A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ELECTRONIC MAILING SYSTEM
Abstract Electronic mail (e-mail) is a critical medium for Internet-based education. Because of its distinct characteristics, there is reason to be concerned that students do not take adequate care when writing messages sent via e-mail.
This has far-reaching implications for the efficacy of online learning environments. This paper describes an empirical research project that looked into how much thought students put into e-mail communication versus face-to-face communication. A survey was given to 596 undergraduates.
According to the findings of this survey, students devote significantly more thought to e-mail communication with the instructor and groups of peers than to equivalent face-to-face communication.
At the same time, students tend to give e-mail about the same amount of thought as they do verbal communication with individual peers. Finally, the study discovered some intriguing patterns relating to student gender and technological comfort as predictors of thought put into e-mail communication.
