequence of the digital revolution has emerged. Today’s youth are far more reliant on media than previous generations.

Many people believe that today’s youth’s brains have been rewired to accommodate the thousands of hours they spend in front of computer screens watching and creating video, listening to music, and playing computer games. It has also been claimed that today’s youth communicate digitally. That is why many have dubbed this new generation the “digital generation.

Media is an interactive tool that combines a variety of elements, such as text, graphics, audio, video, and animation, to pique the interest of students (Shelly and Gunter, 2006).

In terms of Islamic studies, teachers must make some changes to how the subject is taught in order to make learning more concrete.

The use of media resources in the teaching and learning of Islamic studies as a subject in secondary school will aid in overcoming students’ negative attitudes toward learning the subject. Most topics, such as Articles of Faith, Hajj, and Prophetic Battles, are currently taught without the use of media resources such as audio tape, television, projector, slideshow, and so on. As a result, the majority of students find Islamic studies uninteresting and boring.

The use of media resources will make the subject more presentable, appealing, and interesting to the students, resulting in a more comprehensive understanding of the concept being impacted on them. The study will thus assess the role that media resources play in the teaching and learning of Islamic studies in secondary schools.

1.2 Formulation of the Problem

Teachers of Islamic studies in our secondary schools fail to recognize that the subject has some specific methods and techniques for making students understand it very well through the use of media. A teacher, no matter how competent he is, can never do the necessary work of responding in order for the learner to respond positively to the learning experience.

Although the use of media in the educational system appears to have improved teaching and learning, the problem with using media resources in teaching and learning Islamic studies is a lack of teachers’ proficiency in the use of media resources. However, this has resulted in a significant gap between the use of educational media and the concept to be taught in Islamic studies.

1.3 The Study’s Purpose

This research project’s goal is to:

I Examine the impact of media resources on the academic performance of secondary school Islamic studies students.

(ii) Determine the importance of media resources in the teaching and learning of Islamic studies.

(iii) Evaluate the availability of media resources in schools for teaching and learning Islamic studies.

(iv) Consider the impact of a teacher’s inability to use media resources as an instructional delivery method.

1.4 Question for Research

(1) What effect do media resources have on the academic performance of Islamic studies students in secondary schools?

(2) How can media resources be used to improve Islamic studies teaching and learning?

(3) What media resources are available in schools for the teaching and learning of Islamic studies?

(4) What effect does a teacher’s incompetence in using media resources have on instructional delivery?

1.5 Importance of the Research

(a) This study is significant because it aims to provide graduating Islamic studies students and Islamic studies teachers already working in the field with invaluable knowledge of the use of media resources in the Islamic studies teaching-learning process.

(b) The study will also enlighten educators on the importance of educational media in the implementation of Islamic studies curricula.

1.6 Study Scope and Limitations

The study concentrated solely on the impact of media resources in teaching and learning Islamic studies in secondary schools. The study is limited to secondary schools in Lagos State’s Mainland Local Government Area.

1.7 Terms and Definitions

Because they will appear in this work from time to time, the following terms will be defined for the purpose of this research project. They are as follows:

I Media: This is simply the study of the technology used to handle information and aid communication. It is a broad term that refers to all types of computing systems, telecommunications, and networks.

(ii) Islamic Slides: Islamic studies as a subject aims to influence an individual to be a responsible member of society and, above all, to be obedient to the willingness of his/her creator as a servant of Allah by imparting Islamic teachings, ethics, norms, practices, and tradition (SWT).
